Background

There are limited data on risk of arrhythmias among patients with lymphoproliferative disorders. We designed this study to determine the risk of atrial and ventricular arrhythmia during treatment of lymphoma in a real‐world setting.

Methods and Results

The study population comprised 2064 patients included in the University of Rochester Medical Center Lymphoma Database from January 2013 to August 2019. Cardiac arrhythmias—atrial fibrillation/flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular arrhythmia, and bradyarrhythmia—were identified using International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD‐10) codes. Invasion of a renal cell carcinoma thrombus into the inferior vena cava and right atrium is infrequent. Reaching and completely excising a tumor from the inferior vena cava is particularly challenging because the liver covers the surgical field. We report the case of a 61-year-old man who underwent surgery for a renal cell carcinoma of the right kidney that extended into the inferior vena cava and right atrium. Background—Trastuzumab (TZB) is an established therapy for HER2 positive breast cancer. The use of TZB is commonly associated with cardiotoxicity manifesting as asymptomatic decrease in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) or overt heart failure. Several studies demonstrated favorable effects of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and beta blockers (BB) in the prevention of chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity. We hypothesize that patients, randomized to receive an ACE inhibitor or a beta-blocker during trastuzumab therapy for breast cancer, will maintain a higher LVEF than patients randomized to placebo.

Cardiac metastasis from primary tumors is rare. Cardiac metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue is rare; in the English-language medical literature, we read of only 4 patients with this condition. Here, we discuss the cases of 2 such patients who presented at our institution only a few months apart. In both, with the use of 2-dimensional echocardiography, we incidentally found cardiac metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. Resection of the cardiac masses was precluded.
