Ratio Of Vascular Pedicle Width And Thoracic Diameter To Differentiate Cardiogenic And Non-Cardiogenic Pulmonary Edema, Rahmi Afifi, Achmad Fachri, Amir Sjarifuddin Madjid, Joedo Prihartono, Marcel Prasetyo, Andreas Christian

Makara Journal of Health Research

Background: Excess intravascular volume evaluation is essential in the intensive care unit (ICU); however, clinical information to differentiate cardiogenic and non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema has been proven ineffective. Thus, this study aimed to distinguish cardiogenic from non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema using the ratio of vascular pedicle width (VPW) to thoracic diameter (VPTR).

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted based on secondary data from chest radiographs of 100 patients with clinical symptoms of pulmonary edema in the ICU from January 2013 to December 2015. Cardiogenic and non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema were distinguished using VPW and cardiothoracic ratio measurements (CTR). VPTR was measured …

Different types of medical imaging are increasingly being used to explain specific aspects of injuries to patients during consultations. However, there are no validated questionnaires available yet that specifically measure patients’ satisfaction with the use of such images. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a patient-centred measure of satisfaction with the use of medical imaging modalities in clinical treatment. A preliminary 22-item version of the Questionnaire for Patient Satisfaction with Imaging (QPSI) was developed based on extant literature and interviews with trauma patients. Final item selection and psychometric evaluations were conducted amongst a sample of 106 …

Objectives. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential use of Prostate Imaging – Reporting and Data System version 2 (PI-RADS) in combination with Glutathione S-transferase P1 (GST-P1) expression for an improved diagnosis of prostate cancer, in patients with inconclusive values of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Materials and Methods. The study was conducted on 80 patients for whom PSA values were evaluated and were found to be inconclusive (4-10 ng/ml). These patients underwent imagistic evaluation (PI-RADS), followed by transurethral prostate biopsy, with the evaluation of GST-P1 expression and histopathological examination (for diagnosis confirmation). Results. By combining the results of …

A Case Of Malpositioned Endotracheal Tube With Resultant Left Lung Collapse., Anushri Naga, Anushri Naga

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine

BACKGROUND

ENDOTRACHEAL INTUBATION IS USUALLY DONE AS A PART OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OF PATIENTS WITH A THREATENED AIRWAY AND GENERAL ANAESTHSIA, IN ORDER TO ENSURE PATENCY OF THE AIRWAY AS WELL AS PROPER VENTILATION. POSITIONING AN ET TUBE CORRECTLY IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE IN ORDER TO PREVENT HYPOVENTILATION, INAPPROPRIATE VENTILATION AND ALSO COLLAPSE OF LUNG DUE TO MALPOSITIONING OF ET TUBE.

ETT POSITION IS USUALLY ASSESSED USING FRONTAL CHEST RADIOGRAPH. THE POSITION OF THE ETT IS DEPENDENT ON THE POSITION OF THE HEAD & NECK. THE MANDIBLE CAN BE USED FOR ASSESSMENT OF WHETHER THE NECK IS IN A NEUTRAL …

Free Silicone-Induced Granulomatosis And Hypercalcemia In A Transgender Female, Brian L. Pando, Benjamin Goldsmith, Adam Lane Webb, Komal Kinger, Brian Helmly

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Vitamin D derangements are a rare but important cause of hypercalcemia. Granulomatous disease is a primary cause of vitamin D derangements and is frequently associated with sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, and in the present case, foreign body granulomatosis. Liquid or injectable silicone is used as a filler for cosmetic body contouring. Transgender patients may seek silicone injections as part of gender affirmation surgeries. Granuloma formation is a rare but well-described complication of injectable silicone.

Case Description

A 40-year-old, assigned male at birth (AMAB) transgender female patient, with a history of HIV and chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 3b, was admitted to …

Thyrotoxic Periodic Paralysis: A Case Report And Discussion Of Clinical And Imaging Features, Kristian Quevada, Kishan Patel, Pauline Germaine

Cooper Rowan Medical Journal

Thyrotoxic Periodic Paralysis (TPP) is a rare manifestation of thyrotoxicosis, resulting in periodic episodes of acute onset muscle weakness in the setting of hypokalemia. The thyrotoxic form of Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis (HPP) is less studied than the more well-known familial form due to fewer reported cases and smaller prevalence. This case study presents a 30-year-old African American male with multiple episodes of acute lower extremity muscle weakness, tachycardia, and a history of heat intolerance. Abnormal findings on thyroid ultrasound coupled with increased thyroid related immunoglobulins led to a diagnosis of TPP related to exacerbation of newly-found Graves’ disease. The case …

Dpo: Diffuse Pulmonary Ossification - A Diagnostic Challenge, Gaetano Rea, Giuliana Giacobbe, Danila Caroppo, Silvia Iovine, Roberta Lieto, Marialuisa Bocchino, Tullio Valente, Angelantonio Maglio, Alessandro Vatrella

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

Diffuse pulmonary ossification (DPO) is a rare condition of DLD (diffuse lung disease) characterized by the presence of metaplastic ectopic bone in the lungs and is less frequent in patients without a clear background of lung diseases. DPO is characterized by very small calcific nodules, often with bone mature located in both lungs and often in peripheral areas of the lungs. Two patterns of DPO have been recognized dendriform and nodular. The dendriform type is less common and is characterized by a coral-like network of bone spiculae along the alveolar septa and is often related to interstitial fibrosis or chronic …
