Introduction

As the population ages, emergency physicians must be better equipped to manage the complex needs of older patients. While geriatric core competencies have been developed for medical students and emergency medicine (EM) residents, little work has been done to evaluate EM trainees’ comfort with these competencies, or their interest in and barriers to learning more about Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM).

Methods

Family health history (FHH) can serve as an entry point for preventive medicine by providing risk estimations for many common health conditions. College is a critical time for young adults to begin to understand the value of FHH collection, and to establish healthy behaviors to prevent FHH-related diseases. This study seeks to develop an integrated theoretical framework to examine FHH collection behavior and associated factors among college students. A sample of 2670 college students with an average age of 21.1 years completed a web-based survey. Less than half (49.8%) reported actively seeking FHH information from their family members. Defining The Role Of Oxidized Mitochondrial Dna In Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Grace Anne Ward

Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) are heterogeneous bone marrow (BM) failure malignancies characterized by constitutive innate immune activation, NLRP3 inflammasome (IFM) driven pyroptotic cell death, and the induction of interferon-stimulated genes (ISG). MDS often diagnostically resembles other hematologic disorders, as such, additional tools are needed for the discrimination from overlapping disorders. We observed that oxidized mitochondrial DNA (ox-mtDNA) is released upon cytolysis. We hypothesize that levels of ox-mtDNA are high in MDS, allowing us to use it as a diagnostic biomarker; and that cell free ox-mtDNA is contributing to feedforward BM failure.

Despite the success of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy for cancer, resistance and relapse are frequent. Combination therapies are expected to enhance response rates and overcome this resistance. Herein, we report that combining PRMT7 inhibition with ICI therapy induces a strong anti-tumor T cell immunity and restrains tumor growth in vivo by increasing immune cell infiltration. PRMT7-deficient B16.F10 melanoma exhibits increased expression of genes in the interferon pathway, antigen presentation, and chemokine signaling. PRMT7 deficiency or inhibition with SGC3027 in B16.F10 melanoma results in reduced DNMT expression, loss of DNA methylation in the regulatory regions of endogenous retroviral elements (ERVs) …

The prevalence and treatment of chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhea (GC) at school-based clinics (SBCs) requires revisiting. To assess whether clinic type influences CT/GC testing and treatment for minors (individuals 13–17 years of age), our study compared four SBCs with five family planning clinics (FPCs) in the Houston, Harris County metropolitan area of Texas, USA for: (1) the prevalence of CT/GC infection (pre-COVID-19 and during COVID-19); (2) treatment rates at the last positive diagnosis; and (3) the time, in days, from testing-to-diagnosis and testing-to-treatment. Between January 2019 and December 2020, 2439 unique patients (1579 at SBCs, 860 at FPCs) were seen. …

Neural stem cells, the source of newborn neurons in the adult hippocampus, are intimately involved in learning and memory, mood, and stress response. Despite considerable progress in understanding the biology of neural stem cells and neurogenesis, regulating the neural stem cell population precisely has remained elusive because we have lacked the specific targets to stimulate their proliferation and neurogenesis. The orphan nuclear receptor TLX/NR2E1 governs neural stem and progenitor cell self-renewal and proliferation, but the precise mechanism by which it accomplishes this is not well understood because its endogenous ligand is not known. BACKGROUND: Recent data have demonstrated that overall mortality and adverse events are not significantly different for primary repair (PR) and staged repair (SR) approaches to management of neonates with symptomatic tetralogy of Fallot (sTOF). Cost data can be used to compare the relative value (cost for similar outcomes) of these approaches and are a potentially more sensitive measure of morbidity.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to compare the economic costs associated with PR and SR in neonates with sTOF.

Pre-participation screening (PPS) in young competitive athletes aims to identify conditions associated with sudden cardiac death (SCD) in this population, with a view to appropriate management and potential mitigation of risk. A medical history questionnaire and physical examination are standard components of a PPS programme, whereas controversy still exists regarding mandatory utilisation of resting 12-lead electrocardiogram as a screening tool. Apart from a landmark study from Italy attributing the reduction of SCD rates in athletes to the implementation of a mandatory PPS programme, there remains no additional compelling evidence for similar outcomes to date. Though not recommended routinely in primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), thrombus aspiration can be the gamechanger in treatment for selected patient. We report a case in which ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) due to a huge intracoronary saddle embolus in distal left main (LM) was successfully treated with difficult intracoronary thrombectomy. We will discuss the potential strength of different thrombectomy devices which led to the clinical success.

Ablation of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) with multiple accessory pathways remains challenging to electrophysiologists. We presented a case of recurrent SVT despite 2 previous successful ablations of 3 different accessory pathways. This patient underwent the third ablation. We would like to discuss the electrophysiologic property of multiple accessory pathways and the cause of SVT recurrence in this patient.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial strain is a good prognostic factor independent of ejection fraction for outcomes in heart failure. We evaluated the prognostic role of global longitudinal strain in acute myocardial infarction to identify the likelihood of in-hospital heart failure. Background Infective endocarditis (IE) is associated with significant mortality and morbidity. This study aims to update the epidemiology of IE and to identify predictors of adverse outcome in the Chinese population in Hong Kong.

Methods This was a single-centre retrospective study of patients diagnosed with IE in Princess Margaret Hospital in Hong Kong during 2002-2016. Primary outcome was defined as in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes included 1-year mortality, valvular surgical intervention, heart failure, stroke and systemic embolization.

COVID-19 negatively impacted students' abilities to participate in live, in-person events; students were unable to interact with peers or build relationships critical to success and well-being. Quarantine, social distancing and video conferencing did not create this problem however, it simply amplified the fact that dental students seemingly lack camaraderie and a sense of belongingness. The Curriculum and Cultural Ambassador group was created to allow students to bond over shared goals in the hopes of improving their experiences within dental school. Peripheral MStim provided protection against chronic EtOH withdrawal symptoms and dependence-induced insensitivity of ventral tegmental area (VTA) GABA neurons to ethanol reintroduction. Behavioral indices of withdrawal were substantively ameliorated with concurrent MStim treatment. These findings suggest the need to explore the specific role of mechanoreceptor-based therapies in the treatment of substance abuse.

HIPAA Infringements Correlate Linearly with Number of Social Media Users.

Social media use has made information sharing much easier – including protected health information. Interestingly, as social media has become more popular over the years, HIPAA violations have also become more common.

The calculated R and P values suggest a strong correlation exists between social media use and HIPAA complaints.
