Admission Creatine Kinase As A Prognostic Marker In Acute Myocardial Infarction, Khawar Abbas Kazmi, Saleem Perwaiz Iqbal, Ayla Bakr, Mohammad Perwaiz Iqbal

Section of Cardiology

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prognostic significance of creatine kinase (CK) in Pakistani patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and to find out if CK combined with troponin T (TnT) could be a better predictor for long-term adverse cardiac event.

METHODS: One hundred and eighty six consecutive patients with AMI who were eligible for streptokinase (SK) treatment were included in this prospective cohort study. The relationship between their serum/plasma CK and TnT levels at the time of admission and clinical outcome was investigated over a mean follow up of 24.12 +/- 3.75 months.

RESULTS: Admission CK was found to be …

Comparison Of Non Cardiac Chest Pain (Nccp) And Acute Coronary Syndrome (Acs) Patients Presenting To A Tertiary Care Center, Om Parkash, Aysha Almas, Aamir Hameed, Muhammad Islam Oct 2009

Comparison Of Non Cardiac Chest Pain (Nccp) And Acute Coronary Syndrome (Acs) Patients Presenting To A Tertiary Care Center, Om Parkash, Aysha Almas, Aamir Hameed, Muhammad Islam

Section of Cardiology

OBJECTIVE: To compare clinical characteristics of patients admitted with chest pain with those who had Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) and Non Cardiac Chest Pain (NCCP) presenting at a tertiary care center.METHODS: An analytical crossectional study was done. All patients presenting to the emergency with acute chest pain of age more than 18 years who had electrocardiography done and had an initial serum Troponin I (Trop I) measured were included. Patients were assigned to ACS groups or NCCP group after cardiac workup. Those who did not have cardiac workup were excluded from the study.RESULTS: We enrolled a total of 202 patients. …

Non-Invasive Prediction Of St Elevation Myocardial Infarction Complications By Left Ventricular Tei Index, Nasir Rahman, Khawar Abbas Kazmi, Muniza Yousaf Feb 2009

Non-Invasive Prediction Of St Elevation Myocardial Infarction Complications By Left Ventricular Tei Index, Nasir Rahman, Khawar Abbas Kazmi, Muniza Yousaf

Section of Cardiology

OBJECTIVE: To investigate association between the Tei index and cardiac complications of ST elevation of Myocardial Infarction.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of a 202 adult consecutive patients with first ST elevation MI (STEMI) were studied. Tei index was obtained as: (a _ b)/b, where "a" is the interval between the cessation and onset of mitral flow and "b" is the ejection time of aortic flow measured with the help of pulsed Doppler echocardiography. Subsequent complications, included Death, Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Cardiogenic shock, Atrial Flutter/ Atrial Fibrillation, Sustained ventricular tachycardia, Advanced Atrio- Ventricular Clock (AV Block), Myocardial Infarction (MI), …

Secondary Prevention Of Heart Disease - Knowledge Among Cardiologists And Omega-3 (Omega-3) Fatty Acid Prescribing Behaviors In Karachi, Pakistan, Saqib A. Gowani, Sana Shoukat, Ather M. Taqui, Hashim M. Hanif, Wasiq F. Rawasia, Zeeshan Qadri, Sajid H. Dhakam

Section of Cardiology

Background: The use of omega-3 fatty acids is a currently proven strategy for secondary prevention of heart disease. The prescription practices for this important nutraceutical is not currently known. It is imperative to assess the knowledge of cardiologists regarding the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids and to determine the frequency of its prescription. The aim of the study was to determine the practices and associations of dietary fish prescribing among cardiologists of Karachi and to assess their knowledge of fish oil supplementation and attitudes toward dietary practices. Methods: A cross sectional survey was conducted during the period of January to …
