Brief Review: Regional Anesthesia For Vaso-Occlusive Pain Crises, Oluwatomi Alade
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Vaso-occlusive pain crisis occurs with obstruction of blood vessels from sickled red blood cells. This results in ischemic injury causing in pain. Acute vasoocclusive pain crisis is one of the most common reasons for patients with sickle cell disease to present to the hospital for medical attention. Acute treatment involves IV opioid therapy, non-opioid therapy, and IV hydration. There is a known lack of trust between a patient in acute pain and a provider in the emergency department (ED) and hospital secondary to stereotypes regarding pain seeking behavior. Here we discuss a case of vasoocclusive pain crisis refractory to opioid …

We report a case of a 54-year-old female who presented with mild shortness of breath, lower chest discomfort, fatigue, and weakness ongoing for several days and was diagnosed with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). TTP is characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia due to either an inherited or immune-mediated reduction in von Willebrand Factor (VWF) cleaving protease ADAMTS13.
Patients presenting with non-specific symptoms is becoming increasingly common and initial bias could be to attribute symptoms to viral syndrome or upper respiratory tract infection. However, the differential for non-specific complaints is extensive and thorough review of labs and re-evaluations of patients …

Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Cold Agglutinin disease (CAD) also known as Cold Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA) is a form of autoimmune hemolytic anemia wherein cold agglutinins (IgM autoantibodies against red blood cell (RBC) antigens) bind during cold temperatures causing clinical symptoms related to RBC agglutination resulting to hemolytic anemia. Clinicians should recognize that Cold Agglutinin disease can be secondary to an underlying pathology such as COVID-19. Here we describe an unusual case of Cold Agglutinin Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia which was diagnosed in the Emergency Department with the presence of COVID-19 and with a hospital course complicated by acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and bilateral …

Introduction: Phlegmasia cerulea dolens (PCD) is an uncommon, potentially life-threatening complication of acute deep venous thromboses that requires a timely diagnosis. The name of the condition, the visual diagnostic criteria, and the preponderance of cases in the literature referencing findings exclusively in patients with lighter skin complexions means that PCD may not be on the differential diagnosis for the patient with more melanated skin who is experiencing this time-sensitive vascular emergency. Case Report: We describe one case of PCD in a patient with darker skin complexion and the importance of identifying clinical findings, regardless of skin color, given the paucity …

Abstract
Introduction
Health centers are community-based, patient directed primary care providers that offer accessible, high-quality primary care within medically underserved communities. Screening for cancer and managing complex chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and depression are vital services for the vulnerable populations seen by community health centers. Delivering care for complex chronic conditions and preventive services using virtual models that integrate self-care tools and technology is an important approach to increasing access for hard-to-reach patients served by health centers.
Objective
This study aimed to explore the use of a virtual care model, applied using a systems approach and patient-driven …

INTRODUCTION: Lemierre syndrome (LS) is a rare condition with a high mortality risk. It is well described in older children and young adults involving bacteremia, thrombophlebitis, and metastatic abscess commonly due to Fusobacterium infections. Young, pre-verbal children are also susceptible to LS; thus, careful attention must be given to their pattern of symptoms and history to identify this condition in the emergency department (ED).
CASE REPORT: A 12-month-old previously healthy boy with a recent diagnosis of acute otitis media and viral illness presented to the ED with a complaint of fever. Additional symptoms developed at the head and neck and …

Introduction
Biases in communication can be harmful to patient perceptions of care and the medical team's decision-making. Optimal communication must be taught and practiced similarly to the optimal management of the complex medical conditions associated with sickle cell disease (SCD). This simulation is designed to teach about biases, optimizing communication to and about a patient with SCD, and appropriately diagnosing and managing pediatric osteomyelitis as a complication of SCD.
Methods
We designed and implemented a simulation case targeting emergency medicine residents and fellows to raise awareness about biases associated with SCD care and the complication of osteomyelitis in children with …
