Introduction: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols have been introduced to several surgical specialties with the intention to reduce peri-operative adverse events and improve various health-system quality metrics including length of stay and patient satisfaction. Though this has been studied in the setting of spine surgery, the vast majority are single institution protocols biased toward academic teaching hospitals. There is a paucity of literature studying the utilization of a multi-institutional ERAS protocols that is applicable to community hospitals without associated training programs. We present the Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MSSIC) two-year experience implementing a multi-institutional ERAS protocol for elective …

Introduction: Though often necessary for adequate analgesia after spine surgery, continued opioid use can lead to chronic dependency. The Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MSSIC) has demonstrated in prior work the promise of utilizing a multi-institutional morphine milliequivalent (MME) cutoff for elective anterior cervical surgery in the opioid naıve population. However, the effect of this cutoff in patients who were already on opioids pre-operatively have not previously been studied. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether changes in prescribing patterns in the opioid naıve population would also translate to the non-naıve populations, and whether the non-naıve population would …

Clinical History 41-year-old male with no prior relevant medical history presented to the emergency department with severe neck pain and occipital headaches radiating bilaterally to the temporal regions. He also reported diplopia and “tunnel vision.” He had presented two weeks earlier with similar symptoms and was advised outpatient follow-up. Initial CT head and cervical spine were unremarkable. Imaging Findings Brain MRI/MRV demonstrated heterogeneous signal and enhancement in the left transverse and sigmoid sinuses and jugular bulb, initially thought to reflect possible motion artifact. However, CT venography was recommended for further assessment. The MRI also showed subtle left posterior occipital subdural …

Introduction: Chronic opioid dependency in spine surgery is an ongoing concern given the ongoing opioid epidemic. We have previously reported on our cohort of opioid-naıve patients, however the literature has shown that patients with opioid use at baseline are at higher risk of less favorable outcomes. Starting in 2022, MSSIC instituted state-wide prescribing guidelines for opioid naıve patients undergoing one- or two-level lumbar decompression surgery (laminectomy, laminotomy, foraminotomy, microdiscectomy) with performance goals of 80% compliance. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether there would be a form of a “halo” effect on prescribing patterns for patients with baseline …

INTRODUCTION: Particle-induced osteolysis resulting from polyethylene wear remains a source of implant failure in anatomic total shoulder designs. Modern polyethylene components are irradiated in an oxygen-free environment to induce polyethylene cross-linking, but an unfortunate byproduct of this process is free radical production. Melting or heat annealing is one method of reducing free radicals but can compromise the component’s mechanical properties. The antioxidant, Vitamin E, has been introduced as an alternative adjuvant to neutralize free radicals. Specifically, in anatomic shoulder arthroplasty with a ceramic head component, the vitamin E-enhanced polyethylene showed improved wear compared to the conventional highly-cross linked polyethylene. This …

Background/Introduction
Introduction. Durable surgical outcome for patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) usually requires decompression and fusion. An FDA IDE study (NCT03115983) compares direct surgical decompression and stabilization with a novel dynamic sagittal tether (Limiflex, Empirical Spine) (DST) to decompression and instrumented TLIF for symptomatic DS. Aim. Compare clinical outcomes of DST and TLIF to 4 years for symptomatic degenerative spondylolisthesis.
Materials/Methods
Patients and Methods. All patients had DS and spinal canal stenosis with ODI≥35 and VAS-leg/hip≥50 (full eligibility criteria at clinicaltrials.gov, NCT03115983). Patients received a decompression and DST or TLIF at the level of DS, with or without an adjacent …

Introduction
Durable outcome for degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) usually requires decompression and fusion. Fusion, however, places greater stress at adjacent levels with increased incidence of adjacent segment disease. A novel interspinous tension band is proposed for segmental stabilization after decompression for DS, as an alternative to fusion. An FDA IDE study (NCT03115983) compares decompression and stabilization with the tension band (treatment group) to decompression and transforaminal interbody instrumented fusion (control group) for symptomatic DS.
Methods
Prospectively enrolled IDE study subjects with 24 months postoperative radiographic follow-up were included in this analysis. X-rays obtained during the follow-up period for both the treatment …

Introduction
Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is one of the leading causes of chronic debilitating low back pain. DDD is characterized by changes in cellular characteristics resulting in loss of extracellular matrix(ECM) water holding capacity of the nucleus pulposus(NP). DDD can lead to translation of physiological loads from the anterior 2/3 of the spinal column to the posterior 1/3, resulting in increased stress on the facets and ligamentum flavum causing facet hypertrophy and canal stenosis. Novel stem cell regenerative therapies could restore the anterior column load via NP regeneration.
Methods
A hydrogel scaffold was created composed of self-assembling polyethylene glycol(PEG) functionalized …
