LGBTQ+ patients are more likely to forgo cervical cancer screening due to common misconceptions/misguidance about who needs screening and increased likelihood to experience emotional and/or physical discomfort during screening visits. This project aims to educate LGBTQ+ patients on cervical cancer screening recommendations and provide them with tools to improve their experiences during screening visits.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Although the HPV vaccine has been proven to be effective and safe, the vaccination rates are significantly less compared to other vaccines. In males, HPV infection may lead to the development of numerous forms of cancer including oropharyngeal, anal and penile cancer, however, the HPV vaccination rate for males is significantly less than it is for females. Pap smear rates are lower than perceived by many primary care providers, and women refuse or miss pap smears for a variety of reasons. This project investigated both reasons for which women miss or refuse pap smears and ways in which physicians can increase pap smear rates, create a more positive environment during the pap smear experience, and more effectively communicate with patients about pap smears. Intervention consisted of an informational flyer about pap smears for female patients.

Vaccination against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is able to protect against 70% of strains causing cervical cancer and and 90% of strains causing genital warts, yet vaccination rates for boys and girls are still well below average vaccination against many other preventable diseases. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is currently the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection in the United States with an estimated 79 million people infected. In the state of Connecticut, HPV vaccination is not required for entrance into the 9th grade and because of this, there is less awareness of the importance of HPV prevention and immunization among high school students. As of 2013, 37.7-49.9% of females ages 13-17 living in Connecticut completed the HPV vaccine regimen. My objective for this project was to promote awareness about HPV infection and HPV vaccination among high school students.
