OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an association exists between fear of pain and recovery time from sports-related concussion in a pediatric population.

DESIGN: Prospective observational study.

SETTING: Primary outpatient sports medicine clinic of a large pediatric hospital.

PATIENTS: One hundred twenty-eight pediatric patients aged 8 to 18 years who presented to clinic with a primary diagnosis of concussion from September 2018 to March 2020. Inclusion criteria included presentation within 2 weeks of injury and symptomatic on initial visit. Patients who sustained a concussion because of motor vehicle collisions or assault were excluded.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether youth with white coat hypertension on initial ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) continue to demonstrate the same pattern on repeat ABPM.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective longitudinal cohort study of patients referred for high blood pressure (BP) and diagnosed with white coat hypertension by ABPM who had follow-up ABPM 0.5-4.6 years later at 11 centers in the Pediatric Nephrology Research Consortium. We classified ABPM phenotype using the American Heart Association guidelines. In this retrospective, multicenter study of 261 eyes (259 patients), patients who underwent rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) post-lockdown period experienced an additional 22-day delay, leading to significantly more epiretinal membrane and proliferative vitreoretinopathy and lower single-surgery anatomic success rates. During lockdown, perfluoropropane gas was used more commonly, and pneumatic retinopexy was used more commonly in COVID-19-positive patients.

INTRODUCTION: Gastric cancer (GC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Surgical resection is the gold standard of treatment. In the United States, race and socioeconomic status are associated with the diagnosis of GC; however, no studies have examined these as independent risk factors for surgical outcomes. Our study sought to investigate socioeconomic factors and GC surgical outcomes using a national cancer registry.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the detection accuracy of the Cobas human papillomavirus (HPV) assay for high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) and HPV-16 in head and neck fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimens with squamous cell carcinoma.

METHODS: Head and neck FNA biopsy specimens from 2012 to 2020 were retrospectively collected. Cobas HPV testing was performed on 90 FNA specimens with valid Cervista HPV testing results. OBJECTIVES: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pose a significant health burden in adolescents. Many adolescents receiving care in the emergency department (ED) are in need of testing, regardless of their chief complaint. Our objective was to determine whether an electronic, risk-based STI screening program in our ED was associated with an increase in STI testing among at-risk adolescents.

Progress with intensive chemotherapy and supportive care measures has improved survival in newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Predicting outcome helps in treatment decision making. We analyzed survival as the treatment endpoint in 3728 patients with newly diagnosed AML treated with intensive chemotherapy from 1980 to 2021. We divided the total study group (3:1 basis) into a training (n = 2790) and a validation group (n = 938). The associations between survival and 27 characteristics were investigated. PURPOSE: Metaplastic breast cancer (MpBC) is a rare subtype of breast cancer that is commonly triple-negative and poorly responsive to neoadjuvant therapy in retrospective studies.

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: To better define clinical outcomes and correlates of response, we analyzed the rate of pathologic complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant therapy, survival outcomes, and genomic and transcriptomic profiles of the pretreatment tumors in a prospective clinical trial (NCT02276443). A total of 211 patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), including 39 with MpBC, received doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide-based neoadjuvant therapy.

Objective: Target artery (TA) instability has been the most frequent indication for secondary intervention after fenestrated and branched endovascular aortic repair (FB-EVAR) of pararenal and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs). Objective: To assess the impact of frailty in patients with ovarian cancer on surgical procedures and outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective review of patients with stage II-IV ovarian cancer from April 2013 to September 2017 was performed. Patients were triaged by laparoscopy to determine primary resectability. The adjusted modified frailty index score (amFI) was calculated and amFI ≥2 classified as high frailty. Clinical outcomes, progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated.

Standard of care (SOC) chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies such as axicabtagene ciloleucel (axi-cel) and tisagenlecleucel (tisa-cel) are associated with multisystem toxicities. There is limited information available about cardiovascular (CV) events associated with SOC axi-cel or tisa-cel. Palbociclib has been evaluated in early phase trials for well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLPS) and dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS) patients, with reported median progression-free survival (PFS) of 18 weeks. Here, we report on real-world use and surgical outcomes associated with palbociclib treatment. We retrospectively reviewed 61 consecutive patients with retroperitoneal WDLPS (n = 14) or DDLPS (n = 47) treated with palbociclib monotherapy between 1 March 2016 and 28 February 2021 at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Limited data exist regarding the outcome of patients with follicular lymphoma (FL) who relapse or progress after frontline lenalidomide and rituximab (R2). BACKGROUND & AIMS: Laboratory studies have demonstrated that antibiotic use in conjunction with bowel purgatives causes alterations to the gut microbiota. Because gut microbiota changes may be a trigger for the development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), we sought to assess whether individuals who undergo bowel cleansing for colonoscopy and have concurrent antibiotic exposure develop IBS at higher rates than individuals who undergo colonoscopy without antibiotic exposure.

Background: Risk of anal squamous cell carcinoma (anal cancer) is greater among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We describe the frequency of and factors associated with abnormal anal cytology results in Colombian MSM living with HIV.

Methods: This retrospective observational cohort study included MSM ≥18 years old living with HIV screened with anal cytology at Hospital Universitario San Ignacio in Bogotá, Colombia between January 2019 and February 2020. Purpose: Tumor and target volume manual delineation remains a challenging task in head and neck cancer radiation therapy. The purpose of this study was to conduct a multi-institutional evaluation of manual delineations of gross tumor volume (GTV), high-risk clinical target volume (CTV), parotids, and submandibular glands on treatment simulation magnetic resonance scans of patients with oropharyngeal cancer.

Objective: The study objective was to explore differences in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) diagnosis experiences between men and women by examining the coding of health events over the 2 years preceding AS diagnosis.

Methods: Claims data (January 2006-April 2019) from the MarketScan databases were examined. Patients who had received two or more AS diagnoses at least 30 days apart and had at least 2 years of insurance enrollment before their first AS diagnosis were analyzed. Objectives: To analyze charges, complications, survival, and functional outcomes for definitive surgery of mandibular osteoradionecrosis (ORN).

Materials and methods: Retrospective analysis of 76 patients who underwent segmental mandibulectomy with reconstruction from 2000 to 2009.

Results: Complications occurred in 49 (65%) patients and were associated with preoperative drainage (odds ratio [OR] 4.40, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-19.27). The adjusted median charge was $343 000, and higher charges were associated with double flap reconstruction (OR 8.15, 95% CI 2.19-30.29) and smoking (OR 5.91, 95% CI 1.69-20.72). Improved swallow was associated with age <67 years (OR 3.76, 95% CI 1.16-12.17) and preoperative swallow (OR 3.42, 95% CI 1.23-9.51). Five-year ORN-recurrence-free survival was 93% while overall survival was 63% and associated with pulmonary disease (HR [hazard ratio] 3.57, 95% CI 1.43-8.94).

The beneficial effect of statins on the anti-lymphoma activity of the rituximab-based chemotherapy regimen is controversial. Here, we retrospectively reviewed patients with naïve-treated advanced diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) receiving frontline R-CHOP, and for whom data regarding differential statins use was available at the time of initiation of treatment. We observe that patients treated with statins and R-CHOP experienced a significantly higher CR rate as compared to those who received R-CHOP only.
