In this study, caregiver burden measures the psychosocial strain a caregiver experiences as a result of caring for a person with autism. In addition, this study focuses on the effect of socioeconomic status on caregiver burden. A previous study found an association between lower primary caregiver education level and more sleep problems for children with autism³. Thus, the finding focuses on the child with autism as opposed to the caregiver burden. The composition of the gut microbiome has been shown to play a role in the onset of neurological disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD). A small variety of recent research articles identify a possible link between onset and severity of ASD related behaviors and the composition of the gut microbiome. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a rare demyelinating disease characterized by inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. The rapidly progressive inflammation in the central nervous system is known to occur in response to a prior infection or immunization.

The clinical signs of ADEM may manifest up to 60 days post illness or vaccination. Some develop encephalopathy and neurologic symptoms which include confusion, psychosis, and tetraparesis. Paresthesia of the limbs and muscular atrophy indicate a worse prognosis and higher risk of relapse as opposed to those with only CNS involvement. A predominantly psychiatric presentation is also possible.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a degenerative brain disease caused by β Amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, which results in memory loss and cognitive decline. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Approximately 50% of those with AD experience some degree of depression during the course of the disease, which has been shown to accelerate functional decline, institutionalization, and even mortality.
