Endocarditis Caused By Candida (Candidozyma) Auris, Farah Ebrahim, Mzee Ngunga, Abdulaziz Abeid, Hilda Nasibwa, Newnex Mongare, Rodney Adam

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Candida (Candidozyma) auris has emerged as a hospital-acquired pathogen and was first reported in East Asia in 2009. Infective endocarditis due to C. auris has been rarely reported, while other Candida species account for < 2% of infective endocarditis (IE) cases. Herein we report three cases of endocarditis caused by C. auris , including a native aortic valve, a native tricuspid valve, and a prosthetic valve. Each of these cases had been in healthcare settings months to years earlier that were the likely sources of their infec- tions. These cases suggest the possibility for indolent but life-threatening infections from C. auris . ©2026 The Authors. Hiding In Plain Sight: A Case Of Intestinal Tuberculosis Masquerading As Benign Lower Gi Bleeding, Lavender Otom, Priyanka Panwar, Gerald Odong, Fatma Kassim, Patricia Okiro, Christopher Opio, Saleem Abdulkarim

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Background Intestinal tuberculosis (TB) represents the most common form of abdominal TB, often affecting the ileocaecal region. Lower gastrointestinal bleeding is an uncommon presentation and may create significant diagnostic uncertainty, particularly in immunocompromised patients and in settings where inflammatory bowel disease is also encountered.

Case Presentation A woman in her sixties from Africa presented with recurrent diarrhoea and intermittent haematochezia over a 6-month period. Initial endoscopic evaluation was nondiagnostic. Cross-sectional imaging later demonstrated multifocal bowel involvement affecting both the small and large bowel, including ileocaecal and rectoanal disease, with associated abdominopelvic lymphadenopathy. Histopathology from repeat colonoscopy biopsy showed caseating granulomas …

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction Autologous stem cell transplantation followed by maintenance with Lenalidomide has improved the overall survival and progression free survival in patients with Multiple Myeloma. However, maintenance therapy with Lenalidomide can increase the risk of several hematological adverse events including secondary B cell lymphoblastic leukemia. We present a case of 61 year old female who was previously treated for multiple myeloma and on maintenance Lenalidomide developed B lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma. Case presentation A 61 year old female initially presented with left sided hip pain and lower back pain in 2018.Chest X ray revealed mass like opacity in the left upper lobe and …

Cancer Of Unknown Primary With Squamous Cell Carcinoma Phenotype Presenting As Isolated Axillary Mass, Nicole Liang, Mohamed Ashal, Lynne J. Goebel

Internal Medicine

Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) is a rare metastatic malignancy where no primary tumor can be found. We report the case of a 71-year-old female with a strong family history of breast cancer presenting with isolated axillary lymphadenopathy after a tick bite. A biopsy of the axillary mass revealed poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and after extensive evaluation, she was diagnosed with metastatic squamous cell carcinoma with unknown primary tumor. We present this case because of the role of confounding history complicating her initial diagnosis and bringing awareness to a rare disease.

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

This study investigated the lived experiences of individuals living with HIV (PLWH) in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area of Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic, using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) framework. The research examined the intersection of health, social dynamics, and psychological resilience among PLWH, who faced compounded vulnerabilities due to systemic inequities and the dual public health crises of HIV and COVID-19. Through semi-structured interviews with ten participants from diverse backgrounds, the study captured the profound impacts of disrupted healthcare systems, heightened stigma, and social isolation on this marginalized population. The findings reveal that the pandemic exacerbated existing inequities …

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction: Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma is a rare group of benign pulmonary neoplasms that usually affects older adults over 50 years of age . This neoplasm is more commonly seen in women, with female to male ratio of 5:1 and is predominantly seen in Asian ethnicities. These tumors originate from type II alveolar pneumocytes and are hence classified as adenoma under the 2021 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of tumors . They account for 3-5 percent of total benign lung tumors. One of the striking aspects of PSP is its clinical presentation, or rather the lack thereof in many cases. It …

Case Of Rosai Dorfman Disease In A Patient With Newly Diagnosed Hodgkin Lymphoma, Liza Salloum, Jennifer Rojas Huen, Ricardo Serna, Alisha Valdez

Research Symposium

Background: Rosai Dorfman Disease (RDD, also known as sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis, classified into nodal (classic) and extranodal disease. Most patients present with non-tender cervical lymphadenopathy, although other sites including the inguinal and axillary regions have been reported. Extranodal disease (~43% of cases) can involve any organ system. RDD is more common in children, but cases have been reported in patients in their 70s. The prognosis of nodal RDD can correlate with the number of nodal groups involved. Many cases can be managed only with observation, although surgery, chemotherapy, corticosteroids, and immunomodulators have …

Abstract

Introduction

Health centers are community-based, patient directed primary care providers that offer accessible, high-quality primary care within medically underserved communities. Screening for cancer and managing complex chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and depression are vital services for the vulnerable populations seen by community health centers. Delivering care for complex chronic conditions and preventive services using virtual models that integrate self-care tools and technology is an important approach to increasing access for hard-to-reach patients served by health centers.

Objective

This study aimed to explore the use of a virtual care model, applied using a systems approach and patient-driven …

Prevalence And Patterns Of Cardiovascular Risk Factors In Young Hypertensive Patients, *Raghu V S R Tanuku Dr., Major Venkata Shree Krishna Dr., Sreedhar Tanuku Dr

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine

Hypertension ranks among the top ten causes of mortality, with around 4% attributed to hypertensive complications. High salt intake, Type 2 diabetes, smoking, elevated serum lipids, a sedentary lifestyle, a diet heavy in saturated fat, genetic predisposition, as well as stress are among the factors that contribute to hypertension. Hypertension affects about 1 billion people worldwide, with considerable differences between populations and ethnic groups [2]. The Framingham Heart Study indicates that a person's lifetime risk of developing hypertension is 90% if they are normotensive at age 55. According to the NHANES IV (4th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), the …

Posters

First line therapy for Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is 7+3 regimen. It often cannot be used in elderly patients due to intensity. Venetoclax + hypomethylating agent (HMA) is approved for AML treatment in these patients. We investigate the efficacy of this treatment in a community setting where patients do not have the same resources available to them as a large academic center. Primary outcome was survival of patients greater than 60 years of age with a diagnosis of AML who received 7+3 therapy versus those who received venetoclax + HMA. Secondary outcomes included characteristics of those who received the two …

An Exceedingly Rare Case Of Bilateral Synchronous Germ Cell Testicular Tumors Of Different Histological Types, Joseph Kim, Ray Page, Gregory Moses, Rod Carlo Columbres

North Texas GME Research Forum 2023

It is exceedingly rare to find a case of bilateral synchronous germ cell testicular tumors of different histological types, and there have been only a handful of cases because of a lack of connections through lymphatic or vascular pathways between the testes. Here we present a unique case of a 43-year-old man who initially presented to the primary care physician for increasing right testicular swelling. He had a testicular sonogram that showed a large right testicular mass as well as a 1.7 cm left testicular mass suspicious of malignancy. Pre-surgical laboratories showed PSA 0.97, alpha-fetoprotein 1875, quantitative hCG 2508, and …

Monitoring Concordance In The Management Of Transfusing Blood Components In Cirrhotic Patients For Paracentesis With Evidence-Based Guidelines, Joseph Kim, Gregory Moses Apr 2023

Monitoring Concordance In The Management Of Transfusing Blood Components In Cirrhotic Patients For Paracentesis With Evidence-Based Guidelines, Joseph Kim, Gregory Moses

North Texas GME Research Forum 2023

Initiative to decrease unnecessary hemostatic agent transfusion in cirrhotic patients undergoing paracentesis: a resident-led approach quality improvement project to prevent transfusion overuse. Currently, there is no official guideline placed in the hospital for the administration of a hemostatic agent such as fresh frozen plasma in the setting of an elevated international normalized ratio, which paradoxically is an anticipated finding in cirrhotic patients. This process leads to unnecessarily prolonging the duration of the hospital course due to delays in performing the interventional procedures and interruptions in scheduling. The goal of this project is to educate and provide physicians with the most …

COVID-19 morbidity and mortality are not equivalent to other etiologies of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) as fulminant activation of coagulation can occur, thereby resulting in widespread microvascular thrombosis and consumption of coagulation factors. A 53-year-old female presented to an emergency center on two occasions with progressive gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms. She was diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia and admitted to a satellite intensive care unit with hypoxemic respiratory failure. She was intubated and mechanically ventilated, but her ARDS progressed over the next 48 hours. The patient was emergently cannulated for veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) and transferred to our …

A Rare Metastatic Primary Rectal Melanoma In A Geriatric Male, Onyinye Ugonabo, Mujtaba Mohamed, Ebubechukwu Ezeh, Joseph Simmons, Jonathan Cuda, Shima Ghavimi

Internal Medicine

Primary rectal melanoma (PRM) is an uncommon malignancy whose etiology remains unknown. Most patients present with rectal bleeding. Distant metastasis is commonly seen in the lung and liver. The incidence rates for locoregional lymph node metastases on initial presentation are almost 60%. Histology and immunochemistry are useful and are the gold standard for diagnosis. The prognosis is very poor due to the late presentation of patients. Optimum surgical treatment remains controversial. Abdominoperineal resection was considered traditionally but over time, has been found to have no survival benefit. Current literature and studies, therefore, recommend wide local excision. The beneficial effects of …

Sclerosing Mesenteritis: A Rare Cause Of Abdominal Pain, Said Sharawi, Vincent A. Graffeo, Lynne J. Goebel

Internal Medicine

Sclerosing mesenteritis (SM) is a rare inflammatory fibrotic disease of the small intestine mesenteric fat often discovered incidentally on a CT scan. Clinical manifestations depend on the mass effect on the viscera and vessels. The most common symptoms are abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea. SM occurs predominantly in Caucasian men, during the fifth to seventh decades of life. We present a 69-year-old woman with SM whose symptoms were thought to be from irritable bowel syndrome. A 69-year-old female with a history of fibromyalgia presented with recurrent bouts of abdominal pain across her mid-abdomen lasting 30 minutes to an hour associated …
