Relationship Between Estimated Average Glucose (Eag) And Fasting Plasma Glucose In A Cohort Of Pakistani Diabetic Subjects, Nanik Ram, Sibtain Ahmed, Saadia Sattar, Saira Furqan, Najmul Islam

Section of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism

Introduction: Scientific literature is scarce on the utility of estimated average glucose (eAG) from Pakistan. Hence, there is a dire need to evaluate the relationship between eAG and fasting plasma glucose (FPG), in order to enhance our understanding of eAG and its usefulness. This study aims to investigate the relationship between FPG and eAG in diabetic patients calculated using HbA1C.
Materials and methods: A retrospective study was conducted at the Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan. The medical records of both genders in the age range of 18-60 years, presenting as outpatients at the endocrine clinic, labeled as DM, were reviewed …

Background: This study aimed to measure the effect of diabetes education using the novel method of "diabetes conversation map (DCM)" as compared to routine counselling (RC) on diabetes management self-efficacy (DMSE) among patients living with type 2 diabetes in Karachi, Pakistan.
Methods: A parallel arm randomized controlled trial among patients with type 2 diabetes aged 30-60 years, with HbA1c > 7%, diagnosed for at least 5 yrs., was conducted at the national institute of diabetes and endocrinology in Karachi, Pakistan. A total 123 type 2 diabetes patients were randomized into DCM (n = 62) or RC (n = 61). Four weekly …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Chemerin is a novel protein linked to adipocyte differentiation and the development of metabolic imbalances. We sought to examine the relationship of chemerin with metabolic syndrome disturbances including body fat percentage, serum lipid, glucose, insulin levels and body fat percentage in lean and obese volunteers. A cross-sectional study of 90 randomly selected healthy males from Pakistan were divided into three groups as per Body Mass Index (BMI) criteria for South Asian Population. Anthropometric measurements were taken for BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference and body fat percentage, while serum analyses were performed for fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, fasting lipid profile …

Association Of Depression With Treatment Outcomes In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Cross-Sectional Study From Karachi, Pakistan, Saman I. Zuberi, Ehsan U. Syed, Junaid A. Bhatti

Section of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism

Background: To assess the associations of depression with glycemic control and compliance to self-care activities in adult Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary-care hospital in Karachi (Aga Khan University Hospital). Equal numbers of depressed and non-depressed Patients were consecutively recruited from the diabetic clinic. Information on demographic and clinical characteristics was collected in face-to-face interviews and from medical records. Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS) was used to measure depression. Associations of depressed status (HADS >= 8) with poor glycemic control (Hemoglobin A1c level >= 7%) and compliance to self-care activities were …

Self-Glucose Monitoring And Glycaemic Control At A Tertiary Care University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan, Khurshid Khowaja, Humaira Waheed

Section of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between Self Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG) levels and improved glycemic control (HbA1c level) among type 2 diabetic patients, receiving oral hypoglycaemic agents and insulin, and to ascertain the factors influencing SMBG.

METHOD: Using Comparative cross sectional study design five hundred Type 2 diabetes patients through convenient sampling between 30-70 years were interviewed through a structured questionnaire in year 2006 and 2007 at AKUH Ambulatory setting. These 500 subjects were divided as 250 in case (doing SMBG) and 250 in control (not doing SMBG) groups.

RESULTS: We identified that HbA1c value was maintained at good …
