Improving Rural Bone Health And Minimizing Fracture Risk In West Virginia: Validation Of The World Health Organization Frax® Assessment Tool As A Phone Survey For Osteoporosis Detection, Franklin D. Shuler Md, Phd, Kelly Scott Md, Mph, Timothy Wilson-Byrne Md, Miranda R. Morgan, Linda Morgan
Improving Rural Bone Health And Minimizing Fracture Risk In West Virginia: Validation Of The World Health Organization Frax® Assessment Tool As A Phone Survey For Osteoporosis Detection, Franklin D. Shuler Md, Phd, Kelly Scott Md, Mph, Timothy Wilson-Byrne Md, Miranda R. Morgan, Linda Morgan
Orthopaedics
West Virginia ranks second nationally in population ≥ 65 years old placing our state at greater risk for osteoporosis and fracture. The gold standard for detecting osteoporosis is dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), yet over half of West Virginia’s counties do not have this machine. Due to access barriers, a validated phone-administered fracture prediction tool would be beneficial for osteoporosis screening. The World Health Organization’s FRAX® fracture prediction tool was administered as a phone survey to 45 patients; these results were compared to DXA bone mineral density determination. Results confirmed that the FRAX® phone survey is as reliable as DXA in …
Hip Fragility Fractures: Anaemia, Calcium And Vitamin D Supplementation, Iqra Khan, Ambreen Jawaid, Khabir Ahmad, Shahryar Noordin
Hip Fragility Fractures: Anaemia, Calcium And Vitamin D Supplementation, Iqra Khan, Ambreen Jawaid, Khabir Ahmad, Shahryar Noordin
Department of Family Medicine
Objective: To assess the burden of anaemia and osteoporosis in hip fracture patients, to determine the rate of blood transfusion per-operatively, to assess the use of calcium and vitamin D supplements and the use of anti-osteoporotic medications postoperatively.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted at Aga Khan University and Hospital (AKUH) between June 2009 and May 2011, and comprised record of patients treated for intertrochanteric and femur neck fractures. Patients with associated pathological, open or long bone fractures were excluded. The main study outcome measures were the use of pre-operative and post-operative calcium, vitamin D, bisphosphonates and management of anaemia …
Bones Of Contention: Bone Mineral Density Recovery In Celiac Disease—A Systematic Review, Patricia Grace-Farfaglia
Bones Of Contention: Bone Mineral Density Recovery In Celiac Disease—A Systematic Review, Patricia Grace-Farfaglia
Nutrition Sciences Faculty Publications
Metabolic bone disease is a frequent co-morbidity in newly diagnosed adults with celiac disease (CD), an autoimmune disorder triggered by the ingestion of dietary gluten. This systematic review of studies looked at the efficacy of the gluten-free diet, physical activity, nutrient supplementation, and bisphosphonates for low bone density treatment. Case control and cohort designs were identified from PubMed and other academic databases (from 1996 to 2015) that observed newly diagnosed adults with CD for at least one year after diet treatment using the dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan. Only 20 out of 207 studies met the inclusion criteria. Methodological quality …
Scaphoid Stress Fracture In A 65-Year-Old Man With Low Bone Mineral Density: A Case Report, Dean W. Smith
Scaphoid Stress Fracture In A 65-Year-Old Man With Low Bone Mineral Density: A Case Report, Dean W. Smith
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Although commonly reported in women and less commonly in younger athletes, no studies have reported stress fractures of the scaphoid in older, sedentary men. Because of its rarity, osteoporosis in older men is often unrecognized and only diagnosed after the fracture. I describe a previously sedentary 65-year-old man who presented to my clinic with pain in the right wrist after his first day of intense physical activity and underwent 8 weeks of splinting and bracing for treatment of a fracture of the waist of the scaphoid. Ten weeks after the pain began, a computed tomography image revealed healing of the …
Performance Evaluation Of Material Decomposition Using Rapid Kvp-Switching Dual-Energy Ct For Assessing Bone Mineral Density, John M. Wait
Performance Evaluation Of Material Decomposition Using Rapid Kvp-Switching Dual-Energy Ct For Assessing Bone Mineral Density, John M. Wait
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Osteoporosis is diagnosed by assessing the bone mineral density (BMD) of the trabecular bone, and has previously been characterized with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or single-energy computed tomography (SECT). Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) is able to create two three-dimensional sets of images representing the densities of two materials in a given basis pair. DECT is theoretically capable of providing a true density measurement of trabecular bone material with the proper material basis pair.
Using the rapid kVp-switching GE HD750 scanner, the concentrations of various solutes were assessed in two-material syringe-phantoms in different experimental conditions with DECT material density images, SECT …
Predicting Risk For Adverse Outcomes Following Distal Radius Fracture, Saurabh Mehta Phd
Predicting Risk For Adverse Outcomes Following Distal Radius Fracture, Saurabh Mehta Phd
Physical Therapy Faculty Research
Some individuals remain at risk for adverse outcomes such as chronic wrist/hand pain, falls, and fall-related osteoporotic fractures after distal radius fracture (DRF) remain. This thesis includes five studies that were conducted to establish prediction rules or assessing the risk of these adverse outcomes following DRF.
The first manuscript outlines a theoretical framework (RACE - Reducing pain, Activating, Cognitive reshaping, Empowering) for managing the risk of adverse outcomes, mainly chronic pain, in individuals with DRF. The RACE is one of the first frameworks to suggest a risk-based management approach for individuals with DRF.
The Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) is a …
