Metallic Nanoparticles And Cosmetics: The Role Of Mitochondria And Premature Aging, Veronica Montesinos-Cruz, Justin Olmanson

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The cosmetic industry has developed and commercialized numerous products using new technologies, making them increasingly appealing to the public. The use of metallic nanoparticles (MtNPs) as key ingredients in cosmetics has become more widespread due to their demonstrated benefits. However, the use of these products remains controversial, as some studies have shown that MtNPs can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and disrupt homeostatic balance. It has also been demonstrated that the interaction between MtNPs and keratinocytes increases the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can lead to oxidative stress, a condition associated with premature aging. Mitochondria, as …

Chitosan Nanoparticle Modifications For Improved Gene Delivery In An Oral Dna Vaccine Application, Austin Helmink Apr 2017

Chitosan Nanoparticle Modifications For Improved Gene Delivery In An Oral Dna Vaccine Application, Austin Helmink

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Vaccines represent one of the most significant medical innovations of the 20th century, resulting in the eradication or near eradication of a handful of deadly diseases. However, many infectious diseases remain resistant to effective vaccination, largely due to a lack full immune activation by traditional protein-based vaccines. A promising alternative vaccination strategy is the emerging development of DNA vaccines, which rely upon the delivery of exogenous genetic material to host cells encoding for a viral or bacterial antigen in order to induce a robust immune response by closely mimicking live infection. The delivery of genetic material requires a carrier …

Controversial And Non-Controversial Topics Of Nanotechnology, Phillip Astorino

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects

Advancements in medicine have allowed people to heal the sick. Even though these accomplishments in medicine have cured some of the problems, there are those that even medicine cannot fix. So we look to science for help, and there is one field that is close to revoluAonizing the world with their advancements in technology. This field has a specific name: Nanotechnology. It’s long-‐term goal is the full manipulaAon of atoms, molecules, and materials to form structures on the scale of one billionth of a meter, which is commonly known as a nanometer; not only can we use this to improve …
