Integrative Medicine In Health And Well-Being, Andrew Newberg, Madeline Becker

Department of Family & Community Medicine Presentations and Grand Rounds

For integrative approaches to become part of standard care, research is required to understand clinical effects. Clinical data needs to be supplemented by mechanistic studies. Integrative medicine and general medicine have multiple areas of intersection. Studies can evaluate mental and physical disorders such as depression or anxiety or chronic pain and fatigue. Studies can evaluate psychological symptoms associated with other medical and neurological disorders. It is important to establish efficacy and also mechanism. Future collaborations are very welcome!

Feasibility Pilot Outcomes Of A Mammography Decision Support And Navigation Intervention For Women With Serious Mental Illness Living In Supportive Housing Settings., Lara Weinstein, Marianna Lanoue, Katelyn Hurley, Colleen Payton, Randa Sifri, Ronald Myers

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

Objective: People with serious mental illness (SMI) experience significant disparities in morbidity and mortality from preventable and treatable medical conditions. Women with SMI have low mammography screening rates. SMI, poverty, and poor access to care can have a significant effect on a woman’s opportunity to learn about and discuss breast cancer screening with health care providers. This study examines the feasibility pilot outcomes of mammography decision support and patient navigation intervention (DSNI) for women with SMI living in supportive housing settings. The primary research question was: Does the DSNI increase knowledge, promote favorable attitudes, and decrease decisional conflict relating to …

Primary Care Providers' Attitudes And Practices Regarding Cancer Screening In Older Adults., Randa Sifri, Brooke Salzman, Amy Cunningham, Alexis Silverio, Madalene Zale, Christine Talerico

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

Introduction: Cancer-screening decisions for older adults should be individualized. However, conducting such complex shared decisions may be challenging for primary care providers (PCPs). Additionally, there is little information on how PCPs make these decisions. This study consisted of a provider survey and chart review to assess current PCP approaches to breast and colorectal cancer (CRC) screening with patients age ≥75.

Methods: PCP survey questions: panel age, comfort with discussion of screening harms and benefits, screening decision-making process, and discussion style. One Hundred charts were chosen from a random sample of male and female patients ≥75 with a recent office …

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, nonadherence to seasonal influenza vaccination guidelines for children and adolescents is common and results in unnecessary morbidity and mortality. We conducted a quality improvement project to improve vaccination rates and test effects of 2 interventions on vaccination guidelines adherence.

METHODS: We conducted a cluster randomized control trial with 11 primary care practices (PRACTICE) that provided care for 11 293 individual children and adolescents in a children's health care system from September 2015 through April 2016. Practice sites (with their clinicians) were randomly assigned to 4 arms (no intervention [Control], computerized clinical decision support system [CCDSS], …

Compliance For Latent Tuberculosis Infection Treatment Among Incoming Refugees At Jefferson Center For Refugee Health, Elizabeth Bates, Marc Altshuler, Md, Kevin Scott, Md

CwiC-PH

80% of active TB cases in the US originate from reactivation of Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI), identifying treatment of LTBI as a public health imperative. All incoming refugees at the Jefferson Center for Refugee Health (JCRH) are screened for LTBI upon arrival. Incidence of LTBI and compliance rates were assessed using a retrospective chart review and analysis of prescription refill records. The study showed 23.1% of incoming refugees were diagnosed with LTBI. Once treatment was initiated, only 33.1% were completed, while 56.2% were lost to follow up. Nepali women showed the highest rates of adherence, while Iraqi women and Burmese …
