Fresh Fruits And Vegetables Really Do Keep The Doctor Away: Symptomatic Vitamin Deficiency In A Middle Aged Man, Matthew J. Turnquist Md, Christina Holt Md, Msc

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Introduction

We present a clinical case of symptomatic vitamin deficiency typically seen only in resource limited environments or alcoholics, presenting in an adult male with frequent oral intake, but limited diet of prepared foods, as well as co-occurring pernicious anemia.

Clinical Findings

The patient presented with complaints of ascending paresthesia leading to near syncope, lower extremity edema and hyperpigmentation on his anterior legs bilaterally which had been present for years.

Diagnosis and interventions

He was found to have mixed B12, thiamine, and folate deficiency. These were attributed to a combination of nutritional deficiency due to a diet of exclusively cooked …

Hpv Immunization Intervention Application In Rural Arkansas, Randi M. Wright Jan 2020

Hpv Immunization Intervention Application In Rural Arkansas, Randi M. Wright

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) contracted with over 33,000 cases of cancer attributable to the virus in the United States. The socioeconomical impact of HPV can be combatted with the HPV vaccine which is almost 100 percent successful in preventing infection. A strong provider recommendation is the most effective way to increase HPV vaccination. A private clinic in Arkansas with a total of 13 employees were provided HPV vaccination education. A survey was provided to evaluate knowledge on the topic prior to the presentation. An intervention bundle including 9 changes to vaccination procedures was …

The Effect Of A Sun Damage Simulation Photography App On The Skin-Protective Behavior Intentions Of Women With Children Age 18 Or Younger, James Bowlds Jan 2020

The Effect Of A Sun Damage Simulation Photography App On The Skin-Protective Behavior Intentions Of Women With Children Age 18 Or Younger, James Bowlds

DNP Projects

Abstract

Background: Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in the U.S. annually, despite being a largely preventable disease through the limitation of ultraviolet radiation exposure. Attempts to decrease its incidence have focused on appearance-based interventions. These have been effective at improving sun-protective behaviors among various subpopulations including people of color. Anecdotal observations suggest mothers more frequently utilize sun protection for their children than on themselves.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to gain an understanding of the sun protection practices and beliefs of Caucasian and African American mothers, to assess the response to an appearance-based …

Diabetes Risk Status And Physical Activity In Pregnant Women: U.S. Brfss 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, Bethany Rand Jan 2020

Diabetes Risk Status And Physical Activity In Pregnant Women: U.S. Brfss 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, Bethany Rand

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Objective: We sought to examine differences in aerobic activity (AA) and muscle-strengthening activity (MSA) by diabetes risk status (DRS) among pregnant women in the United States.

Background: Pregnant women without complications are advised to engage in physical activity (PA) to mitigate adverse outcomes. Differences may exist among pregnant women of diverging diabetes status in meeting national PA recommendations.

Methods: The sample (n=9,597) included pregnant women ages 18-44, who participated in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Levels of DRS were: no diabetes (ND), high risk for diabetes (HRD) due to self-reported gestational diabetes or …

Comparative And Cost Benefit Analysis: Vancomycin Versus Ancef In Total Knee Arthroplasties, Zelda Epperson Jan 2020

Comparative And Cost Benefit Analysis: Vancomycin Versus Ancef In Total Knee Arthroplasties, Zelda Epperson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the definitive treatment for degenerative joint disease of the knee. Total joint infections, although low, are a complication that can be a massive expenditure on health care systems and patients. Economic costs have the potential of being high for this procedure. It is estimated to treat these TKA infections, primarily methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) to be between $68,000 and $107,000. The purpose of this retrospective study is to determine whether vancomycin has greater cost benefits and efficacy in reducing post-operative infection rate of total knee arthroplasties than does cefazolin.
