Calibration Of A Novel Microdosimetry System For In Vitro Applications Of Actinide Radiopharmaceuticals, Lydia J. Wilson, Brian Miller, George Tabatadze, Firas Mourtada

Department of Radiation Oncology Posters

Background

  • Alpha-emitting radionuclides show promise for targeted radiopharmaceutical therapy (TRT).
  • High linear energy transfer and short range cause highly localized DNA damage for effective cancer cell eradication.
  • However, distributions of radioactivity and absorbed dose on the cellular scale remain elusive.
  • Progress toward understanding α-TRT radiobiologic response, evaluating novel α-TRT drug efficacy, and optimizing administration for personalized treatments will require knowledge of radioactivity and absorbed dose distributions.
  • A novel real-time α camera, the ionizing radiation quantum imaging detector (iQID), has successfully mapped the microdistribution of α-emitting radionuclides in mouse and human tissues [1].

Background

  • Surgery is the primary form of definitive treatment for early-stage lung cancer.
  • Poor lung function before surgery places patients at high risk of pulmonary complications after resection.
  • Surgeons evaluate patient fitness for surgery using pulmonary function tests (PFTs) to calculate the predicted postoperative PFT (ppoPFT).
  • Conventional ppoPFT calculations assume homogeneous lung function, which can be inaccurate.
  • 4DCT-ventilation is a novel lung function imaging modality developed in radiation oncology that uses 4DCT data to calculate high-resolution ventilation maps.

The tumor microenvironment (TME) is a complex system that plays a crucial role in tumor progression, immune evasion, and therapy resistance. The TME is composed of various cell types, including tumor cells, stromal cells, and immune cells such as macrophages. Macrophages are versatile myeloid cells which can exhibit both pro-tumoral and anti-tumoral functions, depending on their phenotype and the TME context. M1 macrophages have demonstrated promising pro-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects, while tumor associated M2 macrophages (TAMs) play an anti-inflammatory role and promote tumor immune escape. Understanding the complex interactions between TAMs and the TME is, therefore, essential for developing effective …

What is an sdRNA? Noncoding RNA (ncRNA) is a class of RNA that includes microRNA (miRNA) and small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA). Fragments excised from ncRNAs are known as noncodingderived RNA (ndRNA). A certain class of ndRNAs that are derived from snoRNAs have been denoted as Small Nucleolar Derived RNAs (sdRNAs). Our lab has previously hypothesized and demonstrated that sdRNAs display regulatory functions on target genes, similar to the functions of miRNAs. sdRNAs are almost identical to microRNAs and differ mainly in their source of origin.

Our lab has shown that sdRNA-93 is frequently misexpressed in breast cancer cell lines and …

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Pet therapy is a complementary type of therapeutics in which a person and animal have a guided interaction with the purpose of helping someone cope with physical and/or mental illness. Animal-assisted therapy is used in numerous settings and has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and heart rate, and decrease anxiety and depression (Husson University, 2022). In particular, pediatric oncology patients have enormous amounts of stress in their lives, which leads to increased anxiety and decreased quality of life (Children's Cancer Cause, 2023). While evidence shows that integrating pet therapy in pediatric oncology patients produces significant benefits on …

Background

Forty-two million adults in the United States are providing unpaid care for a family member or friend over the age of 50. For approximately 2.5 million of these caregivers, cancer is the primary illness or disability of their care recipient (National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, 2020). As baby boomers continue to age, and the number of cancer survivors continues to increase, the need for informal caregivers will expand exponentially.

While Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is recommended for older patients with cancer and distress screening is recommended for all cancer patients, there are currently no recommendations regarding screening for …

Nutritional Support For Oncology Patients: Role For The Pcp, Annabelle S. Feist

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Adequate nutrition is a key prognostic factor in the treatment outcomes of patients with cancer diagnoses. Despite the increased morbidity and mortality of malnutrition, the importance of nutrition for oncology patients is often not well communicated and not well understood by patients. Part of this issue stems from the limited information most patient can absorb at any given doctors appointment, especially regarding their cancer. Primary care providers hold a unique position to fill this gap and have the information be heard and retained given their usual role in addressing overall health. This project compiles resources in an easily accessible and …
