Immigrant Women's Experiences Of Maternity-Care Services In Canada: A Systematic Review Using A Narrative Synthesis, Gina M A. Higginbottom, Myfanwy Morgan, Mirande Alexandre, Yvonne Chiu, Joan Forgeron, Deb Kocay, Rubina Barolia

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Background: Canada's diverse society and its statutory commitment to multiculturalism means that a synthesis of knowledge related to the healthcare experiences of immigrants is essential to realise the health potential for future Canadians. Although concerns about the maternity experiences of immigrants in Canada are relatively new, recent national guidelines explicitly call for the tailoring of services to user needs. We therefore assessed the experiences of immigrant women accessing maternity-care services in Canada. In particular, we investigated the experiences of immigrant women in Canada in accessing and navigating maternity and related healthcare services from conception to 6 months postpartum in Canada. …

“We Have Been Working Overnight Without Sleeping”: Traditional Birth Attendants’ Practices And Perceptions Of Post-Partum Care Services In Rural Tanzania, Gladys R. Mahiti, Angwara D. Kiwara, Columba Mbekenga, Anna-Karin Hurtig, Isabel Goicolea

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background: In many low-income countries, formal post-partum care utilization is much lower than that of skilled delivery and antenatal care. While Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) might play a role in post-partum care, research exploring their attitudes and practices during this period is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore TBAs’ practices and perceptions in post-partum care in rural Tanzania.

Methods: Qualitative in-depth interview data were collected from eight untrained and three trained TBAs. Additionally, five multiparous women who were clients of untrained TBAs were also interviewed. Interviews were conducted in February 2013. Data were digitally recorded and …

Uncovering The Concealed Part Of Motherhood-Postpartum Depression In Mothers, Hunaina Hadi, Shamsa Hadi

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Introduction: Motherhood is the most pleasing experience of a woman's life. Birth of a child gives birth to new hopes and ambitions. But Post-partum Depression is a condition when this blessing turns into curse. It can affect the mother, the partner and the child and can even lead to infanticide as well as maternal death, often by suicide.

Method: A qualitative systematic review was conducted through electronic medium to explore the relevant literature. Various databases i.e. Pubmed, Google search engines, Science Direct, JPMA, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature CINHAL and SAGA were used. Manual search was …

Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy In A Sample Of Wic Participants, Sarah Rowe Jan 2015

Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy In A Sample Of Wic Participants, Sarah Rowe

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Breastfeeding is recognized as the gold standard for infant nutrition. Women enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) give birth to over half of the infants born in the US and over 50% of manufactured formula is sold to WIC participants. The aim of this study was to determine the breastfeeding self-efficacy score and to evaluate if there was a relationship between breastfeeding self-efficacy scores and initiation and duration of breastfeeding in a sample of women enrolled in a WIC program. A total of 33 subjects were included in this study. Findings indicated women …

Virginia Commonwealth University Volunteer Doula Program Training Manual, Kathleen M. Bell, Susan L. Linder Jan 2015

Virginia Commonwealth University Volunteer Doula Program Training Manual, Kathleen M. Bell, Susan L. Linder

School of Nursing Publications

A birth doula is a specially trained birth assistant who provides emotional, psychological and physical support and care to a pregnant and/or laboring woman. In providing this care, the doula helps the laboring woman and her support person achieve their most optimal birth experience. This is typically an unmedicated birth; however, doulas may attend any birth and be of profound assistance and comfort.

This curriculum was written specifically for nursing students who are being trained as lay doulas. Unique in its approach and delivery, the curriculum is written with the nursing student in mind; particularly a student who has already …

Variables Influencing Breastfeeding Among First Time Mothers, Myra Westbrooks Jan 2015

Variables Influencing Breastfeeding Among First Time Mothers, Myra Westbrooks

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

This research examined the variables that influence breastfeeding in first time mothers. The study utilized Fishbein and Ajzen’s Theory of Reasoned Action as the theoretical framework. The sample included 147 first time mothers and utilized a descriptive design with a retrospective chart review. The descriptive study allowed for the identification of variables and patterns or characteristics of first time mothers who chose to breastfeed. Associations between several demographic variables and breastfeeding were identified in this study. By identifying variables that have a significant influence on breastfeeding, focused action plans can be developed to improve both maternal and infant health outcomes.

Effects Of Comfort Education On Maternal Comfort And Labor Pain, Abby E. Garlock Jan 2015

Effects Of Comfort Education On Maternal Comfort And Labor Pain, Abby E. Garlock

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

A lack of understanding regarding the relationship between comfort education and maternal comfort experienced during labor exists within current literature. This project examined the effects of providing education regarding comfort and comfort options available in the hospital setting on level of maternal comfort during labor. A quasi-experimental pretest/posttest comparison group design was used for this project, in which a convenience sample of 80 participants was randomly assigned into a standard care control group or an educational intervention group. Providing comfort education during admission to the labor and delivery unit did not increase comfort scores or decrease pain scores in the …

Challenges To Breastfeeding Infants With Phenylketonuria, Sandra Banta-Wright Jan 2015

Challenges To Breastfeeding Infants With Phenylketonuria, Sandra Banta-Wright

Faculty Publications - College of Nursing

Breastfeeding duration for infants with phenylketonuria (PKU) is less than other full-term infants. However, no study has examined the challenges encountered by mothers' breastfeeding infants with PKU. In 75 mothers of a child with PKU, three categories of breastfeeding challenges were identified: common breastfeeding issues, breastfeeding and PKU, and no challenges. The common breastfeeding issues can be identified in the literature but for these mothers, the issues are heightened due to frequent phenylalanine (Phe) monitoring. Even so, many mothers adapt breastfeeding to maintain desired Phe levels. A few mothers had no issues and were the exception, not the norm.

The Impact Of Prenatal Depressive Symptoms, Intimate Partner Relationship, And Immune Status On Postpartum Depression, Julia J. Hall Jan 2015

The Impact Of Prenatal Depressive Symptoms, Intimate Partner Relationship, And Immune Status On Postpartum Depression, Julia J. Hall

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

The prevalence of depression during pregnancy in the U. S. is approximately 13%. Poor quality of the intimate partner relationship is significantly correlated with depression during pregnancy. The adverse effects of antenatal depression have been widely documented. The relationship between the intimate partner relationship and depression during pregnancy has not been well delineated in the literature. Little data exist regarding the impact of prenatal immune status on risk for postpartum depression. Due to limited evidence, there is a critical need to examine the relationship among trimester specific cytokines, quality of the intimate partner relationship, and antenatal depressive symptoms on risk …
