Sex, Race, And Primary Language On Opioid Prescribing In Pediatrics, Lubna Begum, Brian Begley, Catherine Cerniglia, Mones Aboeletta, Grace Gilbert, Justin Matthew, Stephen Meixner, Corinna Franklin, Rey Ramirez

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Over-prescription of pain medication has led to an opioid epidemic in the United States. Many factors can contribute to the amount of pain medication prescribed to patients. The amount of pain medication prescribed to patients is affected by many factors and previous research has shown:

  • Men are prescribed more than women
  • Whites more than non-whites
  • English-speaking more than non-English-speaking

The goal of the study was to look at whether this held true in a pediatric orthopedic population. We also looked at the trends in opiate prescribing over time.

The Influence Of Parental Knowledge Of Nutrition Labels On Child Bmi, Daniella R. Toto, Alexander Kowalski May 2022

The Influence Of Parental Knowledge Of Nutrition Labels On Child Bmi, Daniella R. Toto, Alexander Kowalski

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

The purpose of this study is to better understand parental knowledge of nutrition labels and how this knowledge affects their child’s BMI. A large proportion of US parents have limited health literacy skills on how to read and use labels. Socioeconomic status and other demographics may affect this knowledge. We predict that children of parents who lack nutrition label knowledge will have higher BMIs than children whose parents have nutrition label knowledge.

The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Pediatric Obesity In School-Aged Children, Amaani Faizal, Maryanna Schweininger, Suzanna Hosein May 2022

The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Pediatric Obesity In School-Aged Children, Amaani Faizal, Maryanna Schweininger, Suzanna Hosein

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

The prevalence of childhood obesity in those aged 2-19 in the United States was 19.3% in 2017-2018. Childhood obesity is a major health concern with growing rates of incidence. Being overweight or obese put children at risk for developing several chronic conditions such as coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and asthma at a younger age. Studies have shown that higher BMI numbers in childhood added an increased risk of being obese as an adult.

The pathophysiology of developing obesity includes several complex factors ranging from nutrition, physical activity, genetic background and lifestyle preferences. Among children, nutrition and …

The Impact On Adolescent Mental Health In South Jersey Due To The Cancelation And Return Of Sports, Tara Pellegrino, Tara Young May 2022

The Impact On Adolescent Mental Health In South Jersey Due To The Cancelation And Return Of Sports, Tara Pellegrino, Tara Young

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many organized sports programs have been canceled or limited in participation. While research prior to the pandemic has strongly suggested that participation in organized sports has benefits for mental and physical health, especially in adolescence, there have been minimal studies on how the removal of organized sports affects mental health outcomes. Additionally, studies have found that the stress of the pandemic and its associated life changes has greatly decreased mental health outcomes in our target population. These findings may indicate the importance of return to organized sports in a time where mental health outcomes are …

Case Report: Unintentional Edible Thc Ingestion (Gummi Worms) In A Child, James Espinosa, Kelly Hamilton, Alan Lucerna, David Ho, Henry Schuitema

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

We report the case of a 4 year male who presented to the ED with what his mother described as unusual fatigue and sleepiness. The mother related that family and friends had some to her house for a holiday gathering and that one of the guests had an accessible and open handbag that contained gummi worm THC. The guest observed the child eating the gummi worms and immediately notified the patient’s mother. Poison control was contacted. The child was observed for 6 hours and left the ED in good condition without any specific treatment needed. Awareness of the potential of …

Adverse Effects Associated With Diazoxide Use In Neonates, Zoe Begun, Evan Graber, Krystal Hunter, Alla Kushnir Apr 2022

Adverse Effects Associated With Diazoxide Use In Neonates, Zoe Begun, Evan Graber, Krystal Hunter, Alla Kushnir

Cooper Rowan Medical Journal

Abstract

Introduction: Diazoxide is the first-line treatment used to manage infants and children with hypoglycemia secondary to hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia (HH), after initial stabilization of blood glucose. Recent changes in Pediatric Endocrine Society guidelines regarding definition of, and screening for hypoglycemia in the neonate led to an increase in the number of infants treated with diazoxide. Previous studies have noted various side effects of diazoxide. With the increased use of this drug in neonates, our aim is to further evaluate these side effects.

Methods: We performed a retrospective case control analysis of all neonates admitted to a tertiary care center in …

Knowledge, Attitudes, And Beliefs About Safe Sleep Among Preconception Adolescents, Keita Oumou, Krystal Hunter, Erica Levin, Lori Feldman-Winter Oct 2021

Knowledge, Attitudes, And Beliefs About Safe Sleep Among Preconception Adolescents, Keita Oumou, Krystal Hunter, Erica Levin, Lori Feldman-Winter

Cooper Rowan Medical Journal

Introduction–To protect against SUID/SIDS, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released recommendations on creating a safe sleep environment. Studies about teen parents indicate gaps in knowledge regarding infant safe sleep practices, however there are no published studies about adolescents who are preconception. The objective of this stud is to investigate adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs regarding infant safe sleep practices prior to conceiving.

Methods–This was a cross-sectional study of adolescents aged 14-22 years recruited from two outpatient primary care pediatric sites in Southern NJ. Following consent, participants completed a 27-question survey about infant safe sleep practices. For analysis, …

Alteplase Used In A Child With An Acute Ischemic Stroke, Shah Nawaz Chaudhary, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna, Adam Richards May 2021

Alteplase Used In A Child With An Acute Ischemic Stroke, Shah Nawaz Chaudhary, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna, Adam Richards

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Stroke, also known as cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is a neurological injury caused by inadequate brain perfusion due to either ischemia or hemorrhage. There is an abundance of literature on the management of ischemic strokes in adults and this has led to well-defined diagnostic and treatment guidelines. However, the management of pediatric ischemic strokes is currently based on clinical experience of experts, recommendations of consensus guidelines, case studies and extrapolation from adult clinical trials. In this case report, a pediatric patient suffering from an ischemic stroke is successfully treated with IV alteplase (tPA).

The Measurement Of Strength In Children: Is The Peak Value Truly Maximal?, H. Ozake, T. Abe, Scott J. Dankel, J. P. Loenneke, T. Natsume, P. Deng, H. Naito Dec 2020

The Measurement Of Strength In Children: Is The Peak Value Truly Maximal?, H. Ozake, T. Abe, Scott J. Dankel, J. P. Loenneke, T. Natsume, P. Deng, H. Naito

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

It is unclear whether the measurement of maximum muscle strength in younger children can be performed accurately due to factors such as motivation and maturity (i.e., the ability to receive instruction). If there is a large change in a ratio between muscular strength and size from the youngest to the oldest, then this might provide some indication that the youngest may not have been able to voluntarily activate their muscles for reasons mentioned previously. The purpose of this study was to observe the ratio between handgrip strength (HGS) and forearm muscle thickness (MT) across differing ages in younger children. A …

This article will focus on the application of TF-CBT to young children. After presenting an overview of the model, challenges and developmentally-sensitive and creative strategies for engaging young children and their caregivers in TF-CBT PRACTICE components will be highlighted. A brief review of the strong empirical support for TF-CBT will then be provided.

Early Oral-Motor Interventions For Pediatric Feeding Problems: What, When And How, C. J. Manno, C. Fox, P. S. Eicher, Mary Louise Kerwin Jan 2005

Early Oral-Motor Interventions For Pediatric Feeding Problems: What, When And How, C. J. Manno, C. Fox, P. S. Eicher, Mary Louise Kerwin

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Children with developmental delays often have feeding difficulties resulting from oral-motor problems. Based on both clinical experience and a review of published studies, oral-motor interventions have been shown to be effective in improving the oral function of preterm infants and children with neuromotor disorders, such as cerebral palsy. However, oral-motor problems may be under identified in other populations of children with developmental difficulties. The purpose of this paper is to provide a conceptual framework for understanding oral-motor skill development and problems that can occur in any infant and young child and to review oral-motor treatment techniques and their empirical support.

Behavioral Intervention And Prevention Of Feeding Difficulties In Infants And Toddlers, Mary Louise Kerwin, P. S. Eicher Jan 2004

Behavioral Intervention And Prevention Of Feeding Difficulties In Infants And Toddlers, Mary Louise Kerwin, P. S. Eicher

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Although eating is considered an automatic physiologic process, many children experience feeding difficulties. The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework for assessment, treatment and prevention of feeding difficulties in children. Identification and treatment of any factors actively interfering with feeding success is a critical cornerstone for effective behavioral interventions for feeding. Using variables that comprise the structure of a meal, this paper discusses how these variables might be manipulated in behavioral interventions for feeding problems. Recommendations for prevention of feeding problems are also presented.
