Necrotizing Enterocolitis In Premature Infants-A Defect In The Brakes? Evidence From Clinical And Animal Studies., Venkatesh Sampath, Maribel Martinez, Michael Caplan, Mark A. Underwood, Alain Cuna

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

A key aspect of postnatal intestinal adaptation is the establishment of symbiotic relationships with co-evolved gut microbiota. Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most severe disease arising from failure in postnatal gut adaptation in premature infants. Although pathological activation of intestinal Toll-like receptors (TLRs) is believed to underpin NEC pathogenesis, the mechanisms are incompletely understood. We postulate that unregulated aberrant TLR activation in NEC arises from a failure in intestinal-specific mechanisms that tamponade TLR signaling (the brakes). In this review, we discussed the human and animal studies that elucidate the developmental mechanisms inhibiting TLR signaling in the postnatal intestine (establishing the …

The energy demand of breast cancers is in part met through the β-oxidation of exogenous fatty acids. Fatty acids may also be used to aid in cell signaling and toward the construction of new membranes for rapidly proliferating tumor cells. A significant quantity of fatty acids comes from the hydrolysis of lipoprotein triacylglycerols and phospholipids by lipoprotein lipase (LPL). The lipid obtained via LPL in the breast tumor microenvironment may thus promote breast tumor growth and development. In this hypothesis article, we introduce LPL, provide a meta-analysis of RNAseq data showing that LPL is associated with poor prognosis, and explain …

Despite therapeutic advancements, the prognosis of locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LANSCLC), which has invaded multiple lobes or the other lung and intrapulmonary lymph nodes, remains poor. The emergence of immunotherapy with immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) is transforming cancer treatment. However, only a fraction of lung cancer patients benefit from ICB. Significant clinical evidence suggests that the proinflammatory tumor microenvironment (TME) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression correlate positively with response to the PD-1/PD-L1 blockade. We report here a liposomal nanoparticle loaded with cyclic dinucleotide and aerosolized (AeroNP-CDN) for inhalation delivery to deep-seated lung tumors and target CDN to …

Sensing Fear: Fast And Precise Threat Evaluation In Human Sensory Cortex, Wen Li, Andreas Keil

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Animal models of threat processing have evolved beyond the amygdala to incorporate a distributed neural network. In human research, evidence has intensified in recent years to challenge the canonical threat circuitry centered on the amygdala, urging revision of threat conceptualization. A strong surge of research into threat processing in the sensory cortex in the past decade has generated particularly useful insights to inform the reconceptualization. Here, synthesizing findings from both animal and human research, we highlight sensitive, specific, and adaptable threat representations in the sensory cortex, arising from experience-based sculpting of sensory coding networks. We thus propose that the human …
