Background

Temporary field hospitals play a crucial role in providing medical care to individuals who experience illnesses and injuries during mass gathering events. Handheld point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) devices offer an affordable and portable adjunct for emergency care. We present multiple patients from a field hospital during a marathon event in which handheld POCUS devices changed clinical management.

Introduction: Kickoffs in the National Football League (NFL) remain one of the most dangerous plays during an NFL game, with high levels of injuries. In 2024, the NFL implemented kickoff rules intended to reduce the number of injuries during this play, and improve player safety. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the 2024 NFL kickoff rules on the incidence of injuries during the kickoff. Background In 2023, Major League Baseball (MLB) implemented the pitch clock. The effects of the pitch clock on player injury rates is largely unknown, and some, including the major league baseball players association, have suggested that pitchers may be at an increased risk of injury with its implementation. Position players have received little attention in these discussions, even though they may be at the same theorized risk of injuries. Atraumatic ball thrower's humerus fracture is an uncommon, and poorly understood injury pattern. The majority of these cases are seen in untrained and younger individuals. A missed diagnosis could severely impact a patient's quality of life, as management is operative in most cases. Here, we present the case of a young patient, suffering an atraumatic "ball thrower's" fracture. We present images of this exceedingly rare injury pattern and showcase original artwork with a proposed mechanism of injury.

Physical inactivity (PI), defined as not meeting guidelines for physical activity beyond baseline daily living activities, is common among older adults (age 65 and older) and contributes to increased morbidity, increased mortality and increased health care spending. Understanding the clinical impact of PI on common medical conditions among older adults will help primary care physicians (PCPs) to educate these patients successfully. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and can severely affect function and quality of life. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is derived from a patient’s own blood and has potential as an adjunct to treat OA. Objective

The objective of this cross-sectional study is to evaluate the accuracy of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) resident palpation skills of hand and wrist joint and soft tissue structures using ultrasonography (US) verification.

Methods

PM&R residents palpated hand and wrist anatomic structures in an outpatient musculoskeletal (MSK) clinic. Once the presumed structures were localized, residents marked a one centimeter size circle on the overlying skin with an ink marker. The accuracy of the circle over the joint line and soft tissue structures was verified using US.

Introduction: Motocross is a sport in which riders race 250–450 cc four-stroke dirt bikes and are potentially subjected to a high frequency of head injuries starting at a very young age. The objective of this case series is to present the findings following gradient echo T2-weighted MRI (SWI) upon clinical evaluation after a concussion in 4 young professional motocross racers.

Clinical Findings: Microhemorrhages were found in 2 of 4 riders. Areas of microhemorrhages were not aligned with a previously positive CT finding from a prior concussion in 1 rider.
