This cross-sectional study examined the associations between neighborhood-level socioeconomic-status (NSES), and psychosocial functioning and personality pathology among 335 adults drawn from the Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study. Participants belonged to four personality disorder (PD) diagnostic groups: Avoidant, Borderline, Schizotypal, and Obsessive Compulsive. Global functioning, social adjustment, and PD symptoms were assessed following a minimum two-year period of residential stability. Residence in higher-risk neighborhoods was associated with more PD symptoms and lower levels of functioning and social adjustment. These relationships were consistent after controlling for individual-level socioeconomic-status and ethnicity; however, the positive association between neighborhood-level socio-economic risk and PD symptoms was …

Objective: To establish family and peer correlates of personality traits shown to be predictive of future criminal recidivism. Method: 137 incarcerated boys aged 13-18 (x = 16 ± 1.2), 35% black, 21% Hispanic, 43% white, and 1% other completed the Weinberger Adjustment Inventory (WAI) and a psychosocial history obtained by a social worker. Records were summarized using two raters who assigned numerical ratings to dimensions of family and peer relations. Results: As expected, observer ratings of family and peer relationships were correlated with the personality characteristics of distress, denial and restraint as measured by the WAI. Conclusion: Family and peer …

BACKGROUND: The tobacco withdrawal syndrome indicates the development of neurophysiologic dependence. Clinical evidence indicates that neurophysiologic dependence develops through a set sequence of symptom presentation that can be assessed with a new 3-item survey measure of wanting, craving, and needing tobacco, the Level of Physical Dependence (PD). This study sought to determine if advancing neurophysiologic dependence as measured by the Level of PD correlates with characteristics of white matter structure measured by Fractional Anisotropy (FA).
METHODS: Diffusion-MRI based FA and diffusion tensor imaging probabilistic tractography were used to evaluate 11 smokers and 10 nonsmokers. FA was also examined in relation …

CONTEXT: Evidence for the efficacy of combination pharmacotherapy has been limited and without positive trials in geriatric patients with major depression (MD) with psychotic features. OBJECTIVES: To compare remission rates of MD with psychotic features in those treated with a combination of atypical antipsychotic medication plus a serotonin reuptake inhibitor with those treated with antipsychotic monotherapy; and to compare response by age. DESIGN: Twelve-week, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial. SETTING: Clinical services of 4 academic sites. Patients Two hundred fifty-nine subjects with MD with psychotic features randomized by age ( or =60 years) (mean [standard deviation (SD)], 41.3 [10.8] years in …

A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo Controlled Trial Of Ramelteon For The Treatment Of Insomnia And Mood Stability In Patients With Euthymic Bipolar Disorder, Edward Norris
Edward R Norris MD, FAPA, FAPM
The study was a single-site, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group study to evaluate the efficacy of adjunctive ramelteon in the treatment of insomnia and mood stability in patients with euthymic bipolar disorder for up to 24 weeks of maintenance treatment. Participants with euthymic bipolar disorder and sleep disturbances were randomized to receive adjunctive ramelteon or placebo in addition to their reular psychiatric medications for up to 24 weeks or until they experienced a relapse (defined as a depressed or manic event).

Which Stressors Are Associated With Which Forms Of Depression In A Homogenous Sample? An Analysis Of The Effects Of Lifestyle Changes And Demands On Five Subtypes Of Depression, Vicki Bitsika, Christopher Sharpley
Vicki Bitsika
Background: Although depression is often considered as a single or unitary construct, evidence indicates the existence of several major subtypes of depression, some of which have distinct neurobiological bases and treatment options. Objective: To explore the incidence of five subtypes of depression, and to identify which lifestyle changes and stressor demands are associated with each of five established subtypes of depression, within a homogenous non-clinical sample. Method: 398 Australian university students completed the Effects of University Study on Lifestyle Questionnaire to identify their major stressors, plus the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale to measure their symptomatology. Regression analysis was used to …

Towards Objectively Quantifying Sensory Hypersensitivity: A Pilot Study Of The “Ariana Effect.”, Vassilis N. Panagopoulos, Deanna J. Greene, Meghan C. Campbell, Kevin J. Black
Kevin J. Black, MD
Background. Normally one habituates rapidly to steady, faint sensations. People with sensory hypersensitivity (SH), by contrast, continue to attend to such stimuli and find them noxious. SH is common in Tourette syndrome (TS) and autism, and methods to quantify SH may lead to better understanding of these disorders. In an attempt to objectively quantify SH severity, the authors tested whether a choice reaction time (CRT) task was a sensitive enough measure to detect significant distraction from a steady tactile stimulus, and to detect significantly greater distraction in subjects with more severe SH.
Methods. Nineteen ambulatory adult volunteers with varying scores …
