Leishmaniasis, a vector-borne neglected tropical disease, affects over 6.2 million people globally. Case acquisition is increasingly recognized in the United States, and in Texas, most reported cases are locally acquired and speciated to Leishmania mexicana. We conducted a scoping literature review to systematically assess contemporary research on Leishmania in humans, animals, reservoir hosts, or vectors in Texas after 2000. Out of 22 eligible studies, the most prevalent themes were case reports, followed by studies on domestic animals, reservoirs, and vectors, with several studies bridging multiple disciplines. Climate change, urbanization, and habitat encroachment appear to be driving the northward expansion …

Approximately 3% of organ transplant recipients will be diagnosed with an invasive fungal infection (IFI), with 10%-47% being fatal. The source of IFI is typically not known, but Candida spp. cause the majority of IFI cases. We obtained intestines from two types of organ donors, brain-dead (BD) (n = 7) and donation after circulatory death (DCD) (n = 5), to sample microbes from the mucosal surface and the lumen. BD donors were parenterally fed and treated with corticosteroids in the days before procurement, whereas DCD donors were enterally fed and not given corticosteroids. We found fungi present in …

The development of non-hormonal male contraceptives requires validated preclinical models. This study investigated whether human orthologs of two mouse testis-specific serine proteases, PRSS55 and TMPRSS12, both essential for male fertility in mice, could functionally rescue the infertility phenotypes of their respective knockout mouse lines. We generated transgenic mouse lines expressing human PRSS55 with either an extracellularly or intracellularly positioned C-terminal 3xFLAG tag (RES GPI or RES TM), and a line expressing human TMPRSS12 with a C-terminal 3xFLAG tag (T12 RES), all on their respective mouse null backgrounds. Fertility was assessed through continuous mating trials, and sperm parameters were evaluated. Both …

Context: As the rate of research production accelerates, the ability to efficiently and unambiguously communicate judgments relating to the synthesis, evaluation, and use of scientific information becomes paramount.

Perspective: Scientific information can be viewed as a "layered infrastructure" of data, evidence, knowledge, and use. The GRADE approach serves as a de facto data standard for this infrastructure, supporting movement between layers by reducing ambiguity in claims to knowledge (in the form of judgements of certainty in the evidence when answering research questions) and level of commitment to possible solutions to problems (in the form of strength of recommendations for interventions). …

Evaluating Coplanar And Noncoplanar Treatment Plans For The Varian Halcyon And Varian Truebeam For Intact Prostate Patients., Ashley Coppage

Masters Projects

Prostate cancer is among the most treated malignancies with radiation therapy, where precise dose delivery is critical for tumor control and minimizing toxicity. VMAT is widely adopted due to its efficiency and conformity; however, the choice between coplanar and non-coplanar beam arrangements remains an area of ongoing investigation, especially with newer platforms like Halcyon and TrueBeam. This retrospective dosimetric study compares coplanar and non-coplanar volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) treatment plans for intact prostate cancer patients using the Varian Halcyon and Varian TrueBeam systems. Plans were created using a standardized protocol within Eclipse v16.1, with all Halcyon plans employing coplanar …

Pandemic lockdown orders resulted in closures to critical community networks. One such infrastructure was community recreation centers/parks. This infrastructure serves a critical role in building psychosocial wellness for youth. Socioeconomic minority youth face baseline disparity in center/park distribution and services. Youth recreation activity declined 50% as result of lockdown orders with corresponding decline in youth mental health status. Despite overall youth activity decline, White and high socioeconomic demographic categories were associated with greatest recreation access during the pandemic. Thus, the pandemic exacerbated preexisting disparities in recreation access for minority youth and its benefit towards adaptive development. Minority youth experienced greater …

Evaluating Parotid Gland Dose Between Electronic Tissue Compensation And Field In Field Treatment Techniques For Parotid Sparing In Whole-Brain Radiotherapy, Joesph E. Bodgonas

Masters Projects

Purpose:

The parotid glands are essential to salivary function and patient quality of life, yet they are not routinely prioritized as organs at risk (OARs) during whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT). With growing recognition of long-term side effects like xerostomia in patients with prolonged survival after WBRT, parotid-sparing techniques warrant investigation. This study compares radiation dose to the parotid glands using three different 3D conformal WBRT planning approaches: field-in-field (FiF) with blocking, electronic tissue compensation (eCOMP) without blocking, and eCOMP with blocking.

Methods and Materials:

A retrospective study was conducted on 20 patients previously treated with 3D conformal WBRT. Original eCOMP plans …

A Comparative Study Of Vmat Beam Arrangements In Large Field Nodal Prostate Treatment Plans, Laura R. Black Aug 2025

A Comparative Study Of Vmat Beam Arrangements In Large Field Nodal Prostate Treatment Plans, Laura R. Black

Masters Projects

Treatment of extensive prostate and pelvic lymph node volumes for prostate cancer patients provide unique challenges related to limitations in multileaf collimator (MLC) design in many modern linear accelerators. A strategy to overcome this challenge is by restricting the field size, improving modulation as well as using overlapping arcs to ensure complete coverage of the target. Using too few arcs can result in suboptimal target coverage, while too many arcs can lead to prolonged time on the table, increasing the risk of patient movement and potential side effects that may compromise treatment accuracy. This study aims to evaluate the optimal …

The complementarity and clinical utility of combining liquid biopsies and radiomic image analysis has not been demonstrated. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) minimal residual disease after chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is highly prognostic, but on-treatment biomarkers are needed to enable response-adapted therapies. Here, we analyzed 418 patients with NSCLC undergoing CRT to develop and validate a novel dynamic risk model that accurately predicts ultimate progression-free survival during treatment. We optimize tissue-free variant calling from plasma samples to facilitate ctDNA monitoring and demonstrate the importance of accounting for persistent clonal hematopoiesis variants. We show that mid-CRT ctDNA concentration …

Car-Macrophage Cell Therapy: A New Era Of Hope For Pancreatic Cancer, Daoyan Wei, Liang Wang, Yi Liu, Xiangsheng Zuo, Xiling Shen, Robert S Bresalier

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the deadliest malignancies, characterized by late diagnosis, early metastasis, and resistance to conventional therapies. A major barrier to effective treatment is its desmoplastic and immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), which restricts T cell infiltration and dampens responses to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). These features highlight the urgent need for innovative immunotherapeutic strategies capable of overcoming PDAC's immunologic and physical barriers. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-macrophage (CAR-M) therapy has emerged as a promising approach to address these challenges. Unlike CAR-T or CAR-NK cells, CAR-Ms can efficiently infiltrate tumors, remodel the TME, phagocytose tumor cells, and stimulate …

In a phase II trial, patients with local-regionally advanced human papillomavirus-positive oropharyngeal carcinoma (n = 35) received ipilimumab (anti-CTLA4) and nivolumab (anti-PD-1) as induction immunotherapy and concurrently with radiotherapy (NCT03799445). Coprimary endpoints included 6-month complete metabolic response rate (94%) and 2-year progression-free survival (84%). Induction yielded a 46% major histopathologic response rate. Single-cell profiling revealed responders had higher baseline intratumoral CD8+ T cells with a tumor-reactive, tissue-resident memory (TRM) phenotype and a treatment-related decrease in effector regulatory T (eTreg) cells. The eTreg decrease correlated with CD8+ T-cell clonotype transitioning from TRM to effector memory and IFNG+ effector cells. …

Partial cystectomy is a surgical bladder-sparing option for selected patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), urachal adenocarcinoma and diverticular bladder tumors. Partial cystectomy hold several advantages. It allows for definite pathology and accurate staging while avoiding side effects from radiation therapy and preserves the option for salvage radical therapy (radical cystectomy or radical radiotherapy). Patients should have a CT urogram, prostatic urethral biopsy and mapping biopsies or blue light cystoscopy to rule out multifocal disease or CIS. Small solitary MIBC patients without carcinoma in situ in an area of the bladder where resection can be performed with negative margin would …

Impact Of Aspiration Thrombectomy On Microvascular Obstruction In Patients With St-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction, Mahmoud Ismaiel, Mohamed Shehata, Tamer Elwasify, Mohamed Hosny, Amir Anwar, Tarek A.N. Ahmed, Abdalla Elagha

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Background and objective:

Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) is the gold standard for myocardial reperfusion in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Numerous studies have shown that thrombus aspiration can prevent distal embolization and reducing the risk of microvascular obstruction (MVO). Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is considered the gold standard for the evaluation of MVO. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of thrombus aspiration in STEMI patients as an adjunctive technique to primary PCI in reducing the incidence and extent of MVO evaluated by CMR.

Methods

Ninety-three patients with heavy thrombus burden were enrolled in this study; …

Establishment Of Neonatal Sepsis Predictors Utilizing Non-Invasive Monitoring Techniques, Dalton Janssen Aug 2025

Establishment Of Neonatal Sepsis Predictors Utilizing Non-Invasive Monitoring Techniques, Dalton Janssen

Dissertations

Neonatal sepsis remains one of the leading causes of global neonatal mortality. Reactionary approaches for diagnosis and treatment have dominated the tactics in addressing neonatal sepsis but clinical intuition is an untapped resource that could lead to earlier prediction of sepsis onset. Nurses and other staff with specialized training and experience who have served as routine caregivers for a specific patient are able to identify when the patient’s status is altered. This clinical intuition may be substantiated by referencing specific patient trends in non-invasive measures over time. This retrospective, exploratory study examined whether variation in non-invasive monitoring variables could serve …

Research suggests that a high intelligence quotient (IQ) may contribute to the underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. High IQ may allow children to compensate for executive functioning-related deficits inherent in ADHD and/or may influence behaviors such as high activity level or not following rules that mimic ADHD symptoms. To gain a better understanding of the relationship between IQ and ADHD, the present study aimed to investigate how high IQ impacts symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity as well as outcomes related to academic performance, emotional regulation, and peer relationships in children. The study utilized archival data from …
