Background: Limited previous research has contrasted physical activity (PA) patterns in preschool children across different hourly patterns or segments of day, or adopted similar methodologies to compare the PA behaviors of children from different countries. The purpose of this study was to examine how the PA levels and patterns differed between 3- year-olds within and between childcare and homecare days in Finland and Australia. Material/Methods: ActiGraph GT3X accelerometers were used to monitor 121 (80 Finnish, 41 Australian) children’s PA for five consecutive days. Results: No significant country differences were observed in children’s daily total PA (light-tovigorous PA [LMVPA]), except that …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: During the last several years, diametrical difference in attitude to physical activity in youth has been noticed. Engagement in any form of physical activity always goes together with motivation for its undertaking, most often connected with realization of personal expectations. Its sources are perceived, among others, in interior factors, such as: joy resulting from participation in physical activity itself, personal achievements, and pleasure of finding release in movement or social contacts, e.g. spending time with friends. The present paper attempts to assess the motivation for additional physical activity undertaken by first-year students of the Faculty of Physical Education at …

Material/Methods: The study included data from 60 girls, aged 16-18. Voluntary participants were selected from a public high school in Poland. Number of steps was measured with a pedometer Yamax Digi-Walker, model SW 701, during 7 days. Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Despite the established benefits of cognitive and physical activity, a paucity of research examines the specific activities older adults favor, particularly those meeting the nationally recommended minimum duration of > 30 minutes per session. 260 non-demented, community-dwelling participants aged 70 and above self-reported the duration of their participation in 26 cognitive and physical activities during a typical week. Overall activity engagement was investigated by sex and educational level. The most endorsed physical activities were walking, stretching/yoga and gardening, while the most endorsed cognitive activities were reading magazines/newspapers, reading books, and doing crosswords. Walking (p = .048), swimming (p = .008), reading …

Can Physical Activity Modulate Pain Perception During Ontogenesis?, Maciej Pawlak, Aleksandra Jazdzewska, Katarzyna Leznicka
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
The aim of the paper is to emphasise the significance of physical activity as an element directly or indirectly modulating the perception of pain during ontogenesis. Pain is a distinctive sensory sensation and also a subjective criterion of health or disease. In contrast to other modalities (taste, smell, touch), it triggers solely negative emotions and sensations. Pain is a highly individualised sensory phenomenon, involving the physical, cognitive and emotional spheres of human life. Different reactions to pain during ontogeny most often result from the loss of communication skills, a systematic decrease in the functions of all systems and organs, in …

Physical Activity Of Working Age Wroclaw Residents With Reference To Their Income, Daniel Puciato, Michal Rozpara, Piotr Olesniewicz, Julita Markiewicz-Patkowska, Soňa Jandová
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: The aim of the paper was to assess the relationship between physical activity and the material status in working age residents of Wrocław, Poland. Material and methods: The research covered 3,495 people aged 18–65 years. The research tool was the short version of the IPAQ survey questionnaire. The following information was obtained: age, sex, height, weight, and gross monthly income per capita in the household. Basic statistical characteristics were calculated, as well as the Mann-Whitney test for samples with n > 20 and the Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA test. Statistical significance was assumed for p < 0.05. Results: In the weekly physical activity structure of the surveyed Wrocław residents, low-intensity activity was dominant. Usually, men were more engaged in physical activity of high intensity than women; women turned out more physically active than men within the range of low-intensity exercise. The gross monthly income per capita differentiated the categories of overall, moderate-intensity, and low-intensity physical activity in the surveyed women, and those of overall and low-intensity physical activity in the surveyed men. In both sexes, respondents with low income were characterised by the lowest physical activity. Women with medium income and men with high income were the most physically active. Conclusions: It seems necessary to include the poorest working age people in public health programs aimed at increasing the level of physical activity.
