Breast Cancer Incidence In Black And White Women Stratified By Estrogen And Progesterone Receptor Statuses., Michael X. Gleason, Tengiz Mdzinarishvili, Simon Sherman

Journal Articles: Eppley Institute

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease presented by different phenotypes and that white women have a higher breast cancer incidence rate, whereas black women have a higher mortality rate. It is also well known that white women have lower incidence rates than black women until approximately age 40, when rate curves cross over and white women have higher rates. The goal of this study was to validate the risk of white and black women to breast cancer phenotypes, stratified by statuses of the estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) receptors.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: SEER17 data were …

  • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy Achieves High Control Rates in Lung Cancer: Stereotactic body radiation (SBRT), a relatively new treatment modality, has recently become a very successful treatment-and may even exceeded the effectiveness of surgery-for early-stage lung cancer
  • Inflammatory Breast Cancer: Clinical Challenge, Research Enigma- Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) stands apart from other cancers of the breast in its unusual clinical presentation, its aggressiveness, and its poor prognosis. Researchers and clinicians are working to clarify what distinguishes IBC from other breast cancers and to discover treatments that improve patient outcomes

Small Non-Coding Rnas Govern Mammary Gland Tumorigenesis., Zuoren Yu, Richard Pestell Mar 2012

Small Non-Coding Rnas Govern Mammary Gland Tumorigenesis., Zuoren Yu, Richard Pestell

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Small non-coding RNAs include siRNA, miRNA, piRNA and snoRNA. The involvement of miRNAs in the regulation of mammary gland tumorigenesis has been widely studied while the role for other small non-coding RNAs remains unclear. Here we summarize the involvement of miRNA in breast cancer onset and progression through regulating the cell cycle and cellular proliferation. The regulation of breast cancer stem cells and tumor regeneration by miRNA is reviewed. In addition, the emerging evidence demonstrating the involvement of piRNA and snoRNA in breast cancer is briefly described.

Long-Term Outcome Of Breast Cancer Patients With One To Two Nodes Involved-Application Of Nodal Ratio, Patricia Tai, Kurian Joseph, Ali El-Gayed, Edward Yu

Abstract: Nodal ratio (NR) is defined as the number of involved nodes to the number of nodes examined. There is limited information on the application of NR on population data. Previous reports in breast cancer generally analyzed one to three positive axillary nodes as a single group. This study investigates whether one to three positive axillary nodes is a homogeneous group in prognosis by comparing one to two positive nodes to three positive nodes. The population-based registry of a Canadian province from 1981 through 1995 was searched. As the reliability of nodal assessment depends on the number of nodes sampled, …
