In the late 1980s, nursing alumni, faculty, and students began planning for the one hundredth anniversary observance of the founding of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing. The school traces its rich heritage back to the organization of the Virginia Hospital Training School for Nurses which opened in 1893. Betsy A. Bampton (MCV Class of 1960) undertook the writing of a school history published as the centennial celebration was set to begin. A Descriptive Study Of The Academic And Professional Backgrounds Of Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurses In Iowa, Paulette M. Herold

The purpose of this study was to describe the professional backgrounds, experience, roles and responsibilities, and selected attitudes and opinions of cardiac rehabilitation nurses in the state of Iowa. Nurses were identified through the membership lists of the Iowa Association of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation (IACPR) and the American Association of Cardiovascular Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). Additional programs were identified through the Iowa Blue Cross/Blue Shield approved list of Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs in the state. A total of 100 surveys were mailed. The data results, based on the responses of 71 (71%) of these nurses, are summarized below.

This study identifies the occupational interests and predominant vocational personality types of freshmen students (undeclared majors, nursing majors, and non-nursing majors), explores perceptions about selected professional nursing functions and characteristics among the students, and examines perceptual differences between groups (majors).

A non-experimental ex post facto design is used to analyze data from 312 students in a large urban university. Descriptive and inferential statistics are applied in data analysis. This study investigated the size of the Practical Nursing schools, the student/faculty ratio, the admission process, the number of program hours as well as individual course hours of each program, specific aspects of articulation agreements in place, and the need for a bridge course and its contents. Also collected was demographic information regarding the students. The study involved the aggregate population of 43 Practical Nursing Programs in Virginia. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) and Videotape instruction on cognitive, transfer and retention learning consequences of RN students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. The sample consisted of 18 registered nurses who were enrolled in a sophomore level physical assessment course. The research design was a pretest-posttest experimental design. Mastery of Learning Theory and Transfer of Learning Theory provided the theoretical framework for this study. The purposes of this study were: to explore research utilization by three groups of Virginia nursing educators; and to determine if differences in stages of diffusion existed between nurse educators working in hospital diploma, associate degree and baccalaureate degree settings within the Commonwealth of Virginia. A stratified random sample included 28 hospital diploma, 41 associate degree and 37 baccalaureate degree nurse educators from the Commonwealth of Virginia, who completed the Nurse Educator Questionnaire (NEQ). Nurse educators and nursing service administrators have different expectations for the baccalaureate graduate nurse. The difference in expectations has made the transition from student to practitioner difficult for the new graduate.

The purpose of this study was to identify the ideal and real expectations regarding entry level performance as perceived by nurses who graduated in 1985 from 17 of 31 baccalaureate programs represented in the Consensus on Entry project. The ideal and real expectations of the graduates were compared to the nurse educators' and the nursing service administrators' results from the consensus on Entry project.

In this study the ability, achievement, demographic, and social interaction characteristics of three groups of baccalaureate nursing students were investigated. The three groups of students studied were dropouts, marginals, and high achievers. The purpose of the study was to identify predominant characteristics of dropout and marginal students that would act to direct the development of programs in nursing education.

The population studied consisted of the Nazareth College 1981-1982 freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior nursing students. In addition, the 1976-1980 graduating nursing classes were studied, including the freshman through senior year data for these classes.

During the first quarter of the twentieth century, when southern law and social practice demanded segregated facilities, the Medical College of Virginia established a separate school of nursing for African American women to provide trained personnel for the St. Philip Hospital. The Saint Philip School of Nursing opened with the hospital in the fall of 1920 and graduated 791 nurses during its 42-year history.
