Factors Associated With Overall Experience In Advanced-Practice Doctoral Programs, Kristi Chipman

Advanced-Practice Doctoral (APD) students are working professionals who are often returning to school after several years of practice. Multiple areas and concerns may affect overall experience as well as retention rates in doctoral programs.

This mixed-methods research study utilized both qualitative (interview) and quantitative (survey) methods. Students from three different APD programs (Doctorate in Clinical Nutrition, Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Nursing) were asked to participate in a semi-structured interview. The interview was used to help guide the development of a survey. Students from the three groups (n=65) were asked to participate in a one-time, non-incentivized, survey. The survey …

As the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education continue to promote the implementation and creation of literature on academic partnerships, a Christian university, sought to evaluate its academic partnership with a for-profit hospital for the first time in regard to student perspectives. The purpose of this mixed-methods program evaluation was to describe the student perceptions of the academic partnership in trusting, collaborating, and engaging nursing students and recruiting and retaining nursing graduates to rural hospitals and health care facilities. This project analyzed the effects of guided meditations and a stress management class on undergraduate, prelicensure nursing students’ perceived stress levels. College students and professional nurses are both susceptible to having high stress levels. Mindfulness activities have been shown to lower stress levels. Undergraduate, prelicensure nursing students participated in this project determining the effects of guided meditations and a stress management class on perceived stress levels in a quantitative, pre- and postinterventional study. This study evaluated the effect of high-fidelity simulation with both mannequins and live actors on flexible and reflective thinking of nursing students. Students enrolled in an undergraduate nursing program were recruited to participate in this study. Ninety students, all female, completed both pre- and post-surveys. The researchers conducted a paired samples t-test to determine if there is a statistically significant difference in students’ level of flexible thinking before and after they experienced the high-fidelity simulation. Moreover, we conducted multivariate correlational analysis to examine the relationships between flexible thinking and reflective thinking. In general, statistical results in this study provide …

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (2019) reported in 2018-2019, U.S. nursing schools turned away more than 75,000 qualified applicants from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs due to insufficient numbers of faculty and clinical sites. Two-thirds of the nursing schools related a shortage of nursing faculty and/or clinical preceptors as a reason for not admitting qualified applicants (AACN, 2019).

Background: Ineffective communication in healthcare has been tied to medical errors and provider stress (Chaharsoughi et al., 2014). Many nursing students struggle when communicating in the clinical setting because they lack confidence. When left unaddressed, this issue can follow students as they begin their nursing careers. Aim: The aim of the study is to report an analysis of the concept of approachability of the instructor within the context of nursing clinical education.

Background: Approachability of the instructor within the context of a nursing clinical education is a concept that is obscure and immature.

Data Sources: A literature search between the years 1985 to present yielded 18 articles that were analyzed.

This study aims to measure perceptions of family centered care among expectant mothers in Columbus while assessing potential racial differences in order to improve prenatal outcomes. In order to do this, surveys were distributed to pregnant women at 10 clinics providing prenatal care in Columbus and sleep sacks were provided to women who completed the survey. There was a total of 401 surveys collected between August 2019 and January 2020. The conclusion being that one in five women report not receiving family centered care during their prenatal appointments, however there was no racial difference for family centered care.

Neisseria meningitidis is the major cause of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) (Peterson et al, 2018). Approximately 10-15 percent of IMD cases result in debility including neurological impairment, amputation, and death (Peterson et al, 2018). Outbreaks of IMD are sporadic and unpredictable. The incidence of IMD varies geographically, but serogroup B has become more prevalent in recent years. PhD students have unique needs and require different resources and services from the library than undergraduates, which is especially true of professionals in a nursing program. As clinicians, many do not have experience with the research and writing intensive requirements of a doctoral degree. This report describes a research study to measure the effect of simulation on clinical educators’ knowledge and skills about effective formative feedback for prelicensure nursing students.

Subject Population: Clinical nurse educators who teach prelicensure nursing students in clinical education were recruited.

This study explores the experience of advanced nursing students who provided mentoring and tutoring to beginning nursing students. The experiences they describe are interpreted in light of literature on leadership education in undergraduate nursing schools, as well as that of peer mentoring and peer teaching. We also explored stress perceptions and investigated student satisfaction with the text message stress management program.
