Introduction: Port-wine stains are congenital capillary malformations that may occur in isolation or with underlying vascular and musculoskeletal abnormalities in various syndromes. Chronic ulceration and inflammatory skin changes may complicate diagnosis and management, particularly when atypical ulcer morphology is present.

Aim: To describe complex lower extremity ulceration and inflammatory skin disease in a patient with a large congenital port-wine stain and associated limb abnormalities.

Case Presentation: A 52-year-old White male with a congenital port-wine stain involving the lateral left lower extremity from the hip to the foot was evaluated for recurrent ulceration and progressive inflammatory skin changes. Associated findings included …

“Limb salvage” efforts, such as performing minor amputations before infections spread proximally from the foot to decrease major lower extremity amputation, are an important part of healthcare today. It is unclear whether these efforts are preventing the number of major amputations and improving patients’ quality of life and the cost-effectiveness of the U.S. healthcare system. Rates of non-traumatic lower extremity amputation (NLEA) among patients with diabetes decreased in the early 2000s but rebounded in the 2010s. We analyzed the proportion of major amputations and differences in amputation rates between age groups in Texas. Patient data was extracted from the Texas …

Mönckeberg's Medial Calcific Sclerosis In Diabetic And Non-Diabetic Foot Infections, Mehmet A. Suludere, Amanda L. Killeen, Peter A. Crisologo, Gu E. Kang, Matthew Malone, Michael C. Siah, Lawrence A. Lavery Aug 2023

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and extent of lower extremity Mönckeberg's Medial Calcific Sclerosis (MMCS) in patients with and without diabetes in patients admitted to the hospital for foot infections. This study retrospectively reviewed 446 patients admitted to the hospital with a moderate or severe foot infection. We defined diabetes based on ADA criteria and reviewed electronic medical records for demographics, medical history and physical examination data. Anterior–posterior and lateral foot radiographs were examined to identify the presence and extent of vascular calcification. We categorised MMCS based on anatomical location: ankle joint to the navicular-cuneiform …

Review Of Orthoplastic Techniques For Lower Extremity Reconstruction: Part One, Benjamin Heddy, Brady Webb Mar 2023

Review Of Orthoplastic Techniques For Lower Extremity Reconstruction: Part One, Benjamin Heddy, Brady Webb

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

Orthoplastic techniques are effective tools for limb salvage in the lower extremity. In order to apply proper techniques successfully, a surgeon must be aware of all the different types of flaps available. Proper pre-operative evaluation and patient selection are also important factors. The following review covers six papers that give surgeons a strong foundation in the anatomical basis and surgical technique of intrinsic muscle flaps and other fasciocutaneous or adipofascial flaps of the foot. These flaps, along with split thickness skin grafts, external fixation, and dermal regenerative templates, quickly close soft tissue deficits in the foot and ankle that often …

The Influence Of Shoe And Cleat Type On Lower Extremity Muscle Activation In Youth Baseball Pitchers, Jacob R. Gdovin, Chip Wade, Lauren A. Luginsland, Charles C. Williams, Riley Galloway, John C. Garner Jan 2022

The Influence Of Shoe And Cleat Type On Lower Extremity Muscle Activation In Youth Baseball Pitchers, Jacob R. Gdovin, Chip Wade, Lauren A. Luginsland, Charles C. Williams, Riley Galloway, John C. Garner

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

Background: Baseball pitching is a dynamic movement where the lower extremities generate and sequentially transfer energy to the upper extremities to maximize ball velocity. The need for lower body muscular strength to produce adequate push-off and landing forces has been documented; however, the influence footwear and surface inclination has on muscle activation remains unknown.

Objectives: Determine how pitching in molded cleats and turf shoes from a pitching mound and flat ground affects stride-leg muscle activation in youth baseball pitchers while determining percent activation during each pitching phase.

Methods: Cross – sectional study analyzing mean muscle activity and percent activation of …
