A Diagnostic Challenge—Tinu Syndrome, Sophia Lee, Md, Claire Kassakian, Md
A Diagnostic Challenge—Tinu Syndrome, Sophia Lee, Md, Claire Kassakian, Md
Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.
Introduction: •TINU Syndrome: Tubulointerstitial Nephritis and Uveitis rare multi-system syndrome has renal manifestations typical of acute interstitial nephritis (AIN), in addition to bilateral anterior uveitis not well-understood •Thought to be an immune-mediated process, although mechanisms for disease remain unclear Likely secondary to a combination of genetic predisposition and certain environmental exposures •Genetic predisposition: specific HLA phenotypes possibly an auto-antigen to modified C-reactive protein (mCRP) •Potential triggers: Infections: tuberculosis, EBV, varicella zoster, chlamydia, toxoplasma Medications: antibiotics (β-lactams, meropenem, azithromycin, levofloxacin), NSAIDs, goreisan (Chinese herb) Endocrine diseases: hypoparathyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, IgG4-related autoimmune …
Blurry With A Chance Of Ultrasound: A Case Of Sudden Vision Loss, Anjeza Cipi, Emily Sealy
Blurry With A Chance Of Ultrasound: A Case Of Sudden Vision Loss, Anjeza Cipi, Emily Sealy
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications
[Case presentation] A 30-year-old man with Crohn’s disease presented to the emergency department (ED) with sudden, painless vision loss in his left eye. He described a central dark spot that rapidly progressed over 5 minutes to near-complete central vision loss, sparing peripheral vision. He denied trauma, exertion, Valsalva, or anticoagulant use. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) was performed on supine patient using a high-frequency linear probe (10-15 MHz) with copious gel over the closed eyelid, avoiding direct pressure. While instructing the patient to look in different directions, the eye was scanned in its entirety in transverse and sagittal planes. Gain and depth …
Hooked On Sight: Teen With Eye Trauma, Anjeza Cipi, Emily Sealy
Hooked On Sight: Teen With Eye Trauma, Anjeza Cipi, Emily Sealy
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications
[Case presentation] A 14-year-old male with no prior ocular history presented to the emergency department after accidentally striking his left eye on a metal garden hook while on vacation. He experienced a brief flash of light but denied floaters, vision changes, pain, or diplopia. Visual acuity was 20/20 bilaterally with correction. Pupils were equal and reactive, intraocular pressures were normal, and extraocular movements were intact. The injury noted is seen in Figures 1 and 2. There was no evidence of scleral penetration or foreign body on slit lamp examination. Intraocular pressure measurements were deferred until globe rupture was ruled out …
Optic Nerve Head Remodeling In Experimental High Myopia, Mahmoud Khalafallah
Optic Nerve Head Remodeling In Experimental High Myopia, Mahmoud Khalafallah
All ETDs from UAB
Myopia is a global health concern, with projected estimates that nearly half of the world's population will be myopic by 2050. While its refractive aspect can be corrected, the heightened susceptibility to sight-threatening comorbidities, particularly with high myopia, remains a challenge. Among these comorbidities, glaucoma is a major concern, with myopia recognized as an independent risk factor. However, the mechanistic link between myopia and glaucoma remains poorly understood. This dissertation investigates the multiscale remodeling changes in experimental high myopia and their potential implications for increased risk of glaucoma later in life. Using a multimodal approach, this dissertation investigates: (1) neural …
Effect Of Non-Complicated Cataract Extraction With Phacoemulsification On Central Macular Thickness (Cmt) And Ganglion Cell Complex (Gcc) In Non-Diabetic Patients At Sohag Teaching Hospital, Mohammed Shikhoun Ahmed, Mariam Kamal
Effect Of Non-Complicated Cataract Extraction With Phacoemulsification On Central Macular Thickness (Cmt) And Ganglion Cell Complex (Gcc) In Non-Diabetic Patients At Sohag Teaching Hospital, Mohammed Shikhoun Ahmed, Mariam Kamal
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background: Cataracts are widely acknowledged as the primary cause of blindness on a global scale. Cataract surgery, particularly phacoemulsification, is the most effective and the only approved intervention for cataracts, regardless of etiology. Phacoemulsification, with its numerous advantages, is the most widely used method for cataract removal. It is important to note that while phacoemulsification is considered a safe and effective procedure, there are potential complications that need to be managed. Methods: This study included one hundred eyes of 93 nondiabetic patients undergoing noncomplicated cataract operation at the ophthalmology department at Sohag Teaching Hospital. A preoperative assessment of the best …
