It is estimated that 1 in every 200 US newborns has congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV). Delayed identification of cCMV in newborns precludes timely intervention to mitigate sequelae of the infection such as hearing loss and other neurological complications. Newborn testing for cCMV enables appropriate diagnosis and intervention by multidisciplinary teams to properly manage the immediate sequelae of cCMV, avoid unnecessary additional testing that can result from delayed diagnosis, and monitor for future complications. It is the position of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance, the National CMV Foundation, and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery that universal newborn cCMV screening …

Investigating The Ideal Candidate For The Fda’S Over-The-Counter Hearing Aids, Jamie N. Mayer Jan 2025

Investigating The Ideal Candidate For The Fda’S Over-The-Counter Hearing Aids, Jamie N. Mayer

Capstone Showcase

Hearing loss is an underdiagnosed and undertreated medical condition affecting millions of Americans across a variety of ages and stages of life. Over-the-counter hearing aids are a new category of hearing aids created by the FDA. By targeting affordability and accessibility, over-the-counter hearing aids reduce barriers to care that individuals with hearing loss may face. There is a major impact of hearing loss on adults, specifically, for our elderly population who struggle with communication, staying engaged socially, and the additional stress of comorbid conditions. Elderly adults have the potential to derive immense benefit from over-the-counter hearing aids, specifically for those …

Diagnostic Overshadowing: A Delayed Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In A Deaf Child, Quynh-Chi Dang, Michael Hoffman, Rachel St. John

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Diagnostic overshadowing occurs when a patient with a pre-existing diagnosis presents with symptoms that are attributed to the diagnosis, but actually reflect a separate issue. This diagnostic overshadowing can lead to delays in diagnosis, as well as disparities in health care and outcomes. The following case will provide an example in which diagnostic overshadowing contributed to the delay of an autism diagnosis in a child who is deaf. With at least 40 to 50% of children who are deaf or hard of hearing having at least one co-existing medical/developmental condition, and the current prevalence of autism at 1 in 36 …

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Hearing loss affects more than 430 million people, worldwide, and is the third most common chronic physical condition in the United States and Europe (GBD Hearing Loss Collaborators, 2021; NIOSH, 2021; WHO, 2021). The loss of hearing significantly impacts motor and cognitive development, communication, education, employment, and overall quality of life. The inner ear houses the sensory organs for both hearing and balance and provides an accessible target for therapeutic delivery. Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) use various mechanisms to manipulate gene expression and can be tailor-made to treat disorders with defined genetic targets. In this review, we discuss the preclinical advancements …

Early Functional And Cognitive Declines Measured By Auditory-Evoked Cortical Potentials In Mice With Alzheimer’S Disease, Ling Mei, Li-Man Liu, Kaitian Chen, Hong-Bo Zhao

Otolaryngology--Head & Neck Surgery Faculty Publications

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by a progressive loss of memory and cognitive decline. However, the assessment of AD-associated functional and cognitive changes is still a big challenge. Auditory-evoked cortical potential (AECP) is an event-related potential reflecting not only neural activation in the auditory cortex (AC) but also cognitive activity in the brain. In this study, we used the subdermal needle electrodes with the same electrode setting as the auditory brainstem response (ABR) recording and recorded AECP in normal aging CBA/CaJ mice and APP/PS1 AD mice. AECP in mice usually appeared as three positive peaks, i.e., P1, P2, and P3, …

Otosclerosis: Experience With Stapes Surgery, Muhammad Shaheryar Ahmed Rajput, Asif Ali Arain, Arsalan A. Rajput, Mohammad Adeel, Anwar Suhail, Mohammad Sohail Awan

Section of Ophthalmology

Introduction: Otosclerosis is a disorder in which the footplate of the stapes is replaced by an abnormal bone, thereby affecting sound transmission to the inner ear at the level of the oval window. The solution to this condition is to reestablish this mechanism back to normal via the ossicular chain to the inner ear. The aim of stapes surgery is to improve the hearing level to thresholds appropriate enough to obviate the need for hearing aid. The hearing improvement achieved after surgery often lasts for many years. The purpose of the current study was to review our experience and find …

Expression And Function Of Pannexins In The Inner Ear And Hearing, Hong-Bo Zhao May 2016

Expression And Function Of Pannexins In The Inner Ear And Hearing, Hong-Bo Zhao

Otolaryngology--Head & Neck Surgery Faculty Publications

Pannexin (Panx) is a gene family encoding gap junction proteins in vertebrates. So far, three isoforms (Panx1, 2 and 3) have been identified. All of three Panx isoforms express in the cochlea with distinct expression patterns. Panx1 expresses in the cochlea extensively, including the spiral limbus, the organ of Corti, and the cochlear lateral wall, whereas Panx2 and Panx3 restrict to the basal cells of the stria vascularis in the lateral wall and the cochlear bony structure, respectively. However, there is no pannexin expression in auditory sensory hair cells. Recent studies demonstrated that like connexin gap junction gene, Panx1 deficiency …
