Mis Calcaneal Fracture Repair: A Literature Review, Nehal Modha, Roshni Patel, Warren Windram
Mis Calcaneal Fracture Repair: A Literature Review, Nehal Modha, Roshni Patel, Warren Windram
East Florida Division GME Research Day 2023
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has gained prominence as a viable approach for the management of calcaneal fractures, offering the potential for reduced soft tissue trauma, enhanced visualization, and expedited recovery. This literature review aims to comprehensively analyze the existing body of research on MIS techniques employed in the repair of calcaneal fractures.
A comprehensive literature review was completed by the authors using Google Scholar, Pubmed, Cochrane Review, and Science Direct using a combination of phrases related to the title of this article that focused on MIS interventions for calcaneal fractures. The review encompassed studies from the last decade, evaluating surgical …
Energy Cost Of Walking In Diabetic Partial-Foot Amputees As Related To Amputation Level, Nicholas Obias, Javier La Fontaine, Javier Cavazos, Luis Venegas, Hafizur Rahman
Energy Cost Of Walking In Diabetic Partial-Foot Amputees As Related To Amputation Level, Nicholas Obias, Javier La Fontaine, Javier Cavazos, Luis Venegas, Hafizur Rahman
School of Podiatric Medicine - Student Research
This review will explore how the energy cost of walking changes with different levels of partial-foot amputation in diabetic patients. Patient populations with advanced stages of diabetes and associated complications have a high incidence of distal lower extremity amputation. Diabetes associated conditions and altered foot function in post-amputation patients affect gait biomechanics and energy expenditure in gait. We will review studies utilizing advanced biomechanical tools to quantify and compare energy expenditure (defined as cardiac function and oxygen consumption) in established post-operative partial-foot amputees at various levels (post-operative day >90*) to controls. Dr. Rahman and his team aim to provide further …

BACKGROUND: Along with significant case transmission, hospitalizations, and mortality experienced during the global severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic, there existed a disruption in the delivery of health care across multiple specialties. We studied the effect of the pandemic on inpatients with diabetic foot problems in a Level I trauma center in central Ohio.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients necessitating a consultation by the foot and ankle surgery service were reviewed from the first 8 months of 2020. A total of 270 patients met the inclusion criteria and were divided into prepandemic (n = 120) and pandemic …
Challenging The Endovascular Era: Open Bypass From Distal Sfa To Pta Using Ipsilateral Reversed Saphenous Vein For Critical Limb Ischemia, Suraj Pai, Suresh Pai, Sanya Mukhida, Aditya Nair
Challenging The Endovascular Era: Open Bypass From Distal Sfa To Pta Using Ipsilateral Reversed Saphenous Vein For Critical Limb Ischemia, Suraj Pai, Suresh Pai, Sanya Mukhida, Aditya Nair
Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences
Open surgical revascularization remains a vital option in select patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI), especially when endovascular interventions are not feasible. We present a case of a 69 -year-old diabetic male with Rutherford class 5 CLI, initially planned for above-knee amputation due to extensive arterial occlusion and severe rest pain. The disease was attributed to his very significant smoking history which was stopped only recently. His CT Angiogram study revealed occlusion of distal superficial femoral artery with suboptimal distal reformation. Given the absence of endovascular options, he underwent successful open bypass from the distal superficial femoral artery (SFA) to …

Background: Electrical stimulation (E-Stim) may offer a unique adjunctive treatment to heal complicated diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). Our primary goal is to examine the effectiveness of daily home-based E-Stim therapy to speed-up wound healing.
Methods: Patients with chronic DFUs and mild to severe peripheral arterial disease (PAD) were recruited and randomized to either control (CG) or intervention (IG) groups. The IG received 1-hour home-based E-Stim therapy on daily basis for 4 weeks (4W). E-Stim was delivered through electrical pads placed above the ankle joint using a bio-electric stimulation technology (BEST®) platform (Tennant Biomodulator® PRO). The CG was provided with an …

Background: A critical factor in healing diabetic foot ulcers is patient adherence to offloading devices. We tested a smart offloading boot (SmartBoot) combined with a smartwatch app and cloud dashboard to remotely monitor patient adherence and activity. In addition, the impact of SmartBoot on balance, gait, and user experience was investigated.
Methods: Fourteen volunteers (31.6±8.7 years; 64% female) performed natural activities (eg, sitting, standing, walking) with and without the SmartBoot for approximately 30 minutes. All participants completed balance tests, 10-meter walking tests at slow, normal, and fast pace while wearing the SmartBoot, and a user experience questionnaire. The accuracy of …
