Vaccinations are important factors in the eradication of most communicable diseases. Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine has been found to decrease the incidence and further spread of pertussis, and even nullify its existence, yet many postpartum mothers opt not to receive the vaccination even if eligible to do so. It was unknown whether clinical nursing staff at the project site had sufficient knowledge about Tdap vaccine to educate postpartum mothers to accept the vaccine. A convenient sample that consisted of 100 postgraduate pediatric nursing students enrolled in academic year (2016-2017) in both two semesters, 80 students enrolled in master program while 20 students enrolled in PhD program. Nurses are largely unaware of the problems of night-shift-nurse sleepiness and available strategies to manage night-shift sleepiness. The purpose of this project was to examine nurses' self-perception, awareness of sleepiness, and current strategies to manage this problem in the emergency medicine department of a major academic hospital in the western United States. The validated de-identified Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) was used to measure the prevalence and intensity of night shift nurses' sleepiness prior to the development of an educational program on strategies to manage sleepiness. The framework for my research includes a variety of different theoretical components including works from both major nursing and curriculum studies scholars. By December 2018, a large integrated health system’s Nurse Scholars Academy (NSA) will have financially-sponsored 64 registered nurses to return to school through a strategic academic-practice partnership program at the University of San Francisco (USF). Referred to as ‘Nurse Scholars,' health system employees elected to return-to-school through NSA. As a five-year initiative, NSA was at risk for not receiving additional funding beyond 2020 without a thorough outcomes analysis that articulated the outcomes to executive leadership.
