Endophthalmitis incidence and clinical characteristics was reported to change during Covid-19 pandemic, due to multiple influencing factors, such as prolonged lockdown periods, persistent immune suppression following Sars-Cov-2 infection, and mask wearing. We conducted a retrospective eight-year study, during January 2016 and December 2023, that aims to investigates the differences in terms of etiology, clinical characteristics and outcomes in cases with acute endophthalmitis, admitted before (2016-2019) and during Covid-19 pandemic (2020-2023). The two study subgroups were homogenous in term of age, gender distribution, associated comorbidities, and addressability. During Covid-19 pandemic there were significant delays in presentation (p=0.02), more cases of endogenous …

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the major causes of visual impairment and blindness in adult population. The pathology is complex, the metabolic changes induced by the hyperglycemic environment leading to neurodegeneration, microvascular damage, with secondary ischemic and inflammatory changes in the retina. This review aims to update the literature data related to the role of inflammation in the onset and progression of diabetic retinopathy. Thus, the molecular and biochemical mechanisms triggered by excess glucose increase the expression of genes involved in inflammatory processes, which leads to the synthesis of inflammatory cytokines such as Il1, Il6, TNF alpha as well as …

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a complex, chronic, and progressive disease which affects the macular area, being one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss worldwide. Specific alterations of retinal structure occur at the macular level, which regarding its severity can range from the presence of drusen to the development of geographic atrophy or choroidal neovascularization. AMD has long been considered a degenerative disease, but new studies highlight the role of inflammation present both in the atrophic form and in the exudative form. The present review is based on comprehensive research on PubMed and Web of Science databases, and …

Klebsiella Pneumoniae Cryptogenic Liver Abscess And Endophthalmitis – A Case Report And Review Of Literature, Mihai Leonard Grecescu, Monica Grecescu, Andreea Smarandache Maria, Cristian Mihai Branescu, Anca Anghelache, Anca Silvia Dumitriu, Stana Paunica, Andreea Cristina Costea Oct 2021

Klebsiella Pneumoniae Cryptogenic Liver Abscess And Endophthalmitis – A Case Report And Review Of Literature, Mihai Leonard Grecescu, Monica Grecescu, Andreea Smarandache Maria, Cristian Mihai Branescu, Anca Anghelache, Anca Silvia Dumitriu, Stana Paunica, Andreea Cristina Costea

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Klebsiella pneumoniae has emerged as the predominant pathogenic agent of liver abscess in Asia, and the incidence is increasing worldwide. Hypervirulent strains are associated with septic metastatic dissemination in the eyes, lungs, and central nervous system, causing severe morbidity. We present the case of a 54year old man, with no previous comorbidities, admitted in emergency for the blind red painful eye. Further investigation documented septic endophthalmitis with transscleral extension and orbital cellulitis. Thoraco-abdominal computed tomography evidenced a hepatic abscess as the locus of the primary infection. Intravenous antibiotherapy with cefuroxime, followed by meropenem and vancomycin were efficient for managing the …

Clinical Features, Pathology, And Surgical Management Of Periocular Giant Basal Cell Carcinoma, Oxana Madalina Grosu, Vladimir Poroch, Natalia Velenciuc, Sorinel Lunca

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Objectives. Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are malignant tumors which rarely metastasize, are slow-growing, and extensively locally destructive. BCCs more than 5 cm in diameter are defined as giant. Most often they arise as a result of neglect, as the patient avoids, delays, or refuses to see a doctor. The large tumor diameter and consequently of the post-excisional defect make these lesions difficult to treat surgically with respect to selecting the surgical reconstruction technique. Method. We studied a group of 9 patients, aged 60 to 85 years, diagnosed with giant basal cell carcinomas (GBCCs) with periocular location in which surgery was …

Screening Amblyopic Risk Factors In A Pediatric Population Using An Automated Vision Screener, Rebecca Dawn Slominski May 2018

Screening Amblyopic Risk Factors In A Pediatric Population Using An Automated Vision Screener, Rebecca Dawn Slominski

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Amblyopia is the most common visual disorder in children and is potentially curable if detected early and treated properly in the first few years of life. Amblyopia is the leading cause of monocular vision loss in children (Bradfield, 2013). It is a developmental neuroplasticity which derives from birth causing structural and functional changes in the eye and brain. With this structural and functional disruption, visual blur occurs due to refractive amblyopia, strabismic amblyopia, cataracts (form-deprivation amblyopia), or a combination of any of these (Solebo, Cumberland, & Rahi, 2015). Refractive errors related to amblyopia can also occur. The purpose of this …
