Accessibility Of Nutritious And Healthy Foods To Older Adults, Kristen Wright
Accessibility Of Nutritious And Healthy Foods To Older Adults, Kristen Wright
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Food insecurity rates are high among older adults who have chronic conditions and/or are homebound. These patients have functional limitations, comorbidities limiting their mobility, and often are socially isolated or live alone, all of which impact their ability to access or make healthy meals. As food insecurity rises, so do the health care costs related to inaccessibility to healthy food, involving the increased risk or prevalence of chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. This project aimed to understand the barriers older adults face in accessing and making healthy meals, and to educate health care providers and patients on recognizing …

Barriers To Exercise: Patients With Diabetes In Washington County, Joshua Bruce Taylor
Barriers To Exercise: Patients With Diabetes In Washington County, Joshua Bruce Taylor
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
According to the Vermont Department of Health physical inactivity is one of the three main behaviors that predisposes patients to cancer, heart disease/stroke, lung disease, and type 2 diabetes, which result in over 50 percent of deaths among Vermonters. Washington County has a higher rate of overweight adults than the statewide average, making exercise an important component to healthier living. Barriers to exercise, especially among patients with diabetes, impose serious health ramifications for the residents of Washington County, and avenues must be made available to circumvent these barriers.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) consists of using medications that act on the same receptors as opioids to treat opioid use disorder (OUD). MAT providers require formal training and a DEA waiver in order to prescribe certain medications. Providers were asked to complete a survey about the beliefs, barriers, and motivations surrounding MAT to provide valuable insight into what the future of MAT might look like at a specific nonprofit network of community health centers in upstate New York.
Transportation As A Barrier To Healthcare, Melissa Romero
Transportation As A Barrier To Healthcare, Melissa Romero
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Lack of transportation is large barrier to medical care, particularly in rural areas. Many patients decline medical appointments because they do not have access to a personal vehicle or other transportation resources. Consequences include missed appointments and higher healthcare costs for patients and providers in the future. Solutions will involve educating patients on resources available to them, simplifying access to current programs, introduction of new programs, and the collaboration of public and private entities to provide new services.

Barriers To Preventive Care For The Immigrant Population In Minnesota, Andrew Kenneth Gernand, Dustin Wayne Kingsley, Daleso Yadetta
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Immigrants in Minnesota face several barriers regarding access and use of preventive healthcare services. Current literature indicates a high area of need exists within the immigrant population for the prevention of chronic illness. Language, health literacy, cultural norms, and citizenship all play a role in limiting the use of preventive care. As the number of elderly immigrants increases and the overall immigrant population steadily rises in the United States, it is in the best interest of patients and providers to prevent or reduce the burden of long term diseases like diabetes, cancer, and hypertension. Knowing that barriers are present within …

Minnesota Healthcare Barriers To The Medically Underserved, Ashley C. Hoffmann, Amanda Walters
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Quality medical services and patient oriented satisfaction are important factors in a healthcare setting. Barriers preventing such factors are more prevalent in medically underserved areas (MUAs) ( Brems, Johnson, Warner, & Roberts, 2006 ). The purpose of this study was to identify barriers in the care of patients within Minnesota MUAs. The study was conducted by an online survey emailed to Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistant (MAPA) members, and only members who were currently employed in a Minnesota MUA county had valid data collection. Twelve barriers to healthcare were listed on the survey and required the MAPA members to grade …

Anal Cancer Risk Factor Management Practices And The Barriers And Facilitators Of Addressing Anal Health In The Hiv Primary Care Setting, Crystal Martin Walker
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Background: The incidence of anal cancer is only 1-2 per 100,000 people in the general population, but in people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA), the incidence is far greater by about 80 times. This is a striking disproportion, and it is vital for the healthcare provider and healthcare system to become more attentive to the risk of anal cancer in high-risk populations such as PLWHA. There are a number of modifiable risk factors for anal cancer in PLWHA such as smoking, non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and risky sexual behaviors. The HIV primary care provider (HIV PCP) plays a …
