Convergence And Divergence Of Opinion About Treatment Of Binocular Vision Disorders Among Vision Care Professionals, Sonia Young May 2026

Convergence And Divergence Of Opinion About Treatment Of Binocular Vision Disorders Among Vision Care Professionals, Sonia Young

Dissertations

There are three distinct professions prominent in the field of pediatric vision care. They are ophthalmology, optometry and orthoptics. All professions are integral to the detection and treatment of pediatric binocular vision disorders. However, distinct schools of thought exist to describe the best approach to pediatric binocular vision disorders and their treatments. Literature often highlights two opposing schools of thought represented by the “medical” and “behavioral” approaches. While there is academic debate about the merits and pitfalls of either approach, there is a paucity of nuanced perspectives which more closely resemble the ways in which pediatric ocular clinicians approach diagnosis …

Background: Paraneoplastic syndromes that affect both the optic disc and the brain parenchyma typically harbor antibodies directed toward CV2/collapsin response-mediator protein 5 (anti-CRMP5), amphiphysin, Ma antigen 2 (Ma2/Ta), and Yo. The most common cancers linked to anti-CRMP5 antibodies include small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC), followed by thymoma, renal cell carcinoma, and thyroid papillary carcinoma. A long-held belief explains papilledema as related to increased pressure within the subarachnoid space or the microvascular capillaries, but intracranial pressures within the normal standard range may exist in a person with a paraneoplastic syndrome and papilledema. The glymphatic system, a central waste-clearance conduit, may play a …

Comparison Of Ventilation Support During Laser Treatment Of Retinopathy Of Prematurity, Jason Peng, Raghav Taneja, Barry N. Wasserman, Krystal Hunter, Vineet Bhandari, Alla Kushnir

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Highlights: What are the main findings? Preterm infants undergoing ROP laser surgery with routine elective intubation had significantly longer durations of post-operative mechanical ventilation. Routine intubation during this procedure did not improve short-term clinical outcomes, such as overall hospital length of stay or timing of laser intervention in the infant’s life. What are the implications of the main findings? Routine intubation strategies may unnecessarily increase exposure to mechanical ventilation without improving clinical outcomes. Standardization of perioperative intubation practices across hospitals may be needed to optimize respiratory support in this vulnerable population. Objective: To compare respiratory outcomes between infants undergoing retinopathy …

Stimulus-Driven Cerebrospinal Fluid Dynamics Is Impaired In Glaucoma Patients, Ji Won Bang, Carlos Parra, Kevin Yu, Hyun Seo Lee, Gadi Wollstein, Joel Schuman, Kevin Chan

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), partly driven by sensory stimulation, is crucial for maintaining homeostasis and clearing metabolic waste. Whether such stimulus-driven CSF flow is disrupted in age-related neurodegenerative diseases of the visual system remains unclear. This study examined the CSF flow during visual stimulation in glaucoma patients and healthy older adults using functional magnetic resonance imaging. In glaucoma, CSF inflow becomes progressively decoupled from the visually evoked blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) response. Specifically, the characteristic stimulus-locked CSF patterns, which decrease after stimulus onset and increase after offset, diminish with disease severity. Mediation analysis suggests this flattened CSF pattern is driven by a flatter …

Department of Ophthalmology Faculty Publications

Penetrating keratoplasty has long been the standard treatment for many corneal pathologies, but interest has grown in less invasive, tissue-sparing alternatives. Bowman’s layer (BL) and Descemet’s membrane (DM) transplantation are two anterior approaches that use isolated acellular corneal layers to restore structural support and promote epithelial healing, while avoiding many of the limitations of full-thickness grafting. Although both techniques have been described for ectatic disorders, their theoretically low immunogenicity, minimal long-term steroid requirements, and capacity to support reepithelialization make them appropriate options for a range of nonectatic indications. This narrative review describes the application of BL (11 studies) and DM …
