Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome Due To Post-Traumatic Osseous Tunnel Formation: A Rare Case And Surgical Management, Dev Y. Patel, Eshan Doshi, Fiona Zimmerman, Jamal Revolus, Michael Kimball, Michael Franco

Cooper Rowan Medical Journal

Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is classically a compressive neuropathy of the posterior tibial nerve beneath the flexor retinaculum, presenting with plantar foot pain and paresthesias. Standard surgical management of TTS involves release of the flexor retinaculum to decompress the nerve. We report a rare and unusual case of TTS in which the posterior tibial nerve was encased within a post-traumatic osseous tunnel accompanied by dense fibrotic tissue, representing an atypical and previously undescribed etiology of nerve entrapment. In this case, surgical decompression required a modified approach involving meticulous dissection of the tibial nerve from its encasement by heterotopic ossification and …

Effect Of Gait Retraining In Minimalist Footwear Or Barefoot On Running Footstrike And Cadence: A Systematic Review, John Desrochers, Alexis Chow, David Rubin, Altamash Raja

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Gait retraining programs take a structured approach to altering a runner's gait, often with the goal of decreasing footstrike angle and increasing cadence, as these outcomes have been correlated to a reduced rate of injury and optimal performance. Minimalist footwear, or running barefoot entirely, has been explored as a tool for gait adjustment in runners, largely due to the increased feedback from ground forces experienced by the runner. This systematic review aims to decipher the effect of gait retraining with minimalist footwear or barefoot running on footstrike angle and cadence. The comparison group included runners that underwent gait retraining in …

The Relationship Between Running Cadence And Stress Fractures In Competitive Distance Runners, Jason A. Richwall May 2025

The Relationship Between Running Cadence And Stress Fractures In Competitive Distance Runners, Jason A. Richwall

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Running is one of the most popular sports and forms of exercise worldwide. Stress fractures are a common and potentially season-ending injury among competitive distance runners, with recurrence rates as high as 22%. Biomechanical factors, including running cadence, have been implicated in injury risk, but their precise role remains an area of active investigation. This literature review examines the relationship between cadence and stress fractures, drawing data from both observational and experimental studies. Observational studies suggest that low cadence and rearfoot striking are associated with increased risk of bone stress injuries. Experimental studies reinforce these findings, demonstrating that increased cadence …

Does Sports-Specialization Increase The Risk Of Injury In Youth Athletes?, Kinjal Shah

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Sports specialization, defined as intensive, year-round training in a single sport for more than eight months per year, has become increasingly prevalent among youth athletes. While it is often pursued with the goal of elite performance, early specialization may increase the risk of both physical injuries and psychological strain. This risk is especially pronounced in individual sports such as swimming and tennis, where early and focused training is frequently encouraged. This study explores the association between early sports specialization and injury risk in young athletes, with the goal of identifying contributing factors and informing prevention strategies. Evidence suggests that while …
