Background: Phacomatosis pigmentokeratotica (PPK) is a subtype of epidermal nevus syndrome characterized by the co-existence of a sebaceous nevus and a speckled lentiginous nevus and described in approximately 30 cases in literature. PPK is now recognized as a mosaic RASopathy due a postzygotic mutation in the Ras-Raf-MEK-ERK pathway. RAS variants are also known to contribute to tumorigenesis, in some pediatric cancers, including rhabdomyosarcoma. Objective: Describe the presentation and evaluation of a child with pelvic rhabdomyosarcoma and evolving skin lesions found to have a rare mosaic-RASopathy. Design/Method: Case Report Results: The patient is a former 32-week premature female who presented to …

Unleashing Wellness: Exploring The Impact Of Pet Therapy On Anxiety Reduction, Quality Of Life, And Treatment Adherence In Pediatric Oncology Patients, Karina Brouwer

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Pet therapy is a complementary type of therapeutics in which a person and animal have a guided interaction with the purpose of helping someone cope with physical and/or mental illness. Animal-assisted therapy is used in numerous settings and has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and heart rate, and decrease anxiety and depression (Husson University, 2022). In particular, pediatric oncology patients have enormous amounts of stress in their lives, which leads to increased anxiety and decreased quality of life (Children's Cancer Cause, 2023). While evidence shows that integrating pet therapy in pediatric oncology patients produces significant benefits on …

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in infants (iALL) is a high-risk subtype of childhood leukemia, with poor survival outcomes despite intensive therapies. Rearrangement of KMT2A (KMT2A-r) on chromosome 11q23 is the most frequent cytogenetic abnormality in iALL, occurring in 70% of cases. KMT2A-r is associated with chemotherapy resistance, early relapse, and rapid leukemic progression, all of which contribute to poor survival outcomes. The most common KMT2A-r in iALL is KMT2A::AFF1 (MLL::AF4), derived from t(4;11)(q21;23) and arises in utero as shown in multiple clinical studies. Infant ALL’s cell of origin is thought to be a very early hematopoietic precursor, with transcriptomic studies of …

An Occupational Therapy Approach To Play For Pediatric Cancer Patients, Michelle Erika Dytan, Karen Park Apr 2023

An Occupational Therapy Approach To Play For Pediatric Cancer Patients, Michelle Erika Dytan, Karen Park

Spring 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Play as an occupation has been long identified as a primary aspect of a child’s life (Moore & Lynch, 2017). Play provides children with ways to explore the world while learning skills to improve critical thinking, creativity, and positive self-esteem, and simply to have fun (Guirguis, 2018; Yanof, 2019). Children with cancer face barriers that limit their ability to engage in play, with negative consequences to their social, cognitive, and emotional development (Nijhof et al., 2018). There is an evident gap in a lack of play opportunities in community-based settings, which may limit a child’s personal development, social skills, and …

Psychosocial Needs Of Pediatric Patients With Cancer Predisposition Syndromes: Standardized Screening Needed, Meredith Ehrhardt, Mirae Fornander, Rachel Moore Mar 2023

Psychosocial Needs Of Pediatric Patients With Cancer Predisposition Syndromes: Standardized Screening Needed, Meredith Ehrhardt, Mirae Fornander, Rachel Moore

Posters

Introduction Cancer predisposition syndromes (CPS; e.g., Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome) require routine, standardized medical monitoring with accompanying unique, complex psychosocial needs (e.g., family medical needs). Despite limited research within pediatric populations, emerging literature has begun to support the benefit of routine psychosocial screening in this population. Very few pediatric CPS clinics with dedicated psychosocial care (i.e., psychology) exist in the U.S. and there is currently no standard of care for psychosocial support of CPS patients. This study aims to better understand the psychosocial needs of pediatric CPS patients and support the need for a standardized psychosocial screening protocol among …

Treatment Of Recurrent Wilms Tumor With Irinotecan/Temozolomide, Meagan Vacek, Terrie Flatt

Posters

Background: Despite improvement in relapse free survival (RFS) in recurrent Wilms tumor, the 4-year RFS rate for patients treated with vincristine/dactinomycin/doxorubicin is approximately 40%. Ifosfamide, carboplatin and etoposide are commonly used in relapsed solid tumors, but have significant toxicities and require hospital admission for administration. Our patient focused on quality of life, and this led to exploration of other treatment options. Objective: Describe a case of multiply relapsed Wilms tumor with management on oral irinotecan/temozolomide for improved quality of life and remission for almost 1 year. Design/Method: Case Report Results: The patient is an 11-year-old female diagnosed with Wilms tumor …

Novel Mouse Model For Analysis Of Macrophage Function In Neuroblastoma, Gabrielle L. Brumfield, Shelby M. Knoche, Alaina C. Larson, Brittany Poelaert, Benjamin T. Goetz, Poomy Pandey, Don W. Coulter, Joyce C. Solheim

Child Health Research Institute Pediatric Research Forum

Background: Neuroblastoma is the third most common childhood cancer and accounts for 12% of cancer-associated deaths in children under the age of 15. Patients with high risk neuroblastoma have a poor 5-year survival rate of less than 50%. Neuroblastoma tumors treated with the histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi) vorinostat have increased infiltration of macrophages with upregulated immune cell-surface receptors. Neuroblastoma cells release VEGF and M-CSF, which may alter intratumoral macrophage populations. VEGF has also been implicated in alteration of amyloid precursor protein family processing. Our lab demonstrated that amyloid precursor protein 2 (APLP2), a member of the amyloid precursor protein …

Abstract: Brain tumors are the most common solid tumor of childhood. Approximately 50% of pediatric CNS tumors are low grade gliomas (WHO grade I or II) and Pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) is the most common accounting for 33% of all gliomas in children 0-14 years and ~18% of all childhood brain tumors. Prognosis with this slow-growing tumor is excellent; 10 year overall survival of ~95%. However, event free survival averages ~50%. Patient age and extent of tumor resection are key prognostic factors; tumor location and size impact resection and outcome. Histopathological features indicate PA is a benign tumor and rarely are …

The aim of this study is to observe cell proliferation, cell viability, apoptosis, and autophagy on acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines, NB4 and U937, with the drug repurposing of mefloquine (MQ). Methods such as the 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-Yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide (MTT) assay and trypan blue staining have shown a decrease in live cells with high concentrations of mefloquine. Using their average perspective IC50 values of MQ concentration, Western blotting was applied by means of apoptosis and autophagy markers to determine if the induction of apoptosis and inhibition of autophagy was present in MQ-treated AML cells. The experiment will be continued with more …
