Is Your Cyst Really A Ganglion Cyst? A Case Report Of Angioleiomyoma Mimicking A Plantar Fascia Cystic Lesion, Christopher Anjorin Ms Dpmc, Joseph Bender Dpm Dec 2026

Is Your Cyst Really A Ganglion Cyst? A Case Report Of Angioleiomyoma Mimicking A Plantar Fascia Cystic Lesion, Christopher Anjorin Ms Dpmc, Joseph Bender Dpm

School of Podiatric Medicine - Student Research

Ganglion cysts are among the most common benign soft tissue masses encountered in podiatric clinical practice, and their diagnosis is often presumed based on location, clinical observation, and transillumination. However, this case highlights a diagnostic idiosyncrasy: a lesion clinically presumed to be a ganglion cyst within the plantar fascia was ultimately identified as an angioleiomyoma following surgical excision and histopathological evaluation. This finding underscores the importance of maintaining a broad differential diagnosis when assessing cystic lesions, particularly those that transilluminate, as benign vascular tumors may closely mimic more common entities in both clinical presentation and imaging. More importantly, what if …

Ai-Driven Segmentation And Volumetric Response Modeling Of Liver Regions To Radiotherapy, Aashish Chandra Gupta Aug 2026

Ai-Driven Segmentation And Volumetric Response Modeling Of Liver Regions To Radiotherapy, Aashish Chandra Gupta

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

In liver-directed radiotherapy (RT), liver regions receiving higher doses typically undergo atrophy while contralateral/adjacent lower-dose regions may exhibit compensatory hypertrophy through regeneration of healthy tissue. Optimizing the RT plan to promote regional hypertrophy while minimizing the risk of developing atrophy has the potential to enhance post-RT liver function and long-term survivorship. However, current clinical practice largely relies on global liver dose-volume metrics during RT-planning, which may obscure favorable dose-response correlation and limit actionable guidance for clinicians. Therefore, we hypothesized that post-RT regional liver response is governed by a combination of region-specific dose-volume and patient clinical features, and that these responses …

Aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that primarily arises in the perineum and pelvis of young females. It is sometimes identified incidentally on pelvic examination and obstetric imaging. Although asymptomatic at small sizes, AAM is typically hypervascular and can grow large enough to complicate a patient's obstetric and gynecologic course of treatment. While AAM is a rare diagnosis reported in the literature, there are limited descriptions of its multimodal radiologic appearance, and uncommonly, it can present as a hypovascular mass. We describe a rare case of hypovascular AAM in pregnancy that did not respond favorably to targeted embolization, …

Background: Accurate segmentation of brain metastases (BM) is essential for diagnosis, stereotactic radiosurgery planning, and longitudinal assessment. However, manual contouring is time-intensive, limiting clinical scalability, and exhibits substantial inter-observer variability. This variability complicates objective assessment of automated segmentation methods and challenges interpretation of model performance.

Purpose: To address these limitations, we developed TUM-SAM, a hybrid foundation-model framework for fully automated BM segmentation, and introduced a bias-controlled, blinded multi-rater evaluation paradigm to determine whether AI-based BM segmentation has reached expert-level performance and whether AI-generated contours are preferred by human experts under unbiased assessment.

Methods: TUM-SAM integrates nnU-Net-based lesion detection with a …

Letter To The Editor: Hemodynamic Role In Hepatic Encephalopathy Pathogenesis Following Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt Placement, John Halphen, Yash S Dayal, Cameron Laurie, Mohadese Ahmadzade, David Wynne, Mohammad Ghasemi-Rad

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a common complication following transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement and is thought to result from reduced hepatic detoxification of neurotoxins. However, Zhuang et al in the World Journal of Radiology demonstrate that this understanding may be incomplete through exploration of the pathophysiology from a hemodynamic perspective. They found significant changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and spontaneous brain activity following TIPS. Initially, CBF increased in specific areas within the first month, followed by a return to baseline at three months. These CBF changes coincided with increased spontaneous brain activity that persisted in some areas, suggesting …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Volumetric modulated arc therapy-computed tomography (VMAT-CT), which is the CT reconstructed using the portal images collected during VMAT, can potentially be an effective onsite imaging tool. The goal of this study was to propose an iterative reconstruction algorithm that can further improve the image quality of VMAT-CT and reduce the number of failed reconstructions. An iterative algorithm combining total variation (TV) with block-matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) was proposed, addressing the L1-L2 regularization problem using the split Bregman method. We collected portal images from 67 VMAT cases including 50 phantom and 17 real-patient cases. Both Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK) and TV-BM3D iterative …

Pulmonary nocardiosis, a rare and diagnostically challenging infection, usually presents with heterogeneous radiographic findings, compounded by the low sensitivity of traditional confirmatory cultures. In their most recent work, Wang et al analyzed 102 patients with pulmonary nocardiosis to address these concerns, investigating species-characteristic imaging patterns, pathological associations, and the role of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the diagnostic approach. High-resolution computed tomography (CT) in adult patients with pulmonary infections caused by Nocardia wallacei was demonstrated to have a sensitive (85.71%) and specific (83.34%) presentation of bronchopneumonia in relation to the five Nocardia species in the sample with CT data. The gut-brain axis is increasingly recognized as a critical contributor to Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis, yet the therapeutic impact of microbiota modulation remains unclear due to lack of clinical trials in drug-naïve patients. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2 trial to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of repeated donor fecal microbiota transplantation (dFMT) in de novo PD. FMT was administered for seven days (200 mL on days 1-3; 50 mL on days 4-7) per 4-week cycle. Seventy-two patients were randomized 1:1 to receive dFMT or autologous FMT (aFMT), and 66 completed the trial. At 35 weeks, the …

Simulation-Free Spine Palliative Radiotherapy Enabled By Ai-Adapted Diagnostic Ct, Yiding Han, Alexander Nicola Hanania, Zaid Ali Siddiqui, Vincent Ugarte, Boran Zhou, Abdallah S R Mohamed, Piyush Pathak, Daniel Allen Hamstra, Baozhou Sun

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Radiotherapy planning traditionally requires a dedicated simulation CT (sCT), which can introduce delays in initiating treatment. This is particularly impactful in spinal palliative care, where timely treatment is often important for symptom control and prevention of neurological deterioration. Although diagnostic CT (dCT) is frequently available earlier in the workflow, it can lead to geometric and dosimetric inaccuracies when used directly for treatment planning due to discrepancies in patient positioning, vertebral alignment, and table curvature.

Purpose: To develop and evaluate an AI-based method that transforms dCT into a simulation-equivalent planning CT (AI-pCT), enabling a clinically feasible simulation-free workflow for spinal …

BACKGROUND: Stroke leads to complex chronic structural and functional brain changes that specifically affect motor outcomes. The brain predicted age difference (PAD) has emerged as a sensitive biomarker of both sensorimotor and cognitive function after stroke. Our previous study showed a higher global brain PAD associated with poorer motor function after stroke. However, the association between local stroke lesion load, regional brain age, and motor impairment is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations between focal lesion damage, regional brain PAD in both hemispheres, and motor outcomes in chronic stroke, and to identify key predictors of motor impairment.

Microwave ablation is an effective treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma, but tumors adjacent to extrahepatic organs carry a higher risk for thermal injury. Thermoprotective techniques such as hydrodissection and gallbladder decompression can reduce this risk and expand the range of lesions amenable to percutaneous treatment. We present a case of a 68-year-old woman with hepatocellular carcinoma in hepatic segment V, with partial treatment response from prior transarterial chemoembolization. Due to the lesion's proximity to the gallbladder and transverse colon, microwave ablation was performed with concurrent ultrasound- and CT-guided gallbladder decompression and hydrodissection. The ablation was technically successful without post-procedural complications. At …

This study compares myocardial injury responses in human donor hearts from donation after brain death (DBD) and donation after circulatory death (DCD), with a focus on myocardial membrane integrity, pyroptosis, and damage. Unlike DCD hearts, which are exposed to varying durations of functional warm ischemic time (fWIT), DBD hearts, which are never subjected to warm ischemia, served as controls. A total of 24 human hearts were procured, consisting of 6 from the DBD group and 18 from the DCD group. All procured hearts were placed in cold normal saline and stored for up to 6 h. Left ventricular biopsies were …

Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in infants remains a therapeutic challenge. In preclinical studies we previously identified bortezomib and vorinostat as active agents against KMT2A rearranged (KMT2Ar) leukaemia. The aim of this study was to determine the tolerability of incorporating bortezomib and vorinostat into an acute lymphoblastic leukaemia-chemotherapy backbone for newly diagnosed infants with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia both with and without KMT2Ar.

Methods: In this single-arm phase 1/2 study conducted at 18 hospitals in the USA and Canada, we enrolled patients aged 1 year or younger at the time of diagnosis with newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia or undifferentiated leukaemia (with …

Objectives: The gonial angle could be one of the contributing factors for the continuous bone resorption in edentulous persons. This study aimed to examine the association between the gonial angle and RRR in edentulous patients receiving mandibular implant-supported overdenture (ISOD) and to compare different gonial angle measuring techniques. Methods: Twenty-three individuals with opposing mandibular ISOD and maxillary full dentures were recruited. The proportional area index was used to calculate the posterior RRR. Orthopantomographs (OPGs) pre- and four years post-implant insertion were compared. Comparison of the gonial angle measurements was made on 5 patients using four measurement methods: (i) Two different …

Background: The reprogramming of fibroblasts into (induced) cardiomyocytes offers a direct myocardial regeneration strategy for improving postinfarction myocardial function. Compared to lower-order species, human cells are relatively resistant to such reprogramming. We previously found that p63-transactivation inhibitory domain (TID; the portion of p63 that physical interacts and interferes with its activation of the epigenetic repressor HDAC1) combined with the cardio-differentiation factors Hand2 and Myocardin (HM) enhanced rat and human cell transdifferentiation. The present study sought to determine the in vivo effects of this reprogramming strategy in a rat myocardial infarction model.

Methods: Adult male and female rats underwent left anterior …

Objective: Evolving training paradigms in cardiothoracic surgery (CTS) are changing the educational needs of integrated residents and traditional fellows. Educational research is important for evaluating specialty training. This study assessed CTS education articles to analyze their prevalence, content, and reach.

Methods: In a cross-sectional observational study of education articles published on North American CTS programs from January 2013 through December 2023, articles were identified by querying PubMed, other databases, and journals. Articles that passed an initial abstract review underwent full-text review. Articles were organized by content into 9 categories: curriculum, simulation, trainee assessment, program evaluation, wellness/burnout, diversity/inclusion, mentorship/career, outcomes, and …
