Background: Computed tomography (CT) plays a significant role in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and has helped to identify patients with serious complications. We investigated the clinical characteristics and chest CT findings of COVID-19 positive patients complicated with acute pulmonary embolism (APE). Venous thromboembolism (VTE) includes deep vein thrombosis and its complications and pulmonary embolism. Cancer, surgery, prolonged immobilization, fractures, paralysis, use of oral contraceptives, and hereditary coagulopathies are classic risk factors for VTE. An increased incidence of VTE has been reported in patients with Klinefelter syndrome (KS), with a reported prevalence of 0.1e0.2% in the general population and up to 3.1% in infertile men. Background: We performed a retrospective analysis to evaluate the efficacy of VA-ECMO support in cardiogenic shock based on various etiologies.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 99 patients supported with VA-ECMO from January 1, 2012 to January 1, 2015. Outcomes included survival to discontinuation of VA-ECMO support and survival to hospital discharge. The etiologies of cardiogenic shock included cardiac arrest (CPR), acute myocardial infarction (AMI), decompensated congestive heart failure (CHF), pulmonary embolism (PE), right ventricular failure (RVF) not secondary to an acute pulmonary embolism, and post-cardiotomy syndrome (PCS). Novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are becoming popular management options for stroke prophylaxis in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation as well as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism treatment and prophylaxis. NOACs have similar efficacy to warfarin along with noninferior safety profiles. Patient comorbidities, size, renal and hepatic function, and concomitant drug regimen play a role in which NOAC a physician may choose.
