BACKGROUND: Working dogs exposed to narcotics might require reversal in the field.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects of naloxone administered intramuscularly (IM) or intranasally (IN) to reverse fentanyl sedation in working dogs.

ANIMALS: Ten healthy, working dogs aged 1.7 ± 1 year and weighing 26 ± 3 kg.

METHODS: In this randomized, controlled cross-over study dogs received either 4 mg of naloxone IN or IM 10 minutes after fentanyl (0.3 mg IV) administration. Sedation was assessed at baseline and 5 minutes after fentanyl administration, then at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 60 and 120 minutes after …

OBJECTIVE: Our objectives were to describe time intervals of EMS encounters for suspected stroke patients in North Carolina (NC) and evaluate differences in EMS time intervals by community socioeconomic status (SES) and rurality.

METHODS: This cross-sectional study used statewide data on EMS encounters of suspected stroke in NC in 2019. Eligible patients were adults requiring EMS transport to a hospital following a 9-1-1 call for stroke-like symptoms. Incident street addresses were geocoded to census tracts and linked to American Community Survey SES data and to rural-urban commuting area (RUCA) codes. BACKGROUND: This retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from the PROPPR study describes volatile anesthetic use in severely injured trauma patients undergoing anesthesia.

METHODS: After exclusions, 402 subjects were reviewed of the original 680, and 292 had complete data available for analysis. Anesthesia was not protocolized, so analysis was of contemporary practice.

RESULTS: The small group who received no volatile anesthetic (n = 25) had greater injury burden (Glasgow Coma Scale

OBJECTIVE: With the rise of medical and recreational cannabis use among older adults, concerns about the potential risks and benefits of cannabis use are increasing. This pilot study aimed to determine the attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions of older adults toward cannabis as a medicinal product, to establish a foundation for future research on how healthcare providers communicate with this population regarding cannabis.

Mammographic screening has played a pivotal role in reducing mortality rates associated with breast cancer. Despite an overall decline of breast cancer death rates of 43% from 1989 through 2020, breast cancer remains a predominant form of invasive cancer among women. Conventional X-ray imaging used in mammography can yield limited contrast when it comes to substances with similar X-ray attenuation, such as that between benign and cancerous tissue. Mesh-based X-ray phase imaging allows for higher contrast and resolution in similar-density materials. ปัจจุบันโรคไขมันพอกตับชนิดที่ไม่ได้เกิดจากแอลกอฮอล์ไม่มียามาตรฐานในประเทศไทยที่ใช้ในการรักษา จึงมักแนะนำให้ปรับเปลี่ยนพฤติกรรม โดยเน้นไปที่การออกกำลังกาย และการควบคุมการรับประทานอาหาร การศึกษาครั้งนี้มี วัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเปรียบเทียบผลของการฝึกแอโรบิกแบบหนักสลับเบา (HIIT) ต่อการลดลงของไขมันและพังผืดใน ตับในผู้ที่มีภาวะน้ำหนักตัวเกินและภาวะอ้วนร่วมกับโรคไขมันพอกตับชนิดที่ไม่ได้เกิดจากแอลกอฮอล์ เป็นระยะเวลา 3 เดือน ในอาสาสมัครเพศชายและเพศหญิง จำนวน 29 คน อายุ 18-60 ปี มีดัชนีมวลกาย 23-34.9 กิโลกรัมต่อเมตร2 แบ่งเป็นกลุ่มทดลอง 15 คน (อายุเฉลี่ย 37.87 ± 7.58 ปี) และกลุ่มควบคุม 14 คน (อายุเฉลี่ย 42.29 ± 9.36 ปี) ทั้ง 2 กลุ่มมีข้อมูลพื้นฐานไม่แตกต่าง โดยกลุ่มทดลองฝึกออกกำลังกายแบบ HIIT ด้วยการปั่นจักรยาน 3 วันต่อสัปดาห์ และทั้ง 2 กลุ่มมีการคุมอาหารเหมือนกัน โดยมีนักกำหนดอาหารคอยควบคุม ผลการศึกษาพบว่า อาสาสมัครทั้ง 2 กลุ่มสามารถลดไขมันพอกตับได้ (HIIT; -23.67 ± 31.51 dB/m (p = 0.01) vs. Control; -20.21 ± 32.91 dB/m (p = 0.04)) แต่ไม่พบความแตกต่างระหว่างกลุ่ม (p = 0.66) และไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงของพังผืดตับในแต่ละกลุ่มและระหว่างกลุ่ม ( all p>0.05) มีเพียงกลุ่มทดลองที่สามารถลดมวลไขมัน (–0.74 ± 1.22 kg, p = 0.03) เปอร์เซ็นไขมัน (-0.69 ± 1.10 %, p = 0.03) visceral fat area (–4.41 …

BACKGROUND: Long term outcomes of lung transplantation are impacted by the occurrence of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD). Recent evidence suggests a role for the lung microbiome in the occurrence of CLAD, but the exact mechanisms are not well defined. We hypothesize that the lung microbiome inhibits epithelial autophagic clearance of pro-fibrotic proteins in an IL-33 dependent manner, thereby augmenting fibrogenesis and risk for CLAD.

IMPORTANCE: Pregnancy induces unique physiologic changes to the immune response and hormonal changes leading to plausible differences in the risk of developing post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC), or Long COVID. Exposure to SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy may also have long-term ramifications for exposed offspring, and it is critical to evaluate the health outcomes of exposed children. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Multi-site Observational Study of PASC aims to evaluate the long-term sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection in various populations. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, wastewater surveillance has emerged as a powerful tool used by public health authorities to track SARS-CoV-2 infections in communities. In May 2020, the Houston Health Department began working with a coalition of municipal and academic partners to develop a wastewater monitoring and reporting system for the city of Houston, Texas. Data collected from the system are integrated with other COVID-19 surveillance data and communicated through different channels to local authorities and the general public. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to systematically chart and summarize the literature pertaining to workplace health promotion (WHP) interventions targeting the five main modifiable lifestyle risk factors for chronic disease, including smoking, nutrition, alcohol, physical activity, overweight/obesity (SNAPO) in Australian workers.

METHODS: A scoping review was performed using the framework of Arksey and O'Malley. MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and SCOPUS were searched to identify peer-reviewed publications that evaluated primary or secondary WHP interventions which targeted one or more modifiable risk factor (SNAPO).

This Article explores the interaction between addiction and liberty and identifies a firm legal basis for recognition of a fundamental constitutional right to freedom from addiction. Government interferes with freedom from addiction when it causes addiction or restricts addiction treatment, and government may protect freedom from addiction through legislation empowering individuals against private actors’ efforts to addict them without their consent. This Article motivates and tests the boundaries of this right through case studies of emergent threats to liberty made possible or exacerbated by new technologies and scientific understandings. The adverse effects of cancer treatment on health-related quality of life (HRQL) are the primary concern of elderly women diagnosed with breast cancer. The interplay of transient and progressive functional impairments caused by cancer therapies, alongside the accelerated physical declines associated with the normal aging process, are all negatively correlated to HRQL. This study compared the HRQL trajectories between cases and controls for ten years after diagnosis.
