Ensuring The Health And Well-Being Of Children After Adoption, The Rees-Jones Center For Foster Care Excellence

White Papers and Policy Briefs

Children in foster care have higher rates of health concerns and healthcare utilization than their peers who have not experienced foster care. For example, one study found that children in foster care had 2.5- and 2.3-times higher odds of having a mental health diagnosis and developmental disability diagnosis, respectively. Data on our patient population supports these findings, revealing that 70.4% of our patients had chronic or complex chronic health conditions.

Social Needs Screening And Intervention In Pediatric Primary Care: Impact On Families’ Experience Of Care, Sarah D. Ronis, Marie Masotya, Kurt C. Stange

Faculty Scholarship

Introduction/Objectives: Social determinants of health (SDoH) screening and intervention in pediatric primary care depends upon caregiver disclosure of adverse household or social conditions and thus may be influenced by perceived bias or stigma. This paper examines to what extent parents’ experience of their child’s medical home is associated with their perceptions of a practice-based social needs intervention. Methods: We conducted a cohort study of data reported by 73 parents of children obtaining care in a medical home with an embedded SDoH navigation program. Using survey data collected in October 2021 and October 2022, we calculated descriptive statistics and non-parametric bivariate …

The Impact Of Stress During Adolescence And The Prevalence Of Pediatric Obesity, Olatunbosun Olakunri, Venkat Venkataraman

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Obesity is a chronic condition that can be attributed to myriad factors including socioeconomic status, biological risk factors, and various environmental factors. These factors can be considered stress factors, and exposure to various levels of stress can impact the development of stress within the pediatric patients. The purpose of this study is to assess the association between the environmental, mental, social, physical, and psychological stress adolescents are exposed to and how they contribute to the prevalence of pediatric obesity throughout the United States. Understanding these risk factors can help us as a community and most importantly as clinicians develop better …

After the first session, Alison changed` from being very unhappy and seemingly frustrated to being happy and more calm. Within one month of weekly sessions, Alison was able to be on her tummy, began to crawl, became more agile in seated play, was squatting and standing and took her first steps.

Incorporating Sexual And Gender Minority Patient Care Competencies: A Case Based Curriculum For Caring For Gender Diverse Youth, Eileen Cichoskikelly, Suzanne Kingery, Susan Sawning Jun 2023

Incorporating Sexual And Gender Minority Patient Care Competencies: A Case Based Curriculum For Caring For Gender Diverse Youth, Eileen Cichoskikelly, Suzanne Kingery, Susan Sawning

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

There is a gap in medical education training content specifically focused on the care of Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) people and people with Differences in Sex Development (DSD). Inadequate training contributes to suboptimal health care access, utilization, and experiences among SGM-DSD people. Improving medical education training can be challenging as many clinician educators received sparse instruction themselves in these areas and there are limited teaching resources that expand beyond didactic instruction. In 2014 the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Advisory Committee on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Sex Development published a landmark document identifying 30 specifiers of competence …

BACKGROUND: Pulse oximeters are not routinely available in outpatient clinics in low- and middle-income countries. We derived clinical scores to identify hypoxemic child pneumonia.

METHODS: This was a retrospective pooled analysis of two outpatient datasets of 3-35 month olds with World Health Organization (WHO)-defined pneumonia in Bangladesh and Malawi. We constructed, internally validated, and compared fit & discrimination of four models predicting SpO

RESULTS: 12,712 observations were included. The independent and composite LASSO models discriminated moderately (both C-statistic 0.77) between children with a SpO

CONCLUSIONS: In the absence of pulse oximeters, both LASSO models better identified outpatient hypoxemic pneumonia cases …

Conditions That Mimic Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In A Pediatric Population: A Diagnostic Guide For Primary Care Providers, Elena Schatell Jan 2022

Conditions That Mimic Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In A Pediatric Population: A Diagnostic Guide For Primary Care Providers, Elena Schatell

Capstone Showcase

This article outlines common neurobiological, developmental, psychological, and other medical diagnoses and conditions that symptomatically mimic attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the pediatric population. Many of these disorders are comorbid with ADHD, but they may also be misdiagnosed as ADHD. Due to the similarity in presentation, these conditions must be included when formulating a differential diagnosis. Accurately diagnosing a child with ADHD requires a thorough evaluation and work up to rule out diagnoses on the differential.

Treatment Anxiety Education For Pediatric Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Patients, An Evidence Based Project, Mary Nagel

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Abstract

Background

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect and affects almost 1% of all live births. Treatment anxiety is common among children with CHD who undergo multiple procedures early in their lifetime. Dramatically increased life spans for this cardiac population has led to a shift from focusing on survival to their long-term health outcomes.

Methods:

Administration of the Peds QL Cardiac Module 3.0 assesses health related quality of life (HRQOL) during annual visits to a Cardiac Neurodevelopmental (ND) Clinic by evaluating the level of Treatment Anxiety a patient experiences during healthcare appointments. The questionnaire scores are …

Transitioning From Foster Care To Adulthood: Supporting Adolescents And Young Adults, The Rees-Jones Center For Foster Care Excellence Jan 2021

Transitioning From Foster Care To Adulthood: Supporting Adolescents And Young Adults, The Rees-Jones Center For Foster Care Excellence

White Papers and Policy Briefs

Children involved in foster care have significant trauma histories and have often experienced substantial neglect and/or abuse. Such adverse childhood experiences can lead to cumulative toxic stress, which if not buffered by support and a consistent adult caregiver, can negatively impact physical, mental and socio-emotional development. Such experiences can also result in a lack of trust in adults and systems of care, which can further reduce sources of support for children in foster care.

Training Pediatric Primary Care Providers In Behavior Management Strategies, Kate Burger Aug 2018

Training Pediatric Primary Care Providers In Behavior Management Strategies, Kate Burger

Dissertations

Childhood mental health disorders are a significant public health concern in the United States. It is estimated that every year 13 to 20% of children living in the United States experience a mental health disorder (National Research Council and Institute of Medicine, 2009). Despite the clear need for mental health care, less than half (45.6%) of children with one or more emotional, behavioral, or developmental conditions receive treatment from a mental health professional (The National Survey of Children's Health, 2007). There is growing evidence that integrating mental health services into pediatric primary care can result in increased treatment access as …

Trauma Treatment For Children In The Child Welfare System, The Rees-Jones Center For Foster Care Excellence Jan 2018

Trauma Treatment For Children In The Child Welfare System, The Rees-Jones Center For Foster Care Excellence

White Papers and Policy Briefs

Children involved in the child welfare system almost universally have experienced trauma, and many have experienced complex trauma. Research has shown that early intervention, treatment, and positive caregiving can reduce damage to the brain caused by trauma. Children coming into care should be screened to determine their trauma histories and related symptoms. Based on the outcomes of screenings and assessments, trauma-specific, evidence-based treatments or interventions should be provided.

Health Care Transitions For Adolescents And Young Adults With Special Health Care Needs: Where Are We Now?, Nicole Mubanga, Dennis J. Baumgardner, Jessica J. F. Kram Apr 2017

Health Care Transitions For Adolescents And Young Adults With Special Health Care Needs: Where Are We Now?, Nicole Mubanga, Dennis J. Baumgardner, Jessica J. F. Kram

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Eventually, all adolescents must “graduate” from pediatric-oriented to adult-oriented health care. This transition, most often occurring during young adulthood, is especially important for adolescents with special health care needs and involves not only primary care physicians, but also both pediatric and adult subspecialists. Several studies support the benefit of transitional programs for adolescents and young adults with special health care needs. Additionally, the American Academy of Pediatrics named transitional care as one of its top priorities. However, transitional programs have yet to become an established norm among hospitals and providers, specifically outside of children’s hospitals. This topic synopsis aims to …

Addressing The Health And Safety Of Children In Foster Care, The Rees-Jones Center For Foster Care Excellence Jan 2016

Addressing The Health And Safety Of Children In Foster Care, The Rees-Jones Center For Foster Care Excellence

White Papers and Policy Briefs

The Texas foster care system is an integral part of the safety net for the state’s most vulnerable children, and is charged with the daunting task of providing safe homes to thousands of children who are in crisis. Children and youth in foster care still face persistent barriers when they interact with the health system, which blunt the effectiveness of reform initiatives and potentially create lifelong harms for children in the program. Addressing disparities in the areas of physical health, mental health, educational attainment and special health care needs is integral to improving safety, stability and permanency for every child …
