Food Insecurity In Adolescent Athletes, Andrew Donaldson, Shannon Margherio, Jay Roberson, Kevin Latz

Research Days

Background: The prevalence of food insecurity among children in the United States is estimated at 21%. Food insecurity during childhood leads to worse school performance, more emotional and behavioral health concerns, and increased suicide attempts. Further, food insecurity has been noted to have multiple deleterious effects on the collegiate student athlete, including lower GPA, disordered eating, and substance use.

Hypothesis: Food insecurity is prevalent in the adolescent athlete population and exists across demographics.

Methods: Voluntary surveys were distributed to parents at all sports medicine clinics at our institution. Demographic data was collected including athlete age, race, school and school district, …

Assessing Ecg Abnormalities In Pediatric Athletes: A Retrospective Study On Incidence And Implications For Screening Protocols, Arkadeep Ghosh, Mark Gelatt, Lindsey Malloy-Walton, Ashley K. Sherman

Research Days

Background: Utilization of Electrocardiogram (ECG) screening in pediatric athletes remains controversial. The American Heart Association (AHA) hasn't supported the use of mandatory ECG screening for pediatric sports evaluations. The financial burden universal ECG screening in pediatric athletes poses on the healthcare system has supported that screening may not be justified given the low incidence of significant cardiac disease.

Objectives/Goal: This study aimed to examine the incidence, type of ECG abnormalities, and associated risk factors in healthy pediatric athletes.

Methods/Design: A single center retrospective cohort study was conducted on a local male youth competitive soccer program, ages 11-18. Exempt status was …

Conservative Management Of Medial Femoral Condyle Osteochondritis Dissecans In The Pediatric Knee, Kennedy J. Morey, Brian Harvey, Kennison Adams, El Domingo-Johnson, Angie Vanderpool, Natalie Stork, Donna Pacicca, Brian Lee, Kevin Latz

Research Days

This study investigates the effectiveness of various non-operative treatments for osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions in the medial femoral condyle (MFC) of the knee, a condition commonly affecting pediatric populations. Our project aims to evaluate outcomes such as symptom resolution, return to activity, and the potential for avoiding surgical intervention among patients undergoing different methods of conservative management. Through a retrospective analysis of patients, the study identifies trends in the effectiveness of different conservative treatment methods.

Background: Adaptive downhill skiing has been described as a fun, safe, engaging recreational activity for those with disabilities (Sterba, 2006). There are numerous ways the alpine skiing can be modified to meet these athletes’ needs. For instance, athletes can use tethered skis, horizontal poles held by their instructors, or modified walkers. For those that have poor standing balance, or are non-ambulatory, sit-skis are an option, with or without outriggers to add additional support and balance for athletes with poor trunk stability or core strength. These options provide equal and accessible alternatives for those with disabilities to get out and enjoy …

Background: COVID changed the sporting world over the past several years. As the pandemic winds down, it is important to study what effects the virus has on the athletes we serve. As we learn to live and participate in sport with the virus, it is inevitable that athletes will continue to be impacted by COVID. To the best of our knowledge, there is no data on the effects that COVID infection has on elite youth soccer athletes in the United States.

Objectives/Goal: Our purpose is to determine the risk of injury after a COVID infection in youth soccer athletes at …
