BACKGROUND: Decision-making in spine surgery is continuously shaped by advancements in the field through evidence-based medicine. This is demonstrated through the evolution of the quality and impact of scientific research within the field of spine surgery. To date, there is limited literature investigating interval changes in methodological rigor of scientific investigation within the field of spine surgery.

METHODS: The top 100 cited articles were recorded for manuscripts from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2023, and the top 100 most cited manuscripts of all time for spine surgery, via the Scopus abstract and citation database. Data collected included year of …

Comparison Of Graft Patency Between Sta, Ra, And Sv Grafts Of Intracranial Aneurysms Of The Internal Carotid Artery, Nassos Tziviskos, Hallie Tiburzi, Susrut Dube May 2025

Comparison Of Graft Patency Between Sta, Ra, And Sv Grafts Of Intracranial Aneurysms Of The Internal Carotid Artery, Nassos Tziviskos, Hallie Tiburzi, Susrut Dube

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Abstract

Background: Patients with intracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms that are not amenable to treatments like coiling, stenting, or clipping have limited treatment options. One option is vascular bypass of the aneurysm to introduce a stable route for cerebral perfusion, which can be performed using the superficial temporal artery (STA) or alternatively radial artery (RA) or saphenous vein (SV) grafts, among other vessels.

Methods: The major databases were searched to identify studies that explored graft patency and functional outcome for patients who underwent bypass for intracranial ICA aneurysms with STA, RA, or SV grafts and proportion meta-analysis was performed. …

Perioperative Goal-Directed Fluid Therapy In Neurosurgical Patients: A Scoping Review Of Current Evidence And Research Gaps, Daarsh Goradia, Riya Gandhi, Nisarg Shah, Eric Choi May 2025

Perioperative Goal-Directed Fluid Therapy In Neurosurgical Patients: A Scoping Review Of Current Evidence And Research Gaps, Daarsh Goradia, Riya Gandhi, Nisarg Shah, Eric Choi

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background: Neurosurgical patients are sensitive to fluid imbalances in postoperative settings. Traditional fluid management has been shown to have variable outcomes. Goal-directed fluid therapy (GDFT) is a tailored approach, but its benefits are not well established in neurosurgery.

Hypothesis: The aim of this study is to identify and map the existing literature on perioperative GDFT in neurosurgical patients, including study characteristics, reported outcomes, and knowledge gaps.

Methods: This scoping review follows the PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines and the Arksey and O’Malley six-stage methodological framework. A literature search was performed across three databases from January 2000 to April 23, 2025. Studies evaluating …

Pituitary Adenoma Presenting As Cranial Nerve Iii Palsy And Hemifacial Pain, Yoona Choe, Justin George, Matthew Boyle, Peter Maduka May 2024

Pituitary Adenoma Presenting As Cranial Nerve Iii Palsy And Hemifacial Pain, Yoona Choe, Justin George, Matthew Boyle, Peter Maduka

Pituitary adenomas are common neoplasms arising from the pituitary adenohypophyseal cell. They can be classified by cell type, size and as nonfunctioning or functioning based on the secretion of pituitary hormones. Of these, approximately 48% are macroadenomas (>10 mm) and approximately 53% are prolactinomas. For how common these adenomas are, only 1 of 1100 persons manifest clinical symptoms1 rendering detection and clinical management challenging.

Non-functioning adenomas are slow growing like most pituitary adenomas and are usually detected due to their mass effect on neighboring structures.2 The majority of the reported symptoms as a results of these mass …

Spontaneous Intracranial Hemorrhage In A 29-Year-Old Male: A Case Report, Md Fateha, Caroline Nguyen, Michael A. Morris May 2024

Spontaneous Intracranial Hemorrhage In A 29-Year-Old Male: A Case Report, Md Fateha, Caroline Nguyen, Michael A. Morris

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage is rare, especially in a young patient population. Signs and symptoms of intracranial hemorrhage include facial droop, vision loss, motor deficits with extraocular movements, deficits with tongue movement, weakness in the arms or legs, sensation loss, and mental status change. This is a case report of a 29-year-old male with no past medical history who presented for a spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage. This patient's only neurologic deficit was the loss of visual field on the left inferior quadrant of his field of vision. The patient obtained a CT head non-contrast which showed 21 mm acute right occipital hemorrhage …

Obstructive Hydrocephalus Caused By A Colloid Cyst Presenting As A Transient Ischemic Attack (Tia), Muhammad Nadeem May 2023

Obstructive Hydrocephalus Caused By A Colloid Cyst Presenting As A Transient Ischemic Attack (Tia), Muhammad Nadeem

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Colloid cysts are benign growths commonly found in the third ventricle or at the Foramen of Monroe. They are composed of epithelial lining filled with gelatinous material that contain cholesterol, mucin, old blood and ions. Most colloid cysts are asymptomatic but can present with a variety of symptoms that range from headaches, diplopia, memory problems, and vertigo. They can also present as an obstructive hydrocephalus with the classic “Wet, wacky and wobbly” triad. Rarely colloid cysts have been reported to cause sudden death. They can present to the ED with any spectrum of these symptoms.

Different embolic materials are utilized in MMA embolization of chronic subdural hematoma per operators’ discretion. We aim to compare the clinical and radiographic efficacy of different embolic materials in a pooled retrospective cohort of two US centers.

Case Study Of Horner Syndrome Due To Internal Carotid Artery Dissection, Kajel Patel May 2023

Case Study Of Horner Syndrome Due To Internal Carotid Artery Dissection, Kajel Patel

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Carotid artery dissection can occur either spontaneously or because of trauma. It is usually the most common cause of stroke in middle-aged patients. The symptoms can be transient or persistent and typically occur a few days after the inciting traumatic event.
