Background Child Abuse Pediatricians (CAPs) are accused of misdiagnosing a yet-to-be-identified mimic as abusive head trauma (AHT), particularly in ill children with an isolated subdural hemorrhage (SDH). Though not diagnostic criteria, specific social stressors are identified as AHT risk factors. The existence of a mimic can be assessed by comparing the prevalence of AHT risk factors across study groups (See Table 1). Background: Antibiotic duration is one of the pillars of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) as it helps to limit unnecessary antibiotic exposure while continuing to provide appropriate care for infections. In our emergency department (ED), clinicians are using first-line guideline-recommended antibiotics as an appropriate choice for most patients (per our ASP report tracking), however, duration continues to be prolonged especially for community acquired pneumonia (CAP) and acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS). National guidelines recommend shortening antibiotic durations to 3-5 days for CAP and 5-7 days for ABRS, however currently only 22% of patients discharged from our ED receive the recommended duration. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and nonmotor symptoms. Its pathological hallmarks include the accumulation of misfolded alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) in Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. Phosphorylation of α-Syn is a prominent feature of these inclusions, but its role in disease pathogenesis remains unclear. To identify the role of α-Syn phosphorylation in synucleinopathy, we generated two Snca knock-in (KI) mouse models carrying phosphomimetic mutations at SncaY39 or SncaS129 (Snca^Y39E or Snca^S129D) which manipulated epitopes phosphorylated in the PD brain. Introduction: Pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) affects 1 in 37 young children and is associated with heightened stress and anxiety among caregivers. Currently, there are no established interventions that target PFD caregiver stress, and traditional models of adult mental healthcare face feasibility issues in pediatric care settings. To address this gap, we developed a brief acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) intervention (Clinical Trials #NCT06001398). We assessed caregiver-perceived acceptability to inform future efficacy testing. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: An array of treatment-related toxicities result from androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa), compromising function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Exercise has been demonstrated to counter a number of these adverse effects including decreased HRQoL; however, when exercise should be initiated is less clear. This study aims to examine whether commencing exercise when ADT is initiated rather than later during treatment is more effective in countering adverse effects on HRQoL. The prevalence of autoimmune diabetes was assessed in 113 indigenous and 1555 non-indigenous participants in the Fremantle Diabetes Study Phase II. Both type 1 diabetes (3.5% vs. 8.2%) and latent autoimmune diabetes of adults diagnosed based on glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody (GADA) positivity (1.0% vs. 5.7%) were lower in Aboriginal participants (P = 0.101 and 0.039 respectively). Six Aboriginals with GADA-negative type 2 diabetes were positive for tyrosine phosphatase-related islet antigen 2 antibodies but did not exhibit relative insulin deficiency.

Context: Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is a major cause of congenital hypopituitarism and is known to be associated with overweight and obesity in up to 44% of children. Given the role of the hypothalamus in hormonal regulation, we sought to assess the association of resting energy expenditure (REE), appetite and physical activity with SOD. Objective: To characterize REE and other metabolic features in patients with SOD and evaluate relationships with elevated body mass index (BMI). INTRODUCTION: During a cerebrovascular procedure, diligent care is made to ensure no air is present in lines and connectors. Should air enter the cerebral vasculature, cerebral air emboli can cause worsening neurological outcome or death. This communication outlines how a process change of refrigerating mixed heparin for storage lead to the presence of unintentional air, or off-gassing of the fluid.

Suicide prevention is a top priority for the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and suicide is often associated with adverse social factors (e.g., financial, legal, and housing problems). The VA provides social services integrated with healthcare services, which may increase the opportunities to detect and document suicide attempt in EHR records. Using VA administrative data, we examined three cohorts of all patients from 2014 to 2018 who had housing instability (n = 659,987), justice involvement (n = 200,487), and unemployment (n = 346,556). BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a relatively common inherited disorder that may be asymptomatic. It is a common cause of sudden cardiac death and can lead to catastrophic cardiovascular collapse in the operating room if previously undiagnosed. This case report discusses the implications of unsuspected hypertrophic cardiomyopathy for anesthesia management.

CASE PRESENTATION: A veteran aged 55 years presented to the preadmission testing clinic prior to undergoing outpatient surveillance colonoscopy under anesthesia. His initial medical history was unremarkable. On physical examination, a murmur with benign characteristics was detected. Nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF) employs nanosecond-duration, high voltage pulses to induce oxidative stress, leading to temporary or permanent damage to cells or tissue (also known as reversible and irreversible electroporation), and has been considered a promising approach for cancer therapy. In parallel to this, nanosecond pulsed atmospheric pressure plasma jets (ns-APPJs) have also shown to be effective in inactivating cancer cells or increasing sensitivity of cells to electric fields. ns-APPJs are known to generate reactive chemical agents, including reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) which induces oxidative stress resulting in cell proliferation, apoptosis, and necrosis.
