Stroke Preventive In African American Women Ages 20-40 That Are Using Or Have Used Oral Contraceptives, Ashanti L. N. Coleman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This Doctor of Nursing Practice project will inform the audience of stroke awareness as it pertains to oral contraceptives. The study’s focus was to enhance the knowledge of African American women ages 20–40 that have used or are currently using an oral contraceptive. It has been identified that this patient population lacked the knowledge regarding stroke and oral contraceptives, and African American women continue to have the highest incidence of stroke. African American women also make up more than half of the consumers utilizing oral contraceptives. An oral contraceptive knowledge questionnaire was utilized from previous research to determine if any …

Iron Deficiency Anemia: An Unexpected Cause Of An Acute Occipital Lobe Stroke In An Otherwise Healthy Young Woman, Qian Zhang, Khine S. Shan, Conor O'Sullivan, Travis C. Nace Apr 2020

Iron Deficiency Anemia: An Unexpected Cause Of An Acute Occipital Lobe Stroke In An Otherwise Healthy Young Woman, Qian Zhang, Khine S. Shan, Conor O'Sullivan, Travis C. Nace

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

A 29-year-old caucasian woman who presented to the hospital with an acute onset of right eye visual disturbance and headache was found to have an acute left occipital lobe infarction. Past medical history was significant for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) secondary to menorrhagia. Her initial hemoglobin level was 7.8 G/DL, and her symptoms improved after iron and blood transfusions. Hypercoagulable studies were completed in the outpatient setting, and the results were unremarkable. Her acute stroke was most likely related to IDA as she had low cardiovascular risk factors along with a negative complete stroke workup.

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Among 170 adults with sickle cell disease, we evaluated chronic pain impact and disability prevalence, assessed age and gender differences, and identified psychosocial predictors of chronic pain intensity and disability. Most participants had a high level of disability. Chronic pain intensity and disability were significantly associated with pain catastrophizing and chronic pain self-efficacy, and worsened with age. Further research is needed to confirm study findings and develop interventions, including palliative care approaches that address catastrophizing and disability, particularly for young women and middle-aged adults with sickle cell disease. Moreover, consistent clinical assessment of chronic pain and psychosocial health should be …

In Uganda, there is paucity of data on the prevalence of stroke in children admitted in a tertiary institution. We determined the prevalence of stroke amongst children with SCA admitted to Mulago National Referral Hospital in Uganda and described the ir co-morbidities. Methods: We conducted a retrospective record review of children with SCA admitted from August 2012 to August 2014 to the Paediatric Haematology Ward of Mulago Hospital in …

Comparing Direct Factor Xa Inhibitors And Warfarin In The Prevention Of Stroke In Patients With Atrial Fibrillation, Alessandra Lof, Stephanie Pillai May 2016

Comparing Direct Factor Xa Inhibitors And Warfarin In The Prevention Of Stroke In Patients With Atrial Fibrillation, Alessandra Lof, Stephanie Pillai

Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019

Objective: To evaluate the overall efficacy, advantages, and disadvantages of treatment with direct factor Xa inhibitors as compared to warfarin in the prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. Methods: A quantitative meta-analysis was performed on three separate studies, each of which evaluated the efficacy and safety outcomes of a direct factor Xa inhibitor versus warfarin in preventing stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. The direct factor Xa inhibitors that were evaluated included apixaban, edoxaban, and rivaroxaban. Results: The direct factor Xa inhibitors were found to be as effective, and in some cases more effective, than …

A Very Rare Cause Of Pancytopenia., Talal Alzahrani, Dana Kay, Kelly Zhang, Linda Lesky

GW Research Days 2015

INTRODUCTION:

Levetiracetam (Keppra) is a pyrrolidone derivative and acts as an anti-epileptic medication by modulating neurotransmitter release. Pancytopenia is a very rare adverse effect caused by levetiracetam. There are fewer than four case reports in the medical literature discussing the association between levetiracetam and pancytopenia. The pathogenesis behind this relationship is unclear. Therefore, this case will serve to spread awareness of a rare cause of pancytopenia and to hypothesize how this medication causes pancytopenia.

CASE REPORT:

A brain MRI of a 79-year-old female with a medical history of hypertension, Type II diabetes, and CVA revealed a right temporoparietal mass. She …
