Nursing | Senior Theses
Background: Quality patient handoff from Emergency Medical Services to the Emergency Department is a crucial transition of care that directly impacts patient safety, medical intervention, and patient outcomes. If concise, effective communication is not achieved, critical details can be left out resulting in medical errors, delayed intervention times, and lack of identification of clinical deterioration.
Aim: This study aims to understand how paramedic to nurse handoff quality impacts a nurse’s early identification of clinical deterioration.
Proposal:
Methodology: A quasi-experimental study of mixed-method research.
Recruitment strategy: A fire department in Marin County, CA and ED nurses from the base trauma center …
Enhancing Mass Casualty Incident Preparedness: Bridging The Gap Between Education And Practice, Emily M. Coggins
Enhancing Mass Casualty Incident Preparedness: Bridging The Gap Between Education And Practice, Emily M. Coggins
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The increasing amount of mass casualty incidents (MCIs), such as natural disasters, large-scale emergencies, and active shooter events, has emphasized the need for healthcare professionals to respond effectively. Traditional undergraduate nursing curriculum often offers limited opportunities for students to practice disaster preparedness through simulated experiences. This DNP project was created to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing an MCI training simulation to increase the confidence and competence of senior pre-licensure nursing students when responding to a mass casualty event. The project implemented a 1-day, simulation-based MCI event for senior nursing students enrolled in an Adult Health II course. The event included …

Increasing Documentation Of Endotracheal Tube Cuff Pressures: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Flight Crew Providers, Matthew D. Noss
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
ABSTRACT
Background: There was a lack of documentation of endotracheal tube (ETT) cuff pressures (CPs) by flight crew providers at Base 1 of HealthNet Aeromedical Services. A three-month pre-intervention data collection showed 1.8% of patients had initial CPs documented. Inadequate documentation and monitoring of ETT CPs can lead to patient complications such as tracheal injury and aspiration making this an important area for quality improvement.
Purpose: To increase documentation of ETT CPs through education and evidence-based interventions.
Intervention: This project implemented an educational in-service on ETT cuff syringe manometry for flight crew providers. The educational intervention consisted of …

A New Approach: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Artificial Intelligence Developments For Trauma Triage In The Emergency Department, William C. Anoka
A New Approach: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Artificial Intelligence Developments For Trauma Triage In The Emergency Department, William C. Anoka
2025 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Triage in emergent situations occurs when patients are assigned to areas of the hospital with different levels of care according to the perceived risks determined by their signs and symptoms. The variability of current triage protocols substantially increases the proportion of lower acuity patients who die unexpectedly due to improper risk stratification. However, recent artificial intelligence (AI) developments have been applied to trauma triage situations to improve accuracy and patient outcomes. To further evaluate the effectiveness of this new tool, this study used various AI models to assess the presenting assessments of multiple situations and determine the appropriate level of …
Stop The Bleed! Acute Epistaxis Management, Christopher R. Cannell
Stop The Bleed! Acute Epistaxis Management, Christopher R. Cannell
Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science
Epistaxis, the most common Otolaryngology-related emergency, is responsible for one in 200 emergency department (ED) visits in the United States (US) and one-third of otolaryngology visits.1,11 Up to 60% of the population will experience epistaxis during their lifetime, and 6% -10 % will require medical intervention.2,3 Epistaxis occurs in children and adults and has a seasonal variation. Although 85% of nosebleeds are idiopathic, they are more frequent in those on supplemental oxygen, anticoagulation, antiplatelet therapy, and in those with other conditions that may predispose them to bleeding. Most clinicians will encounter patients with acute epistaxis; therefore, it is …

Hypothermia In Patients With Traumatic Injuries: An Integrative Review, Andrew P. Gribble, David J. Saucedo
Master's Projects
Abstract
Background: An estimated 30-50% of severely injured patients with traumatic injuries will experience hypothermia. As a result of hypothermia, several clinical manifestations such as impaired coagulation, dissociation of the oxygen curve, cardiac arrhythmias, reduced cardiac output and death. Little evidence has been published promoting specific patient re-warming protocols and the best rewarming methods, active versus passive. Few studies have focused on the pre-hospitalization treatment for hypothermia and the overall effectiveness of interventions to mitigate hypothermia to reduce morbidity and mortality. Given this knowledge, the aim of this integrative review (IR) is to research and evaluate current practices regarding hypothermia …

Patient falls are a common inpatient dilemma and comprise the largest category of preventable adverse events in hospitalized patients. These events place a clinical burden on the patient, such as increased morbidity and reduced quality of life, in addition to an economic burden on the hospital system. Fall prevention strategies have the opportunity to decrease inpatient health care costs and length of stay. Several risk factors have been identified that contribute to inpatient falls and several strategies have been identified to minimize this risk. These risk factors are typically characterized as intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors include characteristics such …

Abstract
Purpose: Rapid clinical assessment of newly arriving direct admission veteran patients to the Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care System (VAHCS) Lexington is of the utmost importance to determine current patient condition, alteration from previously known condition at time of provider acceptance or time of report, and appropriate level of care for these veterans. The facility has seen an increase in the number of unexpected patient declines by direct admission patients presenting to medical surgical units at the VA Health Care System Lexington KY. This recurrent decline resulted in the facility performing a Root Cause Analysis (RCA), which identified …
Nursing Care During Natural Disasters, War Zones, And Mass Casualty Incidents: Implications For An Educational And Professional Overhaul, Erin N. White
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Emergency situations around the world are inevitable. Any nurse who practices for any period of time is sure to encounter situations like these. Their hospital may be flooded with traumatic and severely life-threatening patient cases where supplies can become scarce. In these situations, a nurse and all other healthcare personnel are expected to act effectively, efficiently and in a highly organized way. Despite this need, many hospitals fail to implement effective disaster preparedness programs and plans. This leaves healthcare workers at a loss for how to treat patients, communicate within and outside of the hospital, coordinate transport, and all the …
Improving Knowledge, Confidence, And Competency Among Icu Nurses Concerning The Benefits Of Using The Uk Ventilator Separation Protocol, Brittany Monroe
Improving Knowledge, Confidence, And Competency Among Icu Nurses Concerning The Benefits Of Using The Uk Ventilator Separation Protocol, Brittany Monroe
DNP Projects
Background: The trauma intensive care unit (ICU) at University of Kentucky (UK) Healthcare uses a ventilator separation protocol which provides specific guidelines on the successful weaning of patients from mechanical ventilation. However, many of the nurses are not aware of this protocol as formal education is not included in their orientation or training. This lack of knowledge can lead to risks such as increased patient morbidity, mortality, ICU length of stay, and healthcare-related costs. Research shows that using structured mechanical ventilator weaning tools in the ICU can shorten the duration of mechanical ventilation, which in turn, lowers these associated risks. …
Massive Transfusion And Shock Index, Kasey House
Massive Transfusion And Shock Index, Kasey House
MSN Capstone Projects
Hemorrhagic shock is one of the leading causes of preventable death in military trauma patients. Literature shows that pre-hospital transfusions of blood products within the combat environment have shown to have a greater likelihood of survival. This has produced a challenge in the pre-hospital setting to have a standardized method of predicting the patient’s need for a massive transfusion. In the last few years, the development of a Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) has become the standard to quickly deliver blood products to actively bleeding patients. Every minute waiting to administer blood products increases mortality by 5%.
While initiating an MTP …
Effect Of Confusion Assessment Scores On Identifying Delirium In Intensive Care Patients, Kayla Jacobs
Effect Of Confusion Assessment Scores On Identifying Delirium In Intensive Care Patients, Kayla Jacobs
Dissertations
Delirium in intensive care unit (ICU) patients can lead to increased length of stay in the hospital, increased risk of complications, increased polypharmacy, family distress and increased rate of mortality (Vasilevskis et al., 2018). Research has shown that addressing modifiable risk factors can improve survival rate by up to 15%, and routine screening for delirium in ICU patients leads to decreased patient anxiety, reduced in-hospital mortality, early recognition, and treatment of delirium (Krewulak et al., 2021 ; Vasilevskis et al., 2018). This quality improvement project used evidence-based intervention to increase accurate documentation of the confusion assessment method in the ICU …

Abstract
Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) support groups are vital to TBI survivors in the community and provide resources to family caregivers (FCs) to mitigate caregiver burden. Resiliency is a necessary characteristic to cope with chronic diseases and the demands of caregiving. However, a gap exists in how TBI support groups mitigate family stress and empower coping and resiliency for the TBI survivor and FCs. Method: The quality improvement project assessed TBI survivors' and FCs' coping and resiliency before and after an educational module on coping, resiliency, and self-care strategies. Intervention: A quality improvement project in a support group of …
Modified Early Warning Scoring (Mews) Versus Epic Deterioration Index (Edi): Battle Royale For Which Has The Best Patient Outcomes In The Inpatient Setting, Dirk A. Church
DNP Projects
Abstract
Background: The increased workload bedside nurses face today requires new tools to assist with the identification of deteriorating patients during hospitalization. The Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) tool has formed the background of early warning tools. Newer, more complex tools, like Epic’s Deterioration Index (EDI), have been developed to identify patient deterioration earlier. There is lack of evidence in the literature comparing different early warning tools, implementation, and patient outcomes.
Objective: The purpose of the study was to examine models for EWS notification for RRT and patient outcomes between the use of the MEWS and EDI in an adult, …

Postpartum Depression For Mothers With Early Fetal Death Or Stillbirths, Callie Goldman
Symposium of Student Scholars
Background: Many times, prevention of early fetus death and stillbirths is possible; however, some mortality events are spontaneous or unavoidable. While existing research reveals the likelihood of postpartum depression for mothers following birth, few studies address the potential for postpartum depression of mothers of stillbirth or demised fetuses. The purpose of this study is to determine how mothers can be better prepared for the hardship of losing a baby during childbirth, while going through common difficulties, such as postpartum depression, following birth. Methods: A mixed method approach will be conducted to gather qualitative (interview) and quantitative (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale …
Early And Progressive Mobility: A Program Implementation Strategy For High Acuity Patient Care Locations, Stefani Poland
Early And Progressive Mobility: A Program Implementation Strategy For High Acuity Patient Care Locations, Stefani Poland
Student Scholarly Projects
Despite an increase in the promotion of early progressive mobility, its decrease in hospital-acquired complications and improvement of patient outcomes, there remains a reluctance in staff commitment to daily evaluation and implementation. This is largely due to the fact nurses or other interprofessional staff are the primary individuals responsible for this change in process. A lack of confidence in staff to correctly identify patients that meet criteria and anxiety regarding the safe transfer or mobilization of patients, particularly in high acuity settings have been identified as major barriers. The PICOT question that guided this program development of a CBO toolkit …

Massive Blood Transfusion Practises: A Survey Of Level 1 Trauma Centers, Rebecca C. Parker
DNP Research Projects
Abstract
Background: Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for individuals under the age of 45 years old, regardless of race, origin, or sex (CDC, 2019). Among patients who sustain traumatic injury, hemorrhage remains the leading cause of death (American College of Surgeons [ACS], 2014). Hemodynamic stability may be achieved through administration of blood products such as packed red blood cells (PRBC), plasma, and platelets (PTL). Patients with severe exsanguination may require administration of blood products in large quantities, also known as a massive blood transfusion (MBT).
Local Problem: Nationally, traumatic injury accounts for over 150,000 deaths annually (American …

Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Problem: Ground-level falls among community-dwelling adults 60 years and older are significant and contribute to adverse health outcomes such as fractures, functional decline, disability, and death. Additionally, falls among community-dwelling older adults are the number one mechanism of injury seen at a Northern California Level II trauma center. Falls often lead to post-fall fear, activity restriction, and physical deconditioning, further compounding fall risk.
Context: When trauma centers provide targeted outreach and screening for unmanaged health risks such as falls, they reduce unnecessary disability and premature death in the local population. Reducing total fall victim numbers and fall recidivism also …
Developing An End-Of-Life Discussion Protocols, James Hawley
Developing An End-Of-Life Discussion Protocols, James Hawley
Rural Health Professions Projects
End of life (EOL) issues are far too often addressed reactively in Emergency Departments when patients can no longer express their wishes. This scenario can result in unwanted futile care, increased healthcare costs, and emotional hardships for family and healthcare workers. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement a provider-patient communication protocol that would shift advanced directive conversations proactively back into the local rural primary care setting.
