Recent Progress In The Theranostics Application Of Nanomedicine In Lung Cancer., Anubhab Mukherjee, Manash Paul, Sudip Mukherjee

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) causes around 80% to 90% of deaths. The lack of an early diagnosis and inefficiency in conventional therapies causes poor prognosis and overall survival of lung cancer patients. Recent progress in nanomedicine has encouraged the development of an alternative theranostics strategy using nanotechnology. The interesting physico-chemical properties in the nanoscale have generated immense advantages for nanoparticulate systems for the early detection and active delivery of drugs for a better theranostics strategy for lung cancer. This present review provides a detailed overview of the …

The development of cancer is driven by the accumulation of many oncogenesis-related genetic alterations and tumorigenesis is triggered by complex networks of involved genes rather than independent actions. To explore the epistasis existing among oncogenesis-related genes in lung cancer development, we conducted pairwise genetic interaction analyses among 35,031 SNPs from 2027 oncogenesis-related genes. The genotypes from three independent genome-wide association studies including a total of 24,037 lung cancer patients and 20,401 healthy controls with Caucasian ancestry were analyzed in the study. Using a two-stage study design including discovery and replication studies, and stringent Bonferroni correction for multiple statistical analysis, we …

Sociodemographic Background Characteristics Of Patients Who Participate In A Lung Cancer Screening Program, Amber Zhang, Marcella Pimpinelli, Brooke Ruane, Russell K. Mcintire, Julie Barta, Md, Hee-Soon Juon, Bridget Jackson Feb 2019

Sociodemographic Background Characteristics Of Patients Who Participate In A Lung Cancer Screening Program, Amber Zhang, Marcella Pimpinelli, Brooke Ruane, Russell K. Mcintire, Julie Barta, Md, Hee-Soon Juon, Bridget Jackson

Phase 1

Introduction: Despite decreasing lung cancer incidence and mortality rates, disparities in prevalence and outcomes persist between Black and White patients. Secondary analysis of the National Lung Screening Trial found screening with low-dose CT (LDCT) reduced lung cancer mortality more in Blacks than Whites. However, it is unknown if racial disparities exist in screening results, and the involved sociodemographic factors.

Objective: The study aims to analyze characteristics that may predict screening outcomes (Lung-RADS category) in patients who received LDCT through the Jefferson Lung Cancer Screening Program (LCSP).

Methods: Retrospective data (n=733, May 2015 to July 2017) were merged with prospective …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Posters

OBJECTIVES

  • To define the mutant p53-regulated transcriptome of lung cancer cells with alterations at V157 and R158 in the p53 tumor suppressor.
  • To determine the biological effects of lung-enriched p53 mutations in lung cancer cells.

A 59-year-old male patient developed a new 4 cm × 6 cm cavitary left upper lung lesion over a 2 months period. The patient had a prior history of a surgically resected Stage IA non-small cell lung cancer in the right upper lobe 3 years prior. He was treated for possible infection with radiographic improvement on subsequent imaging. Further imaging after 3 months revealed an oval soft tissue density within the cavity with air crescent sign. Bronchoscopy with transbronchial biopsies showed an acute and chronic granulomatous inflammation. Aspergillus fumigatus was noted on culture and voriconazole was initiated. Subsequent imaging showed …

Rationale: Cone Beam Computed Tomography imaging has become increasingly important in many fields of interventional therapies. Objective: Lung navigation study which is an uncommon soft tissue approach. Methods: As no effective organ radiation dose levels were available for this kind of Cone Beam Computed Tomography application we simulated in our DynaCT (Siemens AG, Forchheim, Germany) suite 2 measurements including 3D acquisition and again for 3D acquisition and 4 endobronchial navigation maneuvers under fluoroscopy towards a nodule after the 8th segmentation in the right upper lobe over a total period of 20 minutes (min). These figures reflect the average complexity and …

Strategies to enhance the already established doublet chemotherapy regimen for lung cancer have been investigated for more than 20 years. Initially, the concept was to administer chemotherapy drugs locally to the tumor site for efficient diffusion through passive transport within the tumor. Recent advances have enhanced the diffusion of pharmaceuticals through active transport by using pharmaceuticals designed to target the genome of tumors. In the present study, five patients with non-small cell lung cancer epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) negative stage IIIa–IV International Union Against Cancer 7 (UICC-7), and with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) 2 scores were administered platinum-based …

Brief Report: A Phase Ii "Window-Of-Opportunity" Frontline Study Of The Mtor Inhibitor, Temsirolimus Given As A Single Agent In Patients With Advanced Nsclc, An Ncctg Study, Nicholas F. Reuter Md

Articles

BACKGROUND:

In an effort to evaluate the single agent activity of temsirolimus in previously untreated non-small-cell lung cancer, the North Central Cancer Treatment Group undertook a frontline "window-of-opportunity" study.

METHODS:

Patients received 25 mg of temsirolimus administered intravenously as a weekly 30 minute infusion, on a 4-week cycle. Based on a two-stage Fleming design, the treatment would be promising if at least four of the first 25 evaluable patients in stage I or at least six of the 50 evaluable patients at the end of stage II have a confirmed response. Fresh tumor biopsies were obtained to evaluate predictive markers …
