Penicillin: The Burdensome Physiology Of Β-Lactamase, Lena Uyen-Thi Ngo
University Honors Theses
This thesis is a literature review investigating the effects of overusing penicillin and the nonadherence to proper treatment on the evolutionary changes in a bacterium's resistance. Drawing upon the history, present, and future of penicillin research, the examination analyzes how penicillin came to be, how bacteria developed their resistance, and how scientists are combating this issue. In doing so, the study investigates the historical timeline regarding the discovery of penicillin as an antibiotic. Furthermore, the review will examine the scientific changes within a bacterium's physiology to develop its antibiotic resistance. Finally, the review will delve into what scientists are currently …

Background: A large portion of preschool-aged children in the United States (US) do not consume enough fruits and vegetables (FV). It is important for childcare providers to know what food choices children in their care are making at mealtime and how to encourage them to eat more FV. The objective of this pilot study was to examine the relationship between FV preference and plate waste among pre-school aged children in a childcare setting using a rapid assessment tool.
Methods: The rapid assessment tool was first pilot tested with 23 children and revised. A repeated cross-sectional design was carried out for …

Objective: A significant number of parents delay or refuse vaccinating their children. Incidental exposure to vaccine information (i.e., scanned information) may be an important contributor to anti-vaccine sentiment. This study examines the association between scanned information, trust in health information sources and vaccine safety concerns among African American, Mexican American, and non-Hispanic White women.
Methods: Women (N=761) in Los Angeles County were sampled via random digit dial and surveyed regarding use of and trust in health information resources and vaccine safety concerns.
Results: Analyses indicate that the sources of information associated with vaccine safety concerns varied by …

Background Insecticide–treated bednets are effective at preventing malaria. This study focuses on household–level factors that are associated with bednet ownership in a rural area of Madagascar which had not been a recipient of large–scale ITN distribution.
Methods Data were gathered on individual and household characteristics, malaria knowledge, household assets and bednet ownership. Principal components analysis was used to construct both a wealth index based on household assets and a malaria knowledge index based on responses to questions about malaria. Bivariate and multivariate regressions were used to determine predictors of household bednet ownership and malaria knowledge.
Results Forty–seven of 560 households …
The Evaluation Of Rectal Bleeding In Adults, Elizabeth Allen, Christina Nicolaidis, Mark Helfand
The Evaluation Of Rectal Bleeding In Adults, Elizabeth Allen, Christina Nicolaidis, Mark Helfand

Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in this country.5 The majority of medical societies recommend some form of colon cancer screening for asymptomatic adult patients over age 50. The evaluation of rectal bleeding is different from screening because the risk of serious disease is higher and it is unclear whether early diagnosis and treatment of serious disease results in improved mortality once gross bleeding has occurred. The optimal evaluation strategy for rectal bleeding is unknown. Neither historical information nor the presence or absence of hemorrhoids has been shown to reliably differentiate benign from serious disease.6–11 Fecal …
