Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Objective: To highlight detection of left ventricular thrombi on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) viability studies.

Method: This retrospective observational study was conducted in the Radiology Department at our Hospital in Dhahran, from April 2015-2019. All recently re-perfused (post-percutaneous coronary intervention/ PCI) patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarctions (STEMI), having low ejection fractions (

Results: Of the 125 patients, most were men (71.2%) with a mean age of 56.78 years. Eleven patients had left ventricular thrombi (8.8%), and most of these were anterior wall infarctions with low ejection fractions (

Conclusion: Left ventricular thrombi can be detected on cardiac viability studies …

Investigating The Metabolic Progression Of Glioblastoma With Hyperpolarized Magnetic Resonance, Travis Salzillo Aug 2020

Investigating The Metabolic Progression Of Glioblastoma With Hyperpolarized Magnetic Resonance, Travis Salzillo

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Rapid diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of aggressive diseases such as glioblastoma (GBM) can improve patient survival by providing physicians the time to optimally deliver treatment. This includes early in development, while the tumor is still manageable, or following initial therapy, when alternative treatments should be considered. The main goal of this project was to determine whether metabolic imaging with hyperpolarized magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) could detect changes in tumor progression more rapidly than conventional anatomic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patient-derived GBM murine models. To comprehensively capture the dynamic nature of cancer metabolism, in vivo pyruvate-to-lactate conversion with hyperpolarized MRI, …

Development Of A Ct Metal Artifact Management Algorithm For Proton Therapy Planning (Ampp) For Head And Neck Cancer Patients, Daniela Branco Aug 2020

Development Of A Ct Metal Artifact Management Algorithm For Proton Therapy Planning (Ampp) For Head And Neck Cancer Patients, Daniela Branco

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Purpose: Dental amalgams (high Z materials) are common sources of artifacts in Head and Neck (HN) images. Commercial artifact reduction techniques have been offered, but many are impractical, produce inaccurate CT images or are not clinically available, thus not widely implemented. The goal of this work is to use CT gantry tilts to develop and evaluate a stereoscopic HN metal artifact management algorithm and investigate its improvement in proton treatment planning.

Methods: The in-house CT metal artifact management method for proton planning (AMPP) uses two angled CT scans to generate a single image set with no metal artifacts posterior …

Mechanical Thrombectomy For Acute Ischemic Stroke In The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory., Steven A Guidera, Sudhir Aggarwal, J Doyle Walton, David Boland, Roy Jackel, Jeffrey D Gould, Brooke Kearins, Joseph Mcgarvey, Yan Qi, Brian Furlong Apr 2020

Mechanical Thrombectomy For Acute Ischemic Stroke In The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory., Steven A Guidera, Sudhir Aggarwal, J Doyle Walton, David Boland, Roy Jackel, Jeffrey D Gould, Brooke Kearins, Joseph Mcgarvey, Yan Qi, Brian Furlong

Department of Radiology & Diagnostic Medical Imaging

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of establishing a mechanical thrombectomy (MT) program for acute ischemic stroke in a community hospital using interventional cardiologists working closely with neurologists.

BACKGROUND: American Heart Association/American Stroke Association 2018 guidelines give a Class I (Level of Evidence: A) recommendation for MT in eligible patients with large vessel occlusion stroke. Improvement in neurological outcomes with MT is highly time sensitive. Most hospitals do not have trained neurointerventionalists to perform MT, leading to treatment delays that reduce the benefit of reperfusion therapy.

METHODS: An MT program based in the cardiac catheterization …

Pediatric Chest X-Rays, Liam Du Preez Jan 2020

Pediatric Chest X-Rays, Liam Du Preez

Larner College of Medicine Fourth Year Advanced Integration Teaching/Scholarly Projects

Chest Radiographs are the most commonly ordered diagnostic image in the pediatric population. These images are encountered often in both the early medical school curriculum and outside in the clinical setting. This module was generated with the goals of giving a framework for approaching pediatric chest x-rays, as well as showcasing common radiographic findings, both normal and pathologic.

Lead X-Ray Vests: Pros And Cons In Dental Radiography And Patient Education On Radiographic Technology, Kayla D. Oakley, Emily Deker Jan 2020

Lead X-Ray Vests: Pros And Cons In Dental Radiography And Patient Education On Radiographic Technology, Kayla D. Oakley, Emily Deker

Dental Hygiene Student Scholarship

Problem: There is a greater need to emphasize and educate patients and providers about radiologic advancements and patient exposure. The tradition of placing lead x-ray vests on patients for all radiographs is no longer a necessity. Without the explanation of why lead aprons are no longer needed, unnecessary steps for the provider and potential harm to the patient could be caused.

Methods: This review of literature was assembled by analyzing data from primary and secondary sources through online databases. The most recent research on the risks and benefits of the use of lead x-ray vests towards patients in …

What Is Scannable? An Mri Safety Guide, Michael Burcescu, Ravi Patel, Robert Hessemer, Peter Lore, Sriharsha Kota, Guarav Kumar Jan 2020

What Is Scannable? An Mri Safety Guide, Michael Burcescu, Ravi Patel, Robert Hessemer, Peter Lore, Sriharsha Kota, Guarav Kumar

West Florida Division Virtual Research Day 2020

Supernumerary MRI protocols and recommendations exist to guide physicians at the forefront of patient care. While urgent imaging may be necessary for critical patients, inadvertent imaging of implantable devices can incur serious morbidity and mortality[11]. The American College of Radiology published a 30-page manual in 2013[1] on MRI safe practices and releases yearly updates with critical information separately[2]. There is increased utilization of advanced imaging modalities, especially among academic institutions[3]. Physicians are hard pressed to maximize efficiency; uncertainty delays imaging. Moreover, inappropriate orders delay appropriate management. We present pertinent and often questioned considerations in a comprehensible format along with devices …
