Context: Medical management for head and neck cancer (HNC) often includes neck dissection surgery, a side effect of which is shoulder dysfunction. There is no consensus for which patient-reported outcome measure (PRO) is most appropriate to quantify shoulder dysfunction in this population.

Background: PD-L1 expression and tumor-mutational burden enrich for patients that respond to checkpoint blockade, but these evaluations are only a component of the entire story. Recently, our lab reported that evaluation of specific cell-cell relationships provided a powerful biomarker for overall survival in patients with HPV- head and neck cancer (HNSCC). Background: Metformin, an oral anti-hyperglycemic drug which inhibits mitochondrial complex I and oxidative phosphorylation has been reported to correlate with improved outcomes in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and other cancers. This effect is postulated to occur through disruption of tumor-driven metabolic and immune dysregulation in the tumor microenvironment (TME). The phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt/mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signalling pathway is aberrantly activated in most head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs). PI3K signalling drives cellular proliferation, protein synthesis and cell survival. Although numerous targeted agents are available to inhibit PI3K signalling, results have been variable and factors influencing response to PI3K inhibition (e.g. genomic aberrations, pathway interconnectivity, acquired drug resistance) are not well defined. Purpose: To review brachytherapy use in recurrent head and neck carcinoma (RHNC) with focus on its efficacy and complication rates.

Material and methods: A literature search of PubMed, Ovid, Google Scholar, and Scopus was conducted from 1990 to 2017. Publications describing treatment of RHNC with brachytherapy with or without surgery were included. The focus of this review is on oncologic outcomes and the safety of brachytherapy in the recurrent setting.

Results: Thirty studies involving RHNC treatment with brachytherapy were reviewed. Brachytherapy as adjunctive treatment to surgical resection appears to be associated with an improved local regional control and overall survival, …

Hidradenocarcinoma is a rare and locally aggressive tumor rendering a poor prognosis. Furthermore, very few cases present with nodal metastasis. Diagnosing such an entity, and then differentiating it from a benign counterpart, poses a great challenge to the clinicians. There are no established treatment guidelines for the management of this disease, particularly in patients with nodal involvement. We present a case of a young male who was diagnosed with hidradenocarcinoma of the scalp, along with a neck swelling. A thorough diagnostic evaluation was done with endoscopy, pathological, and radiological investigations. He was successfully treated with resection of the scalp lesion …
