Primary brain and CNS tumors comprise the most common tumors in children and are the most common cause of cancer deaths in this population. Pediatric primary malignant brain tumors including high-grade glioma and medulloblastoma account for a significant proportion of these cancer deaths. Advances in the surgical management and adjuvant treatment paradigms have improved the prognosis of many patients with these tumors, but there remains a subset of treatment-resistant tumors or tumors with unique genetics aberrations and aggressive phenotypes that confer a poor prognosis. Immunotherapeutic strategies have demonstrated promise in pre-clinical studies and early clinical trials. However, high-fidelity evaluation of …

Background: Institutions around the world have noted increasing trends in complicated sinogenic infections in children following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Treatment of these infections often requires combined medical and surgical management. Further study is needed to understand changing epidemiology, microbiology, and contributing demographic factors for these infections. We noted increasing trend of surgically managed complicated sinusitis during the COVID-19 pandemic at our institution and hypothesized there were higher rates of intracranial complications.
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study with chart review of all children under the age of 18 treated surgically for complicated sinusitis between January 1, …

OBJECTIVE: Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a severe drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) of childhood. The Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) is established as a safe and effective treatment for DRE. This study assesses efficacy and tolerability of the auto-stimulation VNS models in pediatric patients with LGS.
METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of a cohort of pediatric patients (Age 1-18 years old) with LGS implanted with an auto-stimulation VNS model at a single level four pediatric epilepsy center. Patient responder's rate was measured as seizure reduction over baseline and improvements in five quality-of-life measures as reported by the patients and families. Efficacy …

Objective: To characterize musculoskeletal pain intensity, duration, frequency, and interference with activities of daily living in children with cerebral palsy (CP) before and after intrathecal baclofen pump placement.
Design: Prospective cohort study.
Setting: Children's tertiary hospital.
Participants: Participants were children with CP (N=32; 53% male; mean age, 9.9y; age range, 4-17y). The majority of participants had a CP diagnosis of quadriplegia (76%) and relied on wheeled mobility (91%).
Interventions: Assessments were completed pre- and post intrathecal baclofen pump implant.
Main outcome measures: Because of considerable patient heterogeneity, both pain measures (Brief Pain Inventory, Dalhousie Pain Interview) were completed by proxy …
